Rare: Full Nintendo Game & Watch Collection !!! (Image behavior eBay)
By fear Liszewski

Before the Game Boy and handhelds from Tiger came along, I was concerned with Nintendo’s Game & Watch devices. But I had no aim the assemblage spanned some 59 assorted games! Were it not for the humbling $10,999 asking sound (and the fact that it appears the delude has ended) this aggregation capableness actually be tempting.

Didget Blood Glucose Meter Works With The Nintendo DS

Didget (Image courtesy Bayer Health Care)
By Andrew Liszewski

As the story goes, Paul Wessel noticed that his diabetic son Luke was always misplacing his blood glucose meter, though he never had any trouble finding his Game Boy. So Paul worked with pharmaceutical giant Bayer to develop the Didget which is a blood glucose meter that connects to the Nintendo DS and DS Lite systems. (It requires the slot 2 port so unfortunately it’s not DSi-friendly.)

It works like a standard blood glucose meter, you prick your finger and then insert the blood-soaked paper strip into the reader, but the test results are converted into reward points that kids can use to unlock new levels and items inside the Didget NDS game. The basic idea is to reward kids who regularly check their blood sugar levels which hopefully helps them develop good testing habits in the future.

According to the Didget website, the device will sell for about $50, though since it’s actually a UK-based site, there’s no word on if or when this will be available in North America.

Vintage Star Wars Electronic Laser Battle Game Makes Me Appreciate The Game Boy Even More

Star Wars Electronic Laser Battle (Images courtesy StarWars.com)
By Andrew Liszewski

StarWars.com took a brief (almost too brief) look at this Star Wars Electronic Laser Battle Game that dates back to A New Hope. The article mostly talks about the differences between the prototype pictured on the bottom and the final release version of the game pictured in the packaging above. While I would have preferred a few more shots of the actual game in action, and maybe even a video, the packaging shot still provides plenty of retro eye candy, and makes me appreciate all of my modern ‘electronic’ gaming consoles even more.

Nintendo’s Game Boy turns 20

In case you hadn’t heard, Nintendo’s trend-setting handheld, the Game Boy, just had its 20th birthday — and that’s no small thing for a game console. We won’t bore you with stories from our childhood about wasted time and missed opportunities spent chasing the dragon that was Tetris, but we will entertain the hell out of you with this vintage ad touting the system’s launch from way back in the totally excellent year of 1989. We know what you’re thinking: does the robot create the kid or just warp him there? And if he does create him, does that mean he’s some kind of metallic god? And does that mean that the kid kills god? And… why is the robot dancing? Hey — now you’re playing with power.

The Games We Played – Tetris (Game Boy)

Tetris (Game Boy) (Images courtesy Gizmodo & LooseCannon)
By Andrew Liszewski

This week marks the 20th anniversary of what I consider to be one of the greatest gaming consoles of all time, Nintendo’s Game Boy. Besides the fact that it was the only console you could stash in your school bag and play almost anywhere, the limitations of the Game Boy’s Z80 processor and dot matrix LCD display meant that developers really couldn’t rely on fancy graphics, cut scenes or other gimmicks to sell titles. They basically had to focus on gameplay. And arguably the poster child for simple but addictive gameplay on the Game Boy was the title that Nintendo decided to include at launch, Alexey Pajitnov’s Tetris.

Like Windows’ Solitaire, Tetris is the kind of game that you can enjoy for 5 minutes or 5 hours, which made it the perfect title to include with the Game Boy which could be used for killing 5 minutes in the dentist’s waiting room, or a 5-hour car ride. In addition, the basic gameplay mechanics and easy-to-learn controls meant that everyone could play Tetris, so suddenly those ‘new-fangled’ video games weren’t just for kids anymore.

And I won’t even get into Tetris’s ridiculously repetitive but surprisingly catchy soundtrack, lest I get it stuck in my head again… Damn!… Too late.

Game Boy Oddities – The PediSedate

PediSedate (Image courtesy Technologizer)
By Andrew Liszewski

Believe it or not, the Game Boy is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year, and to commemorate the occasion, Technologizer has put together a list of some of the weirdest accessories, variations and tributes to the most popular handheld gaming device of all time. But I’m pretty sure the PediSedate takes the birthday cake. It was designed to distract kids in a doctor’s or dentist’s office while they were being sedated with nitrous oxide. Now I’m pretty sure being asked to wear a headset like that wouldn’t make my visit to the dentist any more enjoyable, but I have to admit, if you stuck a copy of Link’s Awakening in my hands, you could gas me with anything you wanted.

Game Boy iPhone case instantly becomes best of all time

Sadly, there’s a good chance you already own an iPhone 3G case if you’re the proud owner of an iPhone 3G. That said, there’s still nothing stopping you from hopping a flight to Tokyo and replacing your current one with the best case in the history of cases. Sadly, the lad that snapped this shot isn’t sure where exactly this thing is sold, but if you’re savvy on the details, be sure to holler in comments below.

The Games We Played – The Legend Of Zelda: Link

The Legend Of Zelda: Link's Awakening (Game Boy) (Images courtesy MobyGames)
By Andrew Liszewski

I don’t drop the ‘L’ word very often, so when I proclaim my love for the Legend of Zelda series, you know it means something. And that love affair started with this game, The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, which I not only consider to be the greatest Game Boy title of all time, but one of the greatest titles on any platform, ever. Oddly enough, for the longest time I had no interest in the Zelda series, since the top down perspective made me think it was a turn-based strategy game, which I loathe. But I needed a game to pass the time on a long family vacation, and a friend of mine was good enough to loan me his copy. After just a few hours of playing, my eyes were opened.

I haven’t replayed Link’s Awakening since I finished it so many years ago, but I remember it felt like it would never end, and I couldn’t understand how Nintendo managed to cram such a large game into a single cartridge. Of course Link’s Awakening was actually the fourth game in the series, and even though I had a bona fide case of Zelda fever after playing it, I only went back and tackled the previous Super Nintendo title, A Link to the Past afterwards. But since Link’s Awakening, every Zelda title has been a must-have for me. (Except for The Wand of Gamelon, nooooo thank-you Philips.)

Famicom cart camera provides its own smile-catching technology

BenHeck.com forum member goteking apparently built this camera-in-a-Famicom-cart a little while back, but this is one instance when we’re more than happy to catch up a little late, even if we may quite not be able to bring ourselves to gut a cart of our own. As you can likely imagine, this mod mostly depends simply on choosing the right cart-sized camera, and goteking found that a standard Sony Cybershot point-and-shoot fit the bill quite nicely, though there’s certainly plenty of other possiblities out there (bonus points for anyone able to make an Game Boy cart camera). Hit up the link below for a few more pics of the camera, plus a glimpse of some of goteking’s other projects, including a VAIO DS and a VAIO Eee PC.
