For some people, taking a sports car like a Lamborghini Reventón for a test drive is the ultimate dream, but I’m sure there are others who are more thrilled at the prospect of watching Searching For Bobby Fischer or seeing Garry Kasparov challenge IBM’s Deep Blue again. And oddly enough, Lamborghini has just the thing for that latter group as well.

This silver chess set by Tonino Lamborghini (son of Ferruccio Lamborghini) comes packaged in a well-appointed wooden case complete with protective storage slots for the pieces that are actually differentiated on either side of the board by their high-polish or matte finishes. And given the Reventón’s $1.6 million price tag, $395 for this chess set seems like quite the deal.

The easy route here would have been to find 32 old vacuum tubes and simply dress them up like standard chess pieces, but artist Paul Fryer opted to take the difficult route instead. His ‘Chess Set for Tesla’ still features 32 vacuum tubes, but they actually connect to each square on the chess board and when plugged in they show an icon on top representing what piece they are. According to the All Visual Arts site there were actually 7 of these produced, but since it was created last year I have my doubts any of them are still available.

Despite the haunting product shot, Phantom Chess doesn’t have any connections with the supernatural, so you ghost hunters can just move on. The real ’secret’ is good-old fashioned electromagnetism, though I’m sure you were able to figure that part out on your own. (It’s not like self-playing chess games are a recent innovation.) It’s designed for those who are truly lazy, and moving your piece is as easy as tapping the start and target squares and letting the game do the rest. In addition, not only will taken pieces be automatically moved to the side of the board, but you can even turn on Battle Chess like sound effects to make things more exciting.

Phantom Chess is powered by an 8-bit dual processor and has an ELO level rating of 1400 from the SSDF. (Swedish Chess Computer Association or Svenska schackdatorföreningen) In comparison, Garry Kasparov has a rating of over 2800, so while you won’t be competing against the most brilliant minds in chess, I’m sure the Phantom could still give most of us a good schooling. You can pick one up from Pro-Idee for about $213.

Laptops have been out-shipping desktops in the US for years upon years (upon years), but it wasn’t until now that such a scenario was true worldwide. According to iSuppli, global notebook computer shipments exceeded those of desktops for the first time ever in Q3 of this year, a “watershed event” according to it. More specifically, notebook PC shipments surged around 40% to 38.6 million units, while desktop shipments slipped 1.3% to 38.5 million. We’d say this is a marvelous day and a sign of what’s to come, but haven’t we all known that desktops were being reserved for hardcore gaming, computational science and games of chess for years now?
