Spy Shaver Camera DVR

Spy Shaver Camera DVR (Image courtesy Omejo)By Andrew Liszewski

I have to agree with the chaps at the Red Ferret Journal when it comes to this Spy Shaver Camera. No one on Earth, not even a bona fide spy, has any use for a video camera hidden inside a razer.

Seriously though, are you going to whip this thing out in the middle of a confidential meeting and start subtly shaving so that no one suspects you’re videotaping the proceedings? Or maybe you’ll fool the ushers at the local cinema into thinking that you aren’t actually trying to make a pirate copy of Transformers 2, but just felt that your 5 o’clock shadow had to go right then and there? I mean the Omejo website even has the audacity to say this thing is ideal for CIA agents, spy agencies and the police.

Anyways, the razer captures video at 640×480 to an AVI file and can continuously record to its 4GB of on-board flash memory until it’s full. The rechargeable battery is supposedly good for about 7-8 hours, though it’s not mentioned if that includes time spent shaving, or even if the razer portion actually works. (I assume not.)

The best part though is that this thing will set you back a ridiculous $240.

DIY Cigar USB Flash Drive

USB Cigar Flash Memory (Images courtesy Instructables)
By Andrew Liszewski

Instructables member ‘laxap‘ has posted a relatively painless tutorial on how to turn an actual cigar into a glowing, fully functional USB flash drive. The most involved part of the build is trimming, boring and then completely sealing the cigar inside and out using a wood primer, but there’s also a bit of wiring and soldering involved in order to replace the cannibalized flash drive’s read/write LED with one that will cause the tip of the cigar to light up while the drive is being accessed.

Texas Memory Systems goes Texas, hobbles together RamSan-620 5TB SSD “drive”

Way to play to your stereotypes, Texas. Texas Memory Systems just announced what it claims is the largest SLC SSD on the market, with 5TB of single level cell (the good kind) flash memory spread across a 2U rack shelf. The drive can handle 250,000 sustained I/Os per second, churn through 3GB of data a second, and has 80 microsecond write latency. Texas Memory Systems claims that for similar performance from a HDD setup you’d need half a million dollars and consume 20x the power. TMS calls the system “affordable for mainstream IT shops” but hasn’t mentioned a price or release date just yet. We’ll take two.

Thanko’s own necktie doubles as spy camera, naturally

A necktie from Thanko — you could tell this thing was only fit for a double agent already, couldn’t you? Freshly introduced and ready to draw attention to your poor taste, this here spy tie includes a built-in video recorder along with a minuscule handheld remote used to turn it on and off. The video camera itself is installed on a USB-equipped slab of flash memory (4GB, or about four hours of low resolution footage), making those tie-to-PC transfers extra snappy. And at ¥12,800 ($128), it comes off as a bona fide steal compared to less useful alternatives in Bloomingdale’s. Our only lingering question? What’s a brother got to do to get a clip on version?
