Blackberry Tour on Verizon July 12, Will Be First to Launch

There is a lot of buzz on this here Blackberry Tour phone, and for good reason: almost every CDMA carrier still around is picking it up.

We’ve heard about Telus launching it July 15, and Sprint has mumbled something about “later this summer” (coincidentally, just like MMS on the AT&T iPhone…but we’re not bitter). But we finally have word on Verizon’s front that they will be first out of the gates by launching the Tour on July 12, three days before Telus does.

Pricing on Verizon’s version will start at $199.99, beating out Telus on both launch date and price.

Palm announces webOS SDK availability, Palm OS emulation for Pre, new cloud services

Well, it’s not quite the release date and price you were hoping for, but it’s definitely something. Today Palm — via a short keynote at the Web 2.0 Expo — announced that the company would begin taking names and numbers on the webOS dev site for potential developers who will receive an “early look” Mojo SDK. And that’s starting right this moment… as in now. That news alone would be big, but reps we spoke with said that the SDK would be made available to developers that the company will be cherry-picking as early as tomorrow. So if you were looking to get into the Pre app game, here’s your first big chance.

In addition to the SDK news, Palm is introducing a new set of “integrated cloud services” for developers (called Mojo Messaging Service) which will use a standardized publish / subscribe system to allow data to be bounced from the “cloud” to devices. Basically, it looks like this is Palm’s play for some of that push buzz — though the indication is that this service can and will be used for bigger tasks as well.

Finally, the company announced that third-party developer MotionApps will be making a Palm OS emulator available for purchase to coincide with the launch of the Pre. The application will be utilize the mass storage mode of the device to allow for drag-and-drop of PRCs, though according to the press release, the emulator “won’t be able to leverage core webOS functionality,” meaning that you probably can’t expect pure bliss across all of your applications, particularly those with roots that go deeper into phone databases and the like. What’s interesting to note about this app is that it’s being built on more than just the standard webOS SDK — an event which Palm called “unique.” They went on to assure us that this was a one-off to allow for emulation, but we’re thinking they might want to reconsider that policy by factoring in the clamor for serious gaming on a device like the Pre. You can check an image of the emulator after the break.

So, no pricing, no release date, but lots of movement on the developer front — which is big news if you’re a company trying to launch a completely new operating system. Still, we’re getting a bit antsy with all this waiting… it might be time to throw everyone a bigger bone than that tired “first half of 2009″ line, guys.

#CTIA09: HTC Snap/S522 with Inner Circle

When arriving at the HTC booth at CTIA 2009 we were certainly expecting to see new handsets such as the Maple make its debut and receive all the buzz. Yesterday we were handed a curveball however when HTC instead announced the Snap, also to be called the S522 in the US.

The HTC Snap appears to be a revamped T-Mobile Dash complete with rollerball and small housing. But the buzz about the Snap isn’t because of its size, speed, or camera. Rather, it is about the new “Inner Circle” email system HTC is releasing.

No, Inner Circle is not what the fave 5 service Alltel and Verizon are advertising; it is an innovative way to collect your email. Say you have hundreds of people sending you emails, and the emails with top priority keep getting buried underneath all the Nordstroms member discounts and other junk that doesn’t take precedence. Inner Circle lets you choose people whose emails will stay on the top of your inbox until you’ve read them, so they don’t get buried under less important emails.

Other notable features of the Snap include HSDPA, 1500 mAh battery, WiFi/GPS and 2 MP camera.

Here is a video and picture selection for your perusal.

NVIDIA licenses PhysX technology for Sony’s PlayStation 3

After being on the tip of gamers’ tongues last summer, NVIDIA’s PhysX technology has cooled a bit in terms of sheer popularity. That said, we’ve no doubt that the buzz will be back in force after this one clears the airwaves. NVIDIA has just announced that it has nailed down a tools and middleware license agreement for Sony’s PlayStation 3, effectively bringing the aforesaid physics tech to what’s arguably the most potent game console on the market today. As a result of the deal, a PhysX software development kit (SDK) is now available to registered PS3 developers as a free download for use on the SCEI Developer Network. What exactly this means for future PS3 games remains to be seen, but one’s things for sure: it’s only up from here.

Sony expands Walkman line with NW-S738FK and NW-S736FK

Though not nearly as buzz-worthy as Sony’s OLED-equipped NWZ-X1000, these two DAPs are still worth a look if you’re both in Japan and really into pastels. The NW-S736FK and NW-S738FK only differ with respect to internal capacity, as the former carries 4GB worth of tunes while the latter hosts 8GB. Both will soon be available in the wonderful nation of Japan in gold, black, pink and red hues, and each will support MP3, WMA, ATRAC, WMV, MPEG-4, JPEG and AAC formats. You’ll also find a 2-inch LCD, USB 2.0 connectivity, a 5 band equalizer, FM tuner and a battery good for 40 hours of audio playback (or 10 hours on the video side). The new duo is set to ship on March 14th, and yes, those perfectly matching speaker docks seem to be included for your convenience.

Hands-off with Palm Pre GSM

After all the buzz Palm Pre got during CES and after that, Palm’s presence at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona was a yawner.

Yes, they had a working GSM version of Palm Pre, and they were showing off various WebOS features to the public. But that’s about it.

No European launch announcement, no info about possible European partners and they did not even let us play with the darn thing. All we could do is watch the demo performed by a specially trained company reps.

What a treat…

Well, just in case you are not yet fed up with YouTube videos of Palm employees showing of WebOS features on Pre, here’s our own version:

And here’s some Palm Pre GSM pictures from the demo stand:

Fitness guru prepares to launch Wii Fit class-action suit, radio show

Well, this was probably bound to happen. A fitness “expert” named Michael Torchia says he’s now preparing a class-action suit against NIntendo which will apparently seek to remove its Wii Fit from the shelves unless they add warnings to the product. The offense? Torchia claims that the Wii Fit actually contributes to obesity, essentially because it claims to be something that it’s really not — namely, a fitness tool — and discourages people from doing more traditional exercise. He also, however, seems to be concerned that the Wii Fit is dangerous — mostly because it doesn’t stress warming up enough, and users can do the exercises wrong, straining or injuring themselves. Now, we’re not going to delve into the validity of his claims (though, how do you explain this dude? Just saying), but we should note that Torchia is apparently getting ready to launch his airwave-rocking AM radio show, “Shape Up, America,” and we figure he’s looking to drum up some buzz for himself, so we’ll be watching to see if he ever actually brings his suit against old Mario and Sons. Step on.

LiveSpeakR iPod / iPhone sound system gets reviewed

Many wondered whether the unique LiveSpeakR would ever break through the concept stage; clearly, it has succeeded in hitting mass production, and our pals over at TUAW were able to spend some quality time with it. Hailed as a “super cradle,” this device can latch onto an iPhone (original or 3G), iPod Classic and iPod Touch. Once attached, it can provide audio horizontally or vertically, depending on how you’d like to spin it. During testing, critics found the audio quality to be surprisingly nice, with them even being “astonished that such a big sound was produced by such a small speaker system.” As expected, bass notes were a bit hush-hush, but reviewers did appreciate the RF shielding that enabled iPhones to remain on while not introducing buzz. All in all, they felt it was a bargain at $129.99 (and even more so at the sale price of $99.99), but we’d suggest reading the full spill before handing over your hard-earned dollars.
