LG announces 1080p DivX support, release windows for new TVs

LG’s always done a good job supporting DivX in its players and TVs, so this morning’s press release announcing that the company will offer 1080p DivX support in its latest gear isn’t all that surprising — we’re mostly excited because it suggests that the latest round of LED-backlit LCDs will arrive in “late May and late April.” That’s, uh, real soon now, so those of you waiting on a little Scarlet action in your lives should look sharp.

Hulu blocks boxee browser entirely, gloves get ripped halfway off

As a wise man once said: “Damn, that’s just cold, son.” Merely hours after boxee announced its latest alpha build along with RSS feed support for Hulu, said video portal has now blocked off boxee’s browser entirely from accessing its content. If you’ll recall, boxee saw a huge increase in interest when it first added easy access to Hulu, and once Hulu demanded that it be removed, boxee sadly complied. The latest move just seems “cold blooded,” as now boxee users who attempt to surf over via a Hulu RSS feed link will be greeted with an infinite amount of nothing. boxee is quick to point out that its browser doesn’t access Hulu content “any differently” than IE, Firefox, Opera or any other browser, which does a good job of explaining just how deliberate this move is. Needless to say, we get the feeling this bout is just getting started.

Update: boxee now says things are working. For the moment, anyway. Feel free to join us as we throw our hands in the air and give up on understanding this mess.

Protect Your Base With A DIY Paintball Turret

paintball-turret

By Luke Anderson

I’ve been out paintballing a few times, and it’s actually a lot of fun. The trick is to get hit as little as possible. While I enjoyed running around with a few friends on two different teams, I always thought it would be cool to have a set of turrets to defend each other’s bases. Of course building a paintball turret isn’t exactly an easy task, but if you do a good job at it, you’ll have a menacing contraption like the picture above.

Words cannot even describe the level of awesomeness reached by this DIY project. Imagine having a paintball turret that can fire up to 34 balls per second and can be controlled up to half a mile away with a HUD. If you’ve got between $500-$1100 lying around and about 30 hours of free time, you too can build your own menacing turret. I bet for a few extra bucks you could make it talk like the turrets in Portal.

Keepin’ it real fake, part CLXXXV: the world-renowned GiPhone F5

Whoever put together the GiPhone F5 seems to have done a pretty good job of mimicking the iPhone’s UI, but other than that the deets are rather sketchy. This bad boy seems to be a 3G handset with a capacitive 3.2-inch multitouch screen, Bluetooth, “kinds of games,” and up to 16GB internal memory. Sounds wonderful, sure, but don’t give up your HiPhone just yet — we’re still trying to figure out where this one is available, and at what price. Video after the break.

Samsung UltraTouch hands-on

The hits keep coming at MWC 09, and while we’re racing around from liveblog to liveblog, the crew at Engadget Spanish managed to snag some quality time with Samsung’s Ultra Touch S8300 slider. The refined Touch Wiz interface does a good job of transcending its terrible name — it’s not the prettiest thing we’ve ever seen, but it’s fast, reasonably intuitive, and seems to get the job done. Spanish-language video after the break — trust us, you’ll know what’s going on without subtitles.

MP3 Player Grenade Will Attract Unwanted Attention

mp3grenade

By Luke Anderson

Are you looking for a way to instill panic and fear into those nearby with only your MP3 player? Sure, you could go out and buy yourself a Zune, but you might just get pitied, rather than feared. No, what you really need to do is cram a Sansa Clip into a grenade housing.

Just look at that thing. If I didn’t know what was in it, I’d probably run like hell if I ever saw one. You’ve got ominous buttons, a switch and some sort of cord that’s probably connected to a wireless transmitter that will set off a chain reaction of explosions throughout the city. I really think the guy did a good job with this thing. By opting to use the buttons and switch that he did, it still has that military feel to it. You just have to wonder if he wears this thing on his belt while he’s out jogging.

Inscrutable QuantumGravity Watch

quantumwatch

By Evan Ackerman

This is the Quantum Concord C Lab QuantumGravity watch. I don’t know how it works, and neither does anyone else, but it certainly looks, um, intriguing. I also have no idea how you tell what time it is; I can only assume that there are some bits (like the external case) missing from this picture.

The one feature of this watch that we do know about is an aerial bi-axial Tourbillon mechanism, which is a gizmo that allows the important bits of the watch to freely rotate to keep them properly aligned with respect to gravity as the watch moves. Very cool, but it’s probably not as accurate as the waterproof solar powered atomic syncing watch that Casio gave out for free at its press conference (our lucky reader zedd zero is getting one of those in the mail), but for a purely mechanical watch, I’d imagine it does a pretty good job.

More details (and probably a price with a whole bunch of zeroes on the end) will be released March 26th; in the mean time, you can imagine how unpleasant the 48mm diameter case with a 22mm diameter depth would feel on your wrist and how you don’t really want one anyway.

Motorola Aura Makes CES Appearance

I can now say I’ve held a $2,000 phone in my hands. The Motorola Aura was making its rounds at the CES 2009, and I was able to snag some pictures of it in action.

While I am not the kind of guy that would just simply fork out a couple grand for a phone such as this, I came out rather impressed. It definitely feels like a solid phone, and I must say that the screen, albeit small, was the most beautiful screen I’ve ever seen on a phone.

So check out the pics for yourself. I’m planning on getting a video posted on the website as soon as possible as well. Motorola certainly did a good job of showing luxury in making the Aura.

Below, you will notice the gears in the back which allow the swivel mechanism to work properly.

Above, you notice how Motorola takes advantage of the tiny circular display to incorporate the menu.

The camera in action. While a circular display, the picture still shows up in a square. I had to double check for myself.

IXtreme 1.5 unlocks your non-Hitachi spinning Xbox 360

IXtreme 1.5 unlocks your non-Hitachi spinning Xbox 360We love a good hacker vs. hardware battle, and while Microsoft has thus far done a reasonably good job of keeping miscreants from diddling with the details of the Xbox 360’s firmware, applying patches and dropping ban hammers on those who don’t comply, as of this morning it seems to be losing the arms race. Team Jungle has released version 1.5 of its IXtreme firmware, allowing for (relatively) easy cracking and unlocking of Xbox 360 consoles containing LiteOn, BenQ, and Samsung DVD drives (i.e. the majority of them). That leaves only Hitachi owners out in the cold, but if that’s you don’t fret: your version is just a few weeks away. Happy homebrewing!
