Samsung Omnia II to cost EUR 549, available in August; Omnia Pro – EUR 499, ships in July

Few days ago we told you that Samsung Omnia II is coming this September with WinMo 6.5 preinstalled.

Well, that’s a bit of a wait for those eager fanboys that want to get their hands on this latest and greatest Samsung gadget RIGHT NOW!

Worry not, we have some good news about the new Samsung Omnia family, at least in some European countries.

Samsung has just announced the availability dates and prices for Samsung Omnia II and Omnia Pro devices in Belgium, and they are better then we reported earlier.

Samsung Omnia 2 OMnia Pro

According to Samsung Belgium, Omnia II will start shipping in August, with a suggested retail price of EUR 549. Samsung Omnia Pro will become available even earlier – in July -  for a suggested retail price of EUR 499. (The prices include VAT tax)

Of course, if you want to get one of new Omnias that early, you’ll have to settle for Windows Mobile 6.1 Pro OS for a while. But free upgrade to WinMo 6.5 will be offered on both handsets as soon as it becomes available.

Verizon confirms: BlackBerry Tour will be out on July 12 for $200

A few days ago, we’ve heard a rumor saying that Verizon might launch the BlackBerry Tour 9630 on July 12, for $199.99 on contract.

Well, now the largest North American carrier has confirmed that the new RIM smartphone will indeed be available starting July 12.

Customers can already pre-order the handset, through Verizon’s website.

Interestingly, Verizon will offer two versions of the Tour: a regular one, and a camera-free one – for those who work in institutions where camera phones are banned.

Sprint will launch the BlackBerry Tour for $199 as well, but an exact date for this is currently not known.

Bell Canada will also offer the Tour, sometime after July 15.

OhGizmo! Review – iBoo

iboo

By Chris Scott Barr

A few days ago I gave you my full review of the iPanda, and hinted that I had another similar device to check out. The other iPod dock that I was referring to was the iBoo, which is also from Speakal. This time around they have slimmed down a few of the features into a less-expensive ghostly shape. The main question is whether or not the lower price means lower quality.

So what are the main differences between the iBoo and iPanda? Well if you’ll recall the iPanda had 5 individual speakers (1 bass, 2 mids and 2 tweeters). In order to trim down the price the iBoo has only three speakers. The mids have been removed, while the tweeters are now picking up the slack. Another change is that the sub only puts out 9W, bringing the grand total to only 15 Watts of output.

iBoo

On paper it doesn’t look like the iBoo will be all that impressive when stacked up against its big panda brother. Once again I’m surprised. For obvious reasons, the sound wasn’t quite as strong, but the dedicated bass does deliver decent lows and the new tweeters produced some very clear highs. As one would expect, the mids were a bit washed out, but the overall sound was still fairly impressive given the hardware.

You might recall that I was a bit upset by the lack of controls on the iPanda, noting that only volume controls and an on/off switch were present. This is something that the iBoo thankfully has improved upon. The touch-sensitive volume controls are back (one on either side of the ‘head’) as well as the addition to a play/pause and back/forward navigational buttons. There is a constant blue light underneath the iBoo, which blinks to let you know a button has been pressed.

iBoo

The remote has been slimmed down to only 12 buttons. Since there are no bass or treble controls, these buttons are missing. Curiously they have decided to remove the controls for switching between your iPod and the auxiliary input.

Once again I decided to test out my iPhone, and was pleased to find that it worked for the most part. It charged, played and the iBoo’s controls had no issue getting it to play, pause or skip tracks. Airplane Mode is still needed to eliminate the annoying interference. The iBoo is not advertised to work with the iPhone, so this is still a welcome addition.

iBoo

If you aren’t too picky about your sound quality, I would certainly suggest giving the iBoo a shot. The audio is still good enough for most people, but you’ll get better sound than with some other similarly-priced products. The iBoo comes in red, white and blue, with a cost of $90 each.

iriver P7 unboxing and review

We’ve been getting friendly with iriver’s latest touchscreen masterpiece over the past few days, and have a few impressions to share. In many ways, though, the P7 is exactly what the pictures and spec sheet make it out to be: great design, great specs, few surprises, and little in the way of “interesting” functionality. While the Apples and Microsofts of the world keep on merging the world of PMPs with PDAs with phones, iriver seems content here to build a “mere” media player and leave it at that. Read our full impressions after the break.

Verizon netbook webinars starting soon — launches imminent?

We’ve known for months now that Verizon was looking to add WWAN-enabled netbooks to its growing repertoire of devices, and now it looks like hard facts are about to flow. An internal Verizon Wireless announcement has informed employees that managers will be required to attend a sure-to-be-invigorating netbook webinar to explain to them exactly what these not-at-all-recognized machines are. The lower level folks will have to suffer through the same slide deck a few days later, which leads us to believe that the carrier is just hours, days or millenniums away from spilling more details about this whole initiative. Can we offer a pinch of advice, VZW? Subsidize ‘em deep, offer more than two and cut the asking price on your HTC Touch Diamond by at least 50 percent.

Verizon Touch Diamond Confirmed for Release Tomorrow

A few days ago we mentioned that Boy Genius had rumors indicating the HTC Touch Diamond was scheduled for a April 10 release date on Verizon, and it appears those rumors were spot on.

Verizon has confirmed on its website that the Touch Diamond will indeed be available through business sales and online starting tomorrow.

One area the rumors were incorrect on was pricing. The Touch Diamond will be available for $299.99 after $70 mail-in rebate with contract, as opposed to the rumored $199.99 price tag. There was no word on pricing without contract yet, though we expect it to be above $500.

The Touch Diamond will feature Verizon’s signature Navigator system as well as Visual Voicemail, a 3.2 MP camera, and 2.76″ touchscreen display with TouchFLO.

There is no word as to when we can expect the Touch Diamond to show up in retail stores.

Blockbuster Going Bust?

blockbuster-ray-and-carl

By Chris Scott Barr

I remember a time long ago when I used to visit these very strange stores. I guess you would call them stores, but they were really more of a rental shop. Anyway, you would walk in and find the walls lined with movies that you could take home for a few days in exchange for several dollars. Of course if you didn’t bring them back by the designated time, you would be charged a fee. I hated those fees. Eventually technology advanced and no one needed to visit these stores anymore. You could either watch what I wanted by streaming it online, or with a few clicks have the movies sent to you via snail mail. Those companies that didn’t evolve to embrace the new technologies eventually died out, leaving only empty buildings in their wake.

It’s stories like that which I’m going to be able to tell my kids not long from now. Blockbuster, the largest movie rental store looks like it will be closing up in short order. They really don’t have much to offer the tech-savvy customers anymore, and rely on those that either haven’t hopped on the streaming bandwagon or are too impatient to wait a few days for their movie to arrive. Even if Blockbuster manages to find some more funding, I don’t suspect that they (or other movie rental shops) will survive more than a few years.

Video: Bumptop gives Windows 7 touchscreen PCs purpose

Bumptop has been around as a video concept for a few years. Now this amazing desktop organizer with a physics engine underpinning the UI is available for download (PC only). The software allows you to bump and toss weighted objects across the desktop and organize them into folders or piles the way you would on your real-world desk. It also includes the ability to pan and zoom on images with all the gesture support you’d expect. While a touchscreen (multi-touch supported when Windows 7 ships) display provides a more natural interface, Bumptop also works with a mouse. Check the video after the break — then hit up the download link below which we suspect you’ll be frantically searching for after the video ends. Granted, we don’t want to spend our days with arms outstretched at “work” in front of a touchsceen PC anymore than you, but software like this could be useful on our lesser used, kitchen PCs.

Update: Katherine Boehret and Walt Mossberg have posted their review after playing with the wares for a few days. It’s definitely “worth a try” but requires a shift from an application- to a desktop-driven approach to daily computing. Something they don’t sound eager to do regardless of how “fun” Bumptop is.
