Sony Ericsson Bao flip phone shows up

We saw the Sony Ericsson Xperia Rachael and Kiki over the week-end, and now it’s time for yet another new, unannounced SE phone: the Sony Ericsson Bao.

The Bao is a clamshell that has an interesting design, looking a bit like a handset from Nokia’s Prism line-up.

Details about the features of Sony Ericsson Bao are completely inexistent, but we can see that the phone has a photo camera – and probably a hidden external display too.

Here’s the new handset in all its glory – if we can call it like this (images found at the Esato Forum):

No word yet on when Sony Ericsson intends to officially announce the Bao, but it will probably not be long until this happens.

Cheap Samsung Smooth U350 available from Verizon

Approved by the FCC back in January, Samsung Smooth U350 is now available for purchase via Verizon Wireless, shortly after the carrier has also launched the Samsung Trance.

With a 2-yr contract agreement, the U350 can be yours for only $29.99. The price goes up to $99.99 with a 1-yr agreement, and to $199.99 if you only want the handset, with no contract.

As Verizon puts it, Samsung Smooth U350 “appeals to tweens, teens and parents alike”. Truth is, the U350 is a basic clamshell that doesn’t have too many advanced features – although it does come with GPS and VZ Navigator.

The full specs list of Samsung U350 includes:

  • 1.9 inches internal display with 128 x 160 pixels
  • Bluetooth
  • Voicemail
  • Email, web browser
  • VGA photo camera
  • Talk time: up to 300 minutes
  • Standby time: up to 336 hours
  • 3.78 x 1.87 x 0.76 inches
  • 3.35 ounces

All in all, this may not be a bad choice if all you want is a simple and affordable flip phone.

Samsung M2310 and 2710 Music Phones Coming to Brazil

It looks like a couple new Samsung handsets are on the prowl. This time the Samsung M2310 and 2710, both music-centric phones, are on their way to Brazil. Both phones have music-dedicated buttons on the front, much like the M7600 BeatDJ. In fact, the phones seem to be simpler versions of the BeatDJ all around.

No word on time of release or availability, so right now this is all in the leaked phones file.

Here’s what we know on the specs so far:

M2710

samsung-m2710

  • Slider
  • GPRS/EDGE – No 3G connectivity announced yet
  • 3.5 mm headphone jack
  • Bluetooth
  • FM Radio
  • “Mobile Tracker” which tracks down the phone if lost/stolen
  • 2 MP camera
  • MicroSD
  • Accelerometer

M2310

samsung-m2310

samsung-m2310-02

  • Clamshell
  • GPRS/EDGE
  • FM Radio
  • Bluetooth
  • Music dedicated button
  • Mobile Tracker

So as you can see, both phones are very similar in overall features at this point, though we are sure that as more information becomes available there will be more differences between the two. At this point, it seems as though it’s just a difference between slider and flip phone.

Of course, as many leaks are, limited information has been made available yet. But stay tuned. We’ll get the scoop for you soon enough!

Nokia’s 7205 Intrigue for Verizon now available

Right on schedule, the Nokia 7205 Intrigue for Verizon Wireless is online and ready for purchase. Price is exactly in-line with expectations as well, at $180 with a two-year contract, plus a handy $50 rebate to bring it down to $130. Design-wise the flip phone is already a long ways ahead of the frumpy Nokia 6205, at a mere 0.55-inches thick, but there’s nothing much here to get Nokia’s GSM customers jealous — other than that subsidized price, of course. The handset has a 2 megapixel camera, A2DP Bluetooth, a fancy new homescreen (including Habitat Mode), PMOLED display on the the back cover, and a microSD slot.

Motorola VE465 to be launched by Alltel and Telus

The VE465 is one of Moto’s new semi-rugged entry-level clamshells that we first saw a few months ago in some leaked images.

Meanwhile, the phone appeared on Motorola’s official website, but with no details about where it will be launched.

Now we’ve spotted the VE465 on Alltel’s website, hence the Verizon-owned carrier will probably start selling it pretty soon – although pricing details are not known for the moment.

Also, Mobile Syrup quotes an inside source from Motorola Canada, saying that the handset will soon land on Telus, the second largest Canadian CDMA carrier. Apparently, Telus will name the phone “Motorola VE465 Active Edition”.

motorola-ve465-open

The official specs of VE465 include:

  • CDMA 800/1900/1700/2100 connectivity
  • 1.9 inch TFT internal display with 176 x 220 pixels and 65k colors
  • 1.05 inch CSTN external display with 96 x 80 pixels
  • Brew OS
  • Stereo Bluetooth
  • Music player
  • Video player
  • MMS, SMS, Instant Messaging, E-mail
  • 1.3MP camera
  • USB 2.0
  • MicroSD card support, up to 4GB
  • Talk time: up to 4.5 hours
  • Standby time: up to 12 days
  • 1.8 x 3.9 x 0.7 inches
  • 3.8 ounces

Motorola VE465 may not be as cool as the QA4 Evoke, but it should be a good choice for users who only need a simple and affordable flip phone.

Philips Xenium X530 specs unveiled, powerful battery on-board

Xenium X530 is the latest flip phone to bear the Philips name – although it’s actually manufactured by a Chinese company that bought the mobile division of Philips Electronics.

Since it’s from the Xenium series, the X530 comes with a long-lasting battery capable of providing up to 8 hours of talk-time or up to 850 hours of stand-by time.

The rest of its specs are pretty much on the entry-level side, but at least the phone looks good, both when closed and when flipped.

The full spec-list of Philips Xenium X530 includes:

  • 1 inch OLED external display

The handset was recently approved by the FCC, but it will probably be commercialized only in Asia and Europe. No word yet on pricing.

Cool8800C Flip-Phone With Usable Gaming Controls

Cool8800C Flip-Phone (Images courtesy Solomobi)
By Andrew Liszewski

While it’s not a name-brand phone by any stretch of the imagination, the Cool8800C handset available from Solomobi has a few features that might make the purchase worth the risk. Not only does it support dual-SIM cards that work at the same time, but it’s also got an analog TV tuner and pretty much every other feature you’d expect to find in a modern cellphone like ebook reader, FM radio, MP3/MP4 support etc.

But the most obvious and unique feature is the flip out screen and keypad which reveal another screen underneath and a set of dedicated gaming controls. Now you’re limited to only playing classic NES titles, but it comes with 3 already built-in and you can load other ROMS via a trans-flash memory card. I’m almost tempted to shell out the $140 to pick one up, except for the fact that it only supports GSM 900/1800 frequencies.

The $1.94 reason micro-USB is the new phone charging standard

Yep, we’re all gonna get squeezed for accessories again as the member companies of the GSM Association begin standardizing on micro-USB chargers, and while we’re happy that the madness is over, we can’t help but feel the decision to use micro-USB over the already-ubiquitous mini-USB was purely greed-driven — sure, micro-USB’s supposedly more robust connector can handle something like 10x more disconnects, but if mini is good enough for everything from pro-level DSLRs to rugged portable hard drives, it’s probably good enough for your average flip phone, don’t you think? Sigh.

Motorola Ruby (VE1) ditches weird spelling, not the RAZR look

We’ll hand it to Moto here — it truly is admirable that it didn’t use all caps and no vowels to name a phone that’s so strikingly similar to the original RAZR, but we can’t help but doubt this thing’s ability to sell. The Motorola Ruby (or VE1), will reportedly boast a 5 megapixel camera, a standard flip phone design and… well, that’s about it. Or, at least that’s all we know of. For those still agile enough to mouse to the read link after the massive facepalm you surely just initiated, there are a few more images down there for your perusal. “Enjoy.”
