Let’s get one thing straight: we gadget geeks LOVE dates. We are always pressing to find out official release dates of phones and other big launches. So we are proud to announce that someone on the WinMo dev team’s blog has given us a launch date for Windows Mobile 6.5: May 11.

Interestingly enough, this date is the opening day of Microsoft’s TechEd 2009 Conference, which I think is the perfect place for such a large product launch.

Don’t start thinking, however, that this means we will be able to rush to our computers and download 6.5 on May 11 exactly. Devices pre-loaded with OS 6.5 will still be coming this fall, and most likely it will take some considerable time for new ROMs, official or unofficial, to start hitting the market.

With 6.5 being the focus of TechEd, we find that on the docket for TechEd is a number of classes and demonstrations specifically on the new OS. Windows Mobile 6.5 will feature a number of gesture and touch commands.

Microsoft has a lot riding on 6.5. Every other OS platform seems to be passing WinMo by and leaving it in the dust. Here’s to hoping 6.5 and subsequent Windows Mobile 7 sometime next year will make up for lost time!

After announcing the early-look Android 1.5 SDK on Monday, the Android Dev Team has now unveiled some UI framework changes that come with the new version of Google’s open source mobile platform. 

Android designers spent a lot of time to “refine and polish” the appearance of the OS.

For example, checkboxes and buttons now have a new look.

The images below illustrate the difference between Android 1.1 and Android 1.5 (v 1.1 appears in the screenshots on the left):

Of course, Android 1.5 is not yet ready for being installed on your smartphone, but developers can download the SDK from here and check out its fresh appearance.

So, it didn’t quite land before midnight as some had hoped, but we’re sure you were partying too hard to notice. The Dev-Team just launched its long-awaited iPhone 3G unlock, dubbed “yellowsn0w,” and while they’re still working out a few kinks (terming this release a 0.9 beta release), reports are already pouring in of successful unlocks. It’s also been confirmed that this release will work with the iPhone’s latest v2.2 firmware, and in fact requires that the phone be updated to v2.2 to run at all — much to the chagrin of folks who’ve held off on that update at the Dev-Team’s behest, we’re sure, but hopefully all will soon be forgotten in the new year… already freer than the last!
