Intel debuts 2GHz Atom Z550 processor, demos Moorestown platform

In celebration of the Atom’s one-year anniversary, Intel’s unveiled Z550, the latest processor in the family and as the rumors suggested, it clocks in at a pretty impressive 2GHz along with support for Hyperthreading, all in under three watts of power usage. Additionally, it took the veil off of the Z515 with Intel Burst Performance Technology, which can bump the speed up to 1.2GHz. In more forward-thinking news, senior VP and general manager Anand Chandrasekher demoed its Moorestown MID platform on stage at a presentation, which we last heard was supposed to show itself in a more tangible form sometime this month via an Archos netbook. We’ve contacted Intel for video of that demonstration, so you’re just gonna have to wait a bit for that.

Update: The Moorestown demo was (how should we put this)… lame — from a consumer’s standpoint anyway. Instead of demonstrating it in a hand-held MID, Intel was again showing off silicon in a desktop rig strapped to enough life support to keep AMD afloat. The demo did show the 10x less idle power consumption promised but we’ve got a ways to go (2010 or before) before we see Moorestown product.

Archos 2 and Archos 4 flash players leak out

We haven’t heard anything official, but images of an Archos 2 flash player have turned up in a few places on the web today, along with word of an Archos 4. The 2’s already listed on Amazon — it’s not going to rock worlds, but it’s not bad for $60, with 8GB of storage and microSD expansion, a 1.8-inch 128 x 160 display and a voice recorder all in a .35-inch thick package. There’s also a 16GB version on Amazon.de for €68 ($92), but that hasn’t yet made it to the US Amazon site. The Archos 4 is a little more mysterious — all we really know about it is that it’ll have a four-inch screen and 16 to 32GB of flash. We’re guessing these’ll pop soon, we’ll let you know.

[Thanks, Bill]

Archos 5 Snap-on TV DVB-T tuner released

Yes, it looks goofy as hell, but we’re sure Archos 5 owners aren’t complaining about the new Snap-on TV DVB-T accessory — not only will it allow you to watch live TV, it integrates with the DVR features of the unit to give you portable recording. Interestingly, although the Snap-on TV features dual tuners, they’re used to increase reception quality, not to allow viewing of one channel while recording another, which is a bit of a bummer. Still, we wouldn’t lean on this for hardcore DVR use anyway, so we’re guessing it won’t be a huge issue. ArchosLounge says it should be on sale in Europe in the next couple weeks for less than €60 ($76), and they’ve also got some in-the-wild pics, hit the read link to check ‘em out.

Archos 10 netbook reviewed: a little rough around the edges

C’mon, did you really expect Archos to knock this out of the park on its first go? Okay, so we sort of did too, but we’re not baffled to hear that the Archos 10 could’ve used a few more days in the oven before hitting primetime. According to a review at Laptop, the unit does have one of the better software stacks, and the speedy hard drive led to some remarkably hasty boost times. That said, the $399 admission price puts it up against some pretty stiff competition, with the Aspire One D150 and the Eee PC 1000HE both offering up more longevous batteries and more comfortable keyboards. In the end, it boiled down to critics preferring the long life and comfy typing over the above-average software suite, but true Archos fanboys may be willing to overlook its drawbacks to still fall in love.

Archos to release Android phone / tablet

We’re guessing we’ll hear more about this at MWC, but TI just let loose a press release crowing about Archos’s use of the OMAP3 processor in an upcoming “Internet Media Tablet” that runs on Android and also doubles as a phone. No pictures yet, but the spec sheet makes it sound like a hotrodded Archos 5: five-inch screen, up to a 500GB hard drive, a battery capable of 7 seven hours of video playback, and Flash support, all in a package just 10mm (.39 inches) thick. The underlying OS will be Android, but Archos plans to really beef up the media features — there’s even mention of HD video playback. That sounds seriously sweet — if Archos ditches the current mushy resistive screen in the 5 for a capacitive unit, this could be a knockout Android device when it launches in the third quarter.
