Apple reports best ever March quarter with a $1.21b profit, calls netbooks “junky”

Crapgadget: No wonder the economy sucks edition

While we here at Engadget are doing everything in our power to get this philosophical “economy” back “on track,” it’s items like these that aren’t doing anything to help. No innovation. No stimulating capabilities. No utility at all, really. Just a webcam that scans business cards, an MP3 player shaped like a cow and a flash drive that’s absolutely not certified for circulation by the Democratic National Committee. Though, we must say that they’re all tailor made for Crapgadget, which is (just barely) good enough for us — drop your vote for the lamest below!

Read – CowCow MP3 player
Read – 4-Port Soccer Ball USB Hub
Read – MSI StarCam Flip Webcam
Read – USB Bird Fan
Read – Bling Bling USB Card Reader
Read – Obama Flash Drive

Crapgadget: Which of these wouldn’t get voted through by either party?

Twitter About Piracy, Get Free Movie Tickets

adventureland

By Chris Scott Barr

I think enough people have gotten fired over the stupid crap they post online that you know someone’s always watching what you say. So what do you think happened when a girl complains about a lack of torrents for a movie that’s still in theaters? You guessed it, someone at the movie studio found her tweet and took action. Of course the actions of the studio weren’t what you would expect.

It seems the Miramax Films has been keeping an eye out for people tweeting about piracy. In this particular case, a girl (we’ll call her Amanda, mostly because thats her name) posted on Twitter that there weren’t any Adventureland torrents up. Miramax saw the tweet and offered her a pair of tickets to go watch the movie in theaters. That’s right, they didn’t scold her for trying to watch their new movie for free. Instead they made sure that she had no problems viewing it without paying. Wow.

Honestly, in this economy it’s hard to justify a trip to the movies, as it usually ends up being a $30 affair. It was really nice to see Miramax step up and offer to give this girl a free night out. One one hand, they could have threatened the girl, and thus ensured that someone would pirate the movie just to spite them. However, they took the high road, and offered her a chance to see it on the big screen instead of pirating it. Well played Miramax, well played.

The only downside to this story is that Amanda only ended up getting one free ticket, instead of the pair she was promised. Still, one free ticket is better than no free tickets.

Tesla’s Roadster rolls 241 miles on single charge, annoys petrol pumps

If one drives the Roadster “as it was intended to be driven,” you’ll probably only get around 125 miles out of it before things slowly grind to a halt. If you toss on your economy shoes and take things a bit easier, it’s apparently possible to get well over 200 miles on a single charge. As the story goes, Tesla’s first all-electric whip managed to cruise 241 miles in a Monte Carlo e-rally, running from the town of Valance in France to the Principality of Monaco. Better still, the vehicle’s battery meter showed 36 miles left on the “tank” when it crossed the finish line, giving it a theoretical range of around 280 miles. If all these figures hold up under critical scrutiny, Tesla will set the world record for the longest distance traveled by a production EV on a single charge. Now, if only it could set the world record for most EVs actually produced by an EV company, we’d really feel the need to celebrate.

Has Pleo-maker Ugobe folded?

We don’t have any official word on this as of yet, but as our main man Ryan Block noted in a tweet earlier (and Wired speculated on back in February), it looks like Pleo-maker Ugobe may — in fact — be extinct. As of this writing, the company’s site was offline, and calls to the dino-bot factory have gone unanswered (though their voicemail system seems to be humming along just fine). While we haven’t heard a peep one way or another from the folks in charge, Wired reported in its article that the company was struggling months ago to stay afloat in our sinking economy. Could it be that people just don’t have a spare $350 to drop on a robotic toys these days? Say it ain’t so. Whatever the case, you can be sure that just like actual dinosaurs, the legacy Pleo will leave behind is rich, storied, and often violent. How about you there in / on the Interverse… heard any news about Ugobe lately?

Ballmer says tide has turned on Apple, “paying $500 more to get a logo on it” won’t work in this economy

Hot off word that Apple’s Mac and iPod sales for February took a 16 percent hit compared to last year, Steve Ballmer says the “tide has really turned” after recent Apple market share gains: “Apple gained about one point, but now I think the tide has really turned back the other direction. The economy is helpful. Paying an extra $500 for a computer in this environment — same piece of hardware — paying $500 more to get a logo on it? I think that’s a more challenging proposition for the average person than it used to be.” Of course, PC sales have been hit as well, but the numbers do point to Apple’s market share slipping of late. Of course, he’s not exactly complementing the masses when he says that people were paying $500 more a fruit logo. Maybe, just maybe design and software had something to do with it? Just something to think about, while you roll around in piles of cash and a dominant market share, Steve.

Macbook with Apple logo-turned-LCD now on eBay, naturally

Not that we can really blame the guy or anything, but don’t think that the selling of this machine at this point in the history of mankind is any sort of coincidence. Literally two days after we took a glance at this very Macbook — which had its Apple logo replaced with a bona fide, completely functional LCD — it’s up for auction at eBay. We know, the economy’s a little rough right now, so we’ll chalk this one up to a creature of the entrepreneurial spirit and move on. But yes, you should be prepared to pay top dollar (or learn how to mod) if you’re dead set on being its next owner.

DVD region code blocks British Prime Minister from enjoying Obama’s gift

“Oh, bollocks.” No, we can’t definitively prove that Gordon Brown said that after witnessing a “Wrong Region” code when inserting a DVD given to him by Barack Obama, but we’re sure something of the sort was uttered. You see, the ridiculous DVD region coding system recently prevented the British Prime Minister from viewing a set of 25 “American classics” on DVD, all of which were bestowed upon him by President Obama during a recent visit to Washington, D.C. We hate to bludgeon a dead mule, but seriously, when will the DRM madness end? Er, on second thought, maybe this is precisely what’s necessary to keep those region-free player outlets in business, and thus, the economy strong.
