NEC to re-launch phones outside Japan, probably in Europe

NEC, the third-largest Japanese phone manufacturer, plans to re-launch its handsets outside Japan, as early as 2010.

The company sold phones in Europe and China until 2007, when losses made it re-think its strategy. Since then, NEC phones are only commercialized in Japan. However, since the demand in Japan fell 29% this year, NEC now wants to try its luck abroad once again.

It’s not clear yet in what markets NEC will start shipping phones, but, according to Reuters, a company spokesman said that Europe is a possibility.

The Japanese manufacturer plans to sell at least 1 million handsets overseas, for an average price of $300.

Google Voice Invites Go Out

picker-awesome

By Chris Scott Barr

You’ve probably heard me mention Google Voice once or twice, mostly because I love the service. Almost every phone call and text message I receive these days is to my Google Voice number. With a handy app for my iPhone, I even call out using it. Unfortunately the only downside to the service is that it’s a rather exclusive club.

Earlier this week we reported that Google had purchased 1 million new numbers for the service. Well yesterday the precious invites that everyone has been waiting for went out. Some of them at least. I know a few people that signed up some time ago for an invite that didn’t receive an invite. Hopefully at some point they will allow current users to invite a few friends, similar to how the Gmail beta got going. One cool thing about the number picker is that you can actually type in words, letters or numbers that you want included in your Google Voice number. I wish they had that when I signed up.

Google Purchases 1 Million Numbers For Voice Service

google-voice

By Chris Scott Barr

I’m a huge fan of Google Voice, which was previously known as GrandCentral. I was an early adopter to the service, so I’m one of the lucky few that actually managed to snag a number. If you’re not familiar, Google Voice gives you a number that conveniently forwards to any phones you would like. It includes features like sending/receiving text messages, transcribing voicemails and more. The only downside to the service is that they haven’t given out new numbers in a very long time.

While Google hasn’t yet announced their plans to start handing out, we do have news that the search giant has secured 1 million new numbers from Level 3 (which is whom they’ve previously purchased numbers from). There’s little doubt that Google will soon start sending out invitations. It’s (currently) a free service, so if you’re interested, I’d head over to their site and get registered.

Nokia is shipping more than 1 mil. 5800 XMs a month

We already know that Nokia 5800 XpressMusic has been quite a success in the countries where it has been launched. And it’s becoming even a bigger one fast.

It took Nokia about two months to sell 1 million 5800 XpressMusics since its launch – about 500K a month.

In their earnings release today Nokia said that they have shipped 2.6 5800 XMs during 1Q 2009 (Jan.- March), which translates into approx. 866K devices a month.

But during earnings conference call today, Nokia CEO said that the potential amount of Nokia 5800s shipped in Q1 was limited by the production capacity shortages.

But Nokia said that they have ramped up the production of Nokia 5800 XM handsets and are already shipping them in quantities exceeding 1 million units a month.

nokia-5800-xm

Despite the pretty bleak figures and huge sales drops in other segments, their first new S60 FP5 touchscreen device seems to be doing extremely well.

With the upcoming launch  of N97 handset and new FP5/Symbian^2 devices in Q3/Q4,  we should have 15-20 million devices running on this OS by year’s end.

Which, if Nokia gets OVI store and device interfaces right, should significantly boost developer interest in the platform. And next years Apple App Store like sensation might as well come from Nokia.
