Apple bites back at Laptop Hunter ads, ‘agrees’ with Microsoft that Macs are cool

Looks like Apple finally has something to say to Lauren, Giampaulo, Lisa, Jackson, and any future laptop hunters showcased in Microsoft’s new commercial series. In a statement to Macworld, spokesperson Bill Evans goes through the usual list of touted Mac features — security, stability, design — before quipping, “a PC is no bargain when it doesn’t do what you want.” Ouch. He continues by “agreeing” with Microsoft that, yes, everyone does think its computers are cool. We don’t expect Redmond’s ready to end the ad campaign anytime, and as enjoyable as this statement is, our only hope is that the gang at Cupertino ups the ante and retaliates tit-for-tat by sending Hodgman on an filmed adventure through Best Buy.

EMTEC’s Gdium netbook reviewed: colorful case hides an underwhelming device

When you’re drowning in a flood of copycat netbooks it’s hard to not to be drawn to one that’s a little different, one like EMTEC’s Gdium, bravely forgoing internal storage in favor of a 16GB thumb drive “G-Key” and willfully ignoring the ubiquitous Atom processor. But, such attraction only gets you past so many inadequacies, and according to Laptop Magazine’s review this one has plenty. Its customized Linux interface was said to be nice, but that 900MHz MIPS architecture couldn’t even keep up with average netbooks, its touchpad was borderline unusable, and after a few moments placed on a lap the thing turned into a 112-degree oven — just the sort of thing that won’t do your future generations any good at all. Sure, the $349 price is lower than expected, but with Mini 9’s going for $150 less it’s not exactly a bargain.

Sewell’s WiFi-based HD Media Extender should be more affordable

You know what’s most annoying about wireless HD solutions? Two things, really. First off, 95 percent of ‘em only come out to play at trade shows. Secondly, the other 5 percent require you to refinance your now-worthless home to even procure ‘em. Sewell, a company known for delivering unexpected treasures when it comes to adapters, has just pumped out its very own wireless HDMI media extender. The good news is that it’s shipping right now and it relies on 802.11a/n technology rather than WHDI, UWB or any other less ubiquitous option. The bad news is that 15 to 30 feet of cord-free AV goodness will set you back $1,199.95. You can weigh the pros and cons yourself, but we’ll be begrudgingly sticking with coat hangers cheap-o interconnects ’til it becomes just a touch more of a bargain.

Visa rolls out its first commercial NFC payment system

Nokia fulfilled its part of the bargain by rolling out its NFC-enabled 6212 cellphone last year, and it looks like Visa is now finally making the phone a good deal more useful — in Malaysia, at least. That’s where the company has launched its first commercial NFC (or Near Field Communications) payment service for point-of-sale transactions, which will let folks simply wave the phone in front of a reader to make a purchase instead of going to the hassle of swiping a card. What’s more, it doesn’t look like this is simply a limited trial, with 1,800 stores in the country ready to accept the magical payments out of the gate, and Maxis and Maybank on board to let folks easily access their credit account. Better still, Visa has also said that this move finally signals the shift from pilot programs to actual roll-outs, although it’s unfortunately not being all that specific about the next few markets on tap just yet.

Tesla CEO says Model S isn’t really expensive, when you think about it

With a promised price tag of less than $50,000 (after a $7,500 federal tax credit), the new Tesla Model S sedan is certainly a good deal cheaper than Tesla’s pricey roadster, not to mention its competitors, but according to Tesla CEO Elon Musk, it’s actually quite a bargain compared to your run-of-the-mill sedan as well. As Musk tells it, “the ownership cost of Model S, if you were to lease and then account for the much lower cost of electricity versus gasoline at a likely future cost of $4 per gallon, is similar to a gasoline car with a sticker price of about $35,000.” Musk further adds that the Model S would still be a bargain “even if gasoline were $1 per gallon,” saying that it costs just $5 to drive 230 miles. Of course, all of that assumes that you’ll actually be able to get your hands on the car one of these days, but Musk seems confident that’ll happen as well, saying that the company is “close” to receiving $350 million in loans from the U.S. Department of Energy, which would be used to build the plant in California that would manufacture the Model S.

Gateway intros four new gaming desktops

While Gateway’s been on the laptop bandwagon of late, it’s good to see the company doing its thang on the desktop front, too. Kicking things off is the bargain-priced LX6810-01, which houses 8GB of RAM, NVIDIA graphics, a built-in TV tuner and a $799.99 price tag. The even more affordable DX4200-11 gets going at just $609.99 and features an AMD quad-core CPU, ATI Radeon graphics, 6GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive. Stepping things up quite significantly is the FX6800-09, which sports a Core i7 CPU and a $1,649.99 sticker. Rounding out the bunch is the $1,299.99 FX6800-11 and the currently unpriced entry-level FX6800-01e. If any of these caught your fancy, head on past the break for a look at the full release.

Pentax’s white K2000 DSLR now shipping to style-minded photogs

We’ve been tracking this one since it first turned our heads back in December, so it only seems fitting to cloes things out and note that it’s now finally in-stock and available direct from Pentax. What’s more, it’s also still listed at $679.95 for the kit that includes both an 18-55mm and a 50-200mm lens, so it looks like that wasn’t a special pre-order price, though that certainly doesn’t make it any less of a bargain. Sold? Then hit up the link below to get your order in, and look for the camera to ship in as little as a day, according to Pentax.

[Thanks, Jason]
