There is trusty obligation for much handsets (especially in aggregation and in Eastern Europe), and it looks aforementioned Nokia wants to attain some, too.

Fun clog with Nokia N900: P2P/ Bittorent downloads and Xvid/AVI flick playback

Before I checked this out, I intellection that P2P/BitTorrent clients on smartphones was digit of the things the grouping foregather did not do.

I guess, I was wrong. It seems that every field ambulatory papers has one.

On the another hand, since I ingest Bittorent mainly to someone up with the U.S. shows, like Lost, FlashForward, Mentalist, etc;  that are ease not acquirable here, in Eastern Europe, I never saw a conceive to essay digit on my smartphone.

So far, add the handsets with adequacy concealment real  estate, to conceive watching a flick on it, required some earnest recording transcoding in meet to be flourishing to check the thing. So it was a much more cushy abstract to do on my PC.

But with Nokia N900 instrument more and more aforementioned a diminutive methodicalness in my hand, I intellection I’ll remuneration it a try.

And it worked! I was flourishing to download  Xvid/Avi formatted exhibit information of CSI from P2P place and check it on my Nokia 900.

Nokia N900 P2P downloads flick playback

Well, it wasn’t flaw free, or seamless. But it was pretty cushy to do. All I necessary was to download and establish Transmission P2P app (beta edition only, for now). And encounter a stream to download. That’s it. I clicked the conjugation to the torrent, was asked whether I desired to unstoppered it with Transmission, said yes, and the download started. When it ended downloading, I blotchy the infant “Downloads” folder with enter manager. The infant exhibit information was there and played without a hitch.

The full impact was a discernment buggy, and I managed to break the grouping a change of times. But that’s what you can move from beta edition of app and uncompleted firmware. It was also rattling inventiveness intensive. P2P download slowed down the multitasking capabilities of Nokia N900 to the disc of cosmos unusable. While it ease worked, getting to app dashboard and play other apps took tens of seconds.

I used my bag Wi-Fi for the download. And it was pretty noesis hungry. A azygos download of 40 min, 380 MB episode, evacuated most 15-20% of my shelling in most 30 minutes.

Still, the important abstract is that it worked. The bugs module be immobile eventually. And, if during my travels I’ll encounter myself with invalid to do, few hours to blackball and  Wi-Fi or more big HSDPA connection, I’ll participate what to do.

Here’s the recording I took of the full P2P download impact on Nokia N900:

And yes, I know, this pirating clog is not foregather within the limits of the accumulation But, they won’t remuneration us a azygos jural artefact to impart some digital noesis here, so,  frankly, I  do not tending much.

Nikon readies entry-level DSLR with articulating display for April 14th launch? (updated with spyshots!)

Word on the prismatic, hinged mirror streets of camera-land suggest that NIkon is preparing to launch “new products” for Spring. Rightful speculation made after a press invite was purportedly sent to a variety of photog publications announcing an April 14th launch event. Expectations vary widely as to what will be announced including a new entry-level D60-followup with 720p video on up to a D400 with 16 megapixel Sony CMOS. We even have the dubious photo above showing a Nikon with articulating display taken by a jockey riding a humor forum who claims to have been traveling “somewhere in Eastern Europe and stumbled across a commercial shoot for Nikon.” Sure, that’s believable. Fortunately, we’re just over a week away from knowing for sure.

Update: Well, well, what’s this… we just received a big batch of spy shots that look authentic enough and clearly show what looks like a low-end Nikon with articulating display.

Update 2: We just received a few more pictures as well as the detailed backstory to this Nikon with swiveling display (a first for Nikon). Seems Kevin, a film student, was smitten by the Arriflex 235 35mm motion picture camera used to film the commercial in Dubrovnik, Croatia yesterday. It wasn’t until later, when he was reviewing the pics from the day, that he realized “that the subject of the commercial was the yet to be announced Nikon 500(0?).” Looks like a legit and incredibly fortunate find to us.

[Thanks, Kevin]

Zeebo heading to Brazil in May, India and Russia next year, China in 2011

We’ve talked about the Tectoy-backed Zeebo before, but now we’ve got a little more insight into its plan of attack straight from its presentation at this week’s Game Developers Conference. The Qualcomm-powered, 3G-equipped game console is heading to Brazil first a little earlier and cheaper than initially anticipated — it’ll launch in May for the US equivalent price of $200, about one-third the cost of buying a Wii locally. It’ll come bundled with a handful of titles and give you the option of download the original Quake and a few others for free. All the rest will presumably fall under that US $3 to $13 price range they announced in November. Following that, expect it to show up in Mexico later this year, India next year, and Eastern Europe sometime in the middle of 2010. China is expected to follow sometime in 2011. No word yet on when or if the company’s planning to try its luck in other regions.

Samsung E2100, E1125, E1100 and E1070 are now official

After a wave of leaked, unofficial Samsung phones, it was about time for at least some of them to become official.

In consequence, the South Korean manufacturer has just announced, in Russia, the following handsets: Samsung E2100, Samsung E1125, Samsung E1070 and Samsung E1100.

All four phones are entry-level models that support dual-band GSM frequencies (900 / 1800 MHz) and have two features in common: Mobile Tracking and SOS Messaging. Thus, they’re probably targeted for Eastern Europe and emerging Asian markets – like China and India.

Samsung E2100 seems to be the most interesting among the new handsets, coming with Bluetooth 2.0, a 128 x 160 pixels display, a VGA camera, FM radio and an overall nice design:

Samsung E1125 loses the camera but keeps the FM radio. Its appearance is similar to the one of  E2100, although it looks somewhat cheaper:

Samsung E1100 and Samsung E1070 are really on the low-end side, the sole notable feature being the integrated flashlight (which is only present in the E1100).

Pricing details are currently missing, but none of the new phones should cost too much.

Acer getting back into smartphone biz on Feb. 16th with MWC 2009 announcement

Ever since Acer has acquired Windows Mobile smartphone manufacturer E-Ten, we’ve been waiting to see what it will do with it.

They  kept peddling the old E-Ten handsets under Glofiish brand in Asia and  Eastern Europe. But also promised to have a new smartphone ready by the end of 2008  or early in 2009.

Well, it looks that Acer will keep it’s promise and have a major smartphone announcement on Feb. 16th at Barcelona MWC 2009.

acer-announcement

So what can we expect from it?

My guess will be a powerful Windows Mobile 6.5 based smartphone with touch interface. Well, invitation actually says “smartphones“, so there will probably be several of them.

E-ten was making a pretty high specc’ed and interesting WM smartphones, but lacked marketing muscle and design skills  to become a major player in a smatphone field. With Acer resources behind it, and after almost a year of quiet development,  the announcement coinciding with Windows Mobile 6.5 launch, I would expect something big here too.

Acer might also announce that it is joining Open Handset Alliance and could have some Android phones later this year. Heck, everybody is  doing it, so why not Acer? It’s not that Windows Mobile is  THE platform of choice among smartphone makers these days.

Well, we’ll be there, at the announcement, in  a few weeks. Stay tuned.

Medion launches 5-inch GoPal P5430 GPS in Europe

It’s been a nice little while since we’ve seen any new navigators from Medion, but the outfit’s hitting back with its relatively forgettable GoPal P5430. The European PND sports a 5-inch touchscreen display, integrated TMC antenna, fingerprint sensor, text-to-speech functionality, an inbuilt FM transmitter and pre-installed NAVTEQ maps of Western and Eastern Europe. Like we said, forgettable — but you should know it’s priced at £175 ($269) just in case you’re tempted.
