Digg’s Kevin Rose has a solid (but far from perfect) track record when it comes to Apple rumors, and he just drove the nerds of SXSWi crazy with his latest gaze into the crystal ball: he says the iPhone 3.0 will have copy and paste. Kev says that the interface is much like the magnifying glass — you use two fingers to select the text you want, and then you can cut or copy. Sure, that’s great, but we think the bigger news is that Rose says 3.0 won’t have support for background apps — which makes his claim that that 3.0 will bring the iPhone “up to speed with the Palm Pre” a little suspect. We’ll find out what’s what in just a few days, but in the meantime check the video of Rose after the break.

We can’t say we’re surprised to hear that Kevin Rose, the master of Apple rumors himself, has been flapping his gums about iPhone OS 3.0, due to be unveiled at a press event this Tuesday.

Kevin has chosen to tell a large crowd at SXSW, a very good location to reveal the secrets of 3.0 because of the large congregation of tech geeks (we can say that, since we are tech geeks ourselves) that have flocked to Austin, TX.

So what’s the big secret? He basically confirms all of our hopes and dreams will come true, as copy and paste will finally be a reality on the iPhone. He says the interface is similar to the magnifying glass — use two fingers to select your text and copy away!

That’s not all. Rose also mentioned that these additions will bring the iPhone up to speed with the Palm Pre, though there will be no support for background apps. So what else will there be? We’ve already heard rather good rumors that 3.0 will also have MMS and tethering capabilities.

There’s the news. But let’s hear from you: what else will be added in 3.0? We saw a huge change from OS 1.x to 2.x, so we’re really looking forwarding to seeing another large jump in usability and capability.

Again, file all this in the rumors section until Tuesday. But we cannot WAIT for this to all go down.

Lots of Apple rumors today following the weekend whispers of a March 24 desktop hardware event, and they fall neatly along the plausibility spectrum:

First up, we’d say a bump of the Mac Pro to Intel’s upcoming Nehalem-EP Xeon processors is looking quite likely — famed OS X hacker netkas was poking around in a test build of OS X 10.5.7 and found support files for i7 chips lurking about, as well as drivers for ATI’s Radeon 4000-series GPUs. If you’re making a chart, this one’s right up there with an NVIDIA-powered iMac refresh — it’s a pretty obvious move.
Second, new entries for the Airport Extreme and Time Capsule have popped up in the FCC, and while the listed dimensions are exactly the same as the current editions, there are no model numbers and something internal has to have changed enough to raise ol’ Sammy’s brows. That could be as simple as a new radio hardware supplier or bigger drives, but if we were placing bets, we’d say both units are getting updated for simultaneous 5GHz and 2.4GHz operation — Apple’s really high on 5GHz for laptops and Apple TV, but the iPhone and iPod touch are 2.4GHz-only. Let’s call this one even odds, shall we?
Lastly, a new picture of that improbable five USB port Mac mini has surfaced, this time purporting to show the outside of the box. Considering the Photoshop wars the last image of this thing set off, we’d say this is the least likely candidate for a Philly Schills reveal, but then again, Apple’s been pretty leaky lately.

So, this is sort of fun. The leaked photo above appears to be of a new iPhone back — in matte black. Sure, we have to be highly suspicious of all kinds of purported evidence of new products in general, and we’ve heard enough crazy Apple rumors over the years to fill an issue of US Weekly. Regardless, this one’s worth at least considering: it’s got a model number, A1303, that’s previously unseen, but has all the other requisite data, including FCC ID numbers, that we’ve grown to know and love on the back of real, actual, undoctored iPhones. Look, it’s probably fake. Discuss.

For those with a whiteboard full of Apple rumors, you’ll been keenly aware of the fact that the whole iPhone Air terminology has been tossed around before in a joking manner. This, however, is not a joke. In fact, it’s a very real KIRF, and it’s possibly one of the most awesome we’ve ever seen. We mean, who’d ever want an iPhone nano when one could have — wait for it — the iPhone Air. Aside from clean, beautiful, streamlined edges, those fortunate enough to procure one from China will also find dual SIM card slots, an FM radio, Bluetooth, a multimedia player and a built-in camera. The KIRF game just got stepped up good fashion, and we love it.
