Solar Cell Phone Is Earth Friendly, Dirt Cheap

samsung-e1107

By Evan Ackerman

You don’t generally expect much from a cell phone that costs less than sixty bucks, and with the Samsung E1107, you don’t get much. It’s got a 128 x 128 display, an FM radio, and a built-in flashlight. The reason that you’d buy it is the solar panel the takes up the entire back of the phone, promising up to 10 minutes of call time per hour in the sun. While not the most efficient way of charging your phone, it’s a million times better than an iPhone 3GS at out of power performance, and at least gives you an option for mobile charging.

The other reason to get this phone is that it’s good for the Earth: it helps reduce global warming. Not in the way you’re thinking, that would be too obvious. No, I’m talking about how having a solar panel out in the sun absorbs photons, preventing them from imparting their horrible energy into the ground and making everything just a little bit cooler. If everybody was using solar powered cell phones, not only would we be saving energy charging them, but charging them would actually cool the planet by some fraction of a degree that I’m just going to go ahead and call significant and important! Yay solar power!

So far, the E1107 is available pretty much everywhere except the US. Why must they taunt us so?

Battery Powered Battery Charger Is Probably Fake, Maybe Shouldn

charger

By Evan Ackerman

Yes, I know that this thing is most likely not real, especially since it’s from a company called “Naivetek.” The idea is you stick D batteries in one side, and it charges up AA or AAAs on the other. It sounds silly, kind of like the solar powered flashlight, but it actually could end up being something useful.

Disposable D batteries have a typical capacity of 12,000 mAh, whereas rechargeable AA batteries normally have capacities of 2,500 mAh or less. It looks like this thing can hold maybe 4 D batteries on one side, and 2 AAs on the other. So hypothetically, that gives you 48,000 mAh capacity with which you could recharge your AA batteries 9 or 10 times. Say you’re off camping for a week and need to keep your camera running… Would you rather carry 10 sets of AAs, or 1 set of AAs, 4 Ds, and this charger?

Infrared Video Recording Flashlight

infrared-flash-light_6cf6g_54

By Evan Ackerman

Every night, farmer Bob tried to chase down those stupid little gray aliens with the big black eyes who were stealing his cows. And every day, farmer Bob’s friends would call him crazy. Until, that is, they saw the footage from his video recording flashlight with infrared LEDs. Knowing that aliens have deceptively poor eyesight, farmer Bob was able to sneak up to within 13 feet of them and use the 17 infrared LEDs on the flashlight to covertly illuminate the scene. Then, the integrated video camera captured the cownapping shenanigans in 640×480 video at 30 fps onto the 128 mb of internal memory, supplemented by a microSD card slot. Of course, it was easy for farmer Bob to find his way home later when he turned on the bright 3 watt white LED, and he could always look at the flashlight’s LCD screen to check on how much power was left in the 3 C batteries as well as the status of his recordings. All in all, farmer Bob was proud of his $399.95 investment, and it served him well, until one night, farmer Bob never came back.

So, let this be a lesson to you: if you go out stalking cow stealing aliens with a $400 infrared video recording flashlight, and your friends call you crazy, listen to them, ’cause man, you’re crazy.

Samsung to Unleash DLP Pico Projector Phones at MWC

We hope Samsung’s got a big enough booth at next week’s MWC to cover all the phones that will be shown off there.  The I7410 and W7900 will be Samsung’s first to offer a DLP pico projector.

The new phones are, in fact, one model that will be sold under different names in different markets. The pico projector will enable the user to view various image sizes, up to as much as 50 inches depending on ambient light conditions.

Happily, the pico projector’s not the only redeeming quality of the I7410/W7900.

samsungw7900-lg

The Samsung I7410 will also be sporting:

  • OLED high-resolution color touchscreen
  • 5 MP camera
  • View Powerpoint Presentations
  • Email Attachments
  • Flashlight
  • Flick navigation to view presentations

These are the major features so far revealed. Needless to say, we’re glad that Samsung decided to throw in other much-desired features in the phone in addition to the projector.

We can expect the W7900 to be on sale sometime this month in Korea, while the I7410 will be in Europe sometime soon.

The picture doesn’t make the phone look very thin, but i4u.com reports it will have a sleek and lightweight design — so we’re hopeful that it won’t be terribly bulky.

Here at Unwired View we can’t wait for MWC to show up next week!

Samsung E2100, E1125, E1100 and E1070 are now official

After a wave of leaked, unofficial Samsung phones, it was about time for at least some of them to become official.

In consequence, the South Korean manufacturer has just announced, in Russia, the following handsets: Samsung E2100, Samsung E1125, Samsung E1070 and Samsung E1100.

All four phones are entry-level models that support dual-band GSM frequencies (900 / 1800 MHz) and have two features in common: Mobile Tracking and SOS Messaging. Thus, they’re probably targeted for Eastern Europe and emerging Asian markets – like China and India.

Samsung E2100 seems to be the most interesting among the new handsets, coming with Bluetooth 2.0, a 128 x 160 pixels display, a VGA camera, FM radio and an overall nice design:

samsung-e2100

Samsung E1125 loses the camera but keeps the FM radio. Its appearance is similar to the one of  E2100, although it looks somewhat cheaper:

samsung-e1125

Samsung E1100 and Samsung E1070 are really on the low-end side, the sole notable feature being the integrated flashlight (which is only present in the E1100).

Pricing details are currently missing, but none of the new phones should cost too much.
