BERTI (built by a partnership of the Bristol Robotics Laboratory and Elumotion Ltd.) is a fully automated robotic torso designed to perform “credible conversational gestures.” The robot is capable of quite complex hand movements, and, in the demonstration video above, plays a game of Rock, Paper, Scissors with a fine gentleman wearing a Goldfinger t-shirt, becoming another addition to the long line of gaming bots. When the doctors told amputee Mark Lesek that the severity of his injury made him ineligible for a prosthesis, he refused to give up. Left with nothing but his own welding and engineering business, several hundred thousands of dollars, and an indomitable spirit, the Tasmanian gentleman began the quest for an artificial arm. First, he shopped around until he found a doctor who agreed to order an $80,000 prosthesis from Germany — which eventually broke down (but not before he shelled out $6,000 for repairs on the thing). His next stop was the Branemark Osseointegration Centre in Sweden, where he was fitted with an $80,000 bolt that works as a sort of “artificial shoulder.” Still unable to find a suitable arm, the guy teamed up with one of his employees to design and build his own lightweight magnesium “body powered” prosthesis. But that’s not all — he’s also working with the University of Tasmania to develop a more agile computer-controlled arm, controlled with “a cap with electrodes which will be interfaced into the computer.” Let’s hope that all his hard work pays off — and that he teaches those doctors a thing or two in the process.

As the NFL gobbles up even more market share in the United States, it follows logic to see the next big in-home entertainment push side with it in order to garner attention. With every company and its third subsidiary twice removed trying to shove 3D into the home, we’d say starting with the NFL is a brilliant move. In a closed-to-the-public “proof of concept” demonstration, next week’s matchup between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will air live in 3D to select theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. Third-dimension mainstays 3ality Digital and RealD will play critical roles in the delivery, though it remains unclear what exactly the NFL and 3D backers in general plan to do afterwards. If you’ll recall, this isn’t the first pro sporting event this year that was beamed in 3D to nearby theaters, but we can’t think of anything more appealing than 300-pound gentleman crushing each other just inches from your retinas.
