Thanko’s USB-powered Health E-Cigarettes sound healthy

It was only a matter of time, and it took Thanko to make it happen. The purveyors of all things able to be tethered to that most special port now offer the affordable, USB-powered Health E-Cigarette; a name that cunningly stops short of raising the ire of the WHO while still giving you the hope that they might really be “healthy.” Like other electronic cigarettes, it uses a heating element to vaporize a nicotine solution to supposedly give you a purer smoking experience along with a suite of other benefits: preserving the health of those around you, keeping your teeth white, and even preventing fires. All that at a fraction of the price of other USB-powered cigarettes — just ¥2,980 (about $30). If that’s all it costs to make Smokey proud, you can sign us up.

Tab-Dock Turns Your Zippo Into A Mint Dispenser

Tab-Dock (Image courtesy Tab-Dock.com)

I don’t know if it’s the wanna-be John McClane in me, but for some reason I’m fascinated with Zippos. However, since I don’t smoke, and as far as I know I’m not a pyro, I usually don’t have an excuse to carry one around. But thanks to the Tab-Dock, I do now! It’s basically a mint dispenser designed to replace the lighter mechanism inside a Zippo. So instead of offering your friends a light, you can offer them a solution to their terrible cigarette breath.

Sadly the Tab-Dock is only available in Japan at the moment, unless their website ships outside the country. And even if it does, $70 (6,800 Yen) is a bit steep for a mint dispenser.

Add A HUD To Your Old Clunker

headsup

By Chris Scott Barr

Way back in 2007 David and I had the chance to go up to Michigan and drive some of GM’s current line of vehicles, which was a blast. The ‘08 Corvette was definitely my favorite, and one of the features that I thought was really cool (other than the horsepower, smooth transmission, etc.) was the HUD-style speedometer. It was nice not having to take your eyes off the road to check your speed (which was probably best when I was hitting 120mph on the test track). Well now you can add this feature to any car with the HG400 Heads Up Display.

This gadget uses GPS technology to measure your speed, which is likely to be more reliable than the speedometer in older cars. Besides just projecting your speed and heading onto your windshield, it can also be set to inform you when you go over a certain speed, hopefully saving you from getting a speeding ticket. It gets its power from your car’s cigarette lighter, and can interact with your other gadgets via Bluetooth, though I’m not really sure why my phone wants to know how fast I’m going. The HG400 seems like it might be cool, but unless you’re really worried about your car’s speedometer, I’m not sure it’s worth the $125 price tag.

[CES 2009] E-Cig Makes Smoking Good For You

ecig1

[Editor's Note: despite the claims in this article, OhGizmo does not condone smoking of any kind. As a matter of fact, we'd like to poll our audience on their knowledge of whether nicotine alone can be a health hazard or not. We're skeptical.]

By Evan Ackerman

This just in: smoking is good for you! E-Cig is an electronic cigarette that is able to duplicate the look, and in some cases the feel, of smoking. There’s a LED on the end, and a USB rechargeable vaporizer in the body. The bit where the filter would be is a disposable cartridge containing differing amounts of nicotine (if you’re trying to quit), or all kinds of other stuff like caffeine, flavorings, or even vitamins. The vaporizer turns the flavoring or whatever into steam when you inhale, and when you exhale it looks just like smoke.

The body is USB rechargeable, and will power through one and a half cartridges. Each cartridge is the equivalent of about a pack of regular cigarettes, and costs $5. The entire kit (including a pack of 4 cartridges) runs somewhere between $80 and $100.
