Hang Your Guitar Like A Coat

guitar-hanger

By Chris Scott Barr

If you live in a small apartment or even a dorm, you know just how valuable every square inch of space can be. If you’re also a musician, you might have a hard time finding room for all of your equipment. Well here is a simple device that will give you somewhere to keep your guitar that’s out of the way.

Guitars can be a bit awkward to store since they are bulky, and even in a case they make it hard to store other items around them. Well if you’ve got a little space free on your coat rack, then you might check out this Guitar Hanger. Now your guitar takes up little more room than a winter coat. Of course you’ll need to make sure that the bar is sturdy before you go dropping a Les Paul or two on there. Try as I might, I couldn’t find a price for one of these. Surely we’re not talking more than $20 or so.

PSA: Advantageous auto-checks Amazon MP3 pricing from iTunes

So now that iTunes variable pricing is live, cross-shopping with Amazon is going to be a Thing — and while we’re certain slicker utilities will pop up soon, for right now we’d install Advantageous, which is just a little script that automates an Amazon search query from within iTunes. Yeah, it’s not perfect — it fails if you’re logged in with iTunes store credit and it’s far from bulletproof otherwise — but it’s a fine way to at least have kids or the less computer-savvy stop and check prices with at least one competitor before laying down an extra thirty cents on each purchase. This is has been a public service announcement… with guitars.

AK Rock Box Gaming And Storage Ottoman With Drum Lift

AK Rock Box Gaming and Storage Ottoman with Drum Lift (Images courtesy Amazon.com)
By Andrew Liszewski

Without a doubt, the biggest downside to Rock Band is the drum kit, guitars and other gear that ends up cluttering a corner of your living room when you’re not playing. But here’s an elegant solution to the mess. The Rock Box is an upholstered leather (or at least leather looking) ottoman designed to cleverly hide your Rock Band gear. It’s spacious enough to hold 2 guitars, the foot pedal and the microphone, and also features a specially designed lift that raises and lowers the drum kit with an easy one-hand motion. Now the Rock Box unfortunately isn’t cheap, it’s currently $199.99 on Amazon minus the Rock Band instruments, but it’s a neat solution that cleverly blends both form and function.

EDAG’s Light Car EV is open source, doused in OLEDs

We’re pretty comfortable with the idea of open source software running on computers and mobile phone — heck, even guitars — but cars? That one we’re still warming up to, but this concept vehicle from EDAG definitely helps. As its name implies, the Light Car – Open Source lets developers modify and / or improve upon the auto’s technologies — or at least put a SNES emulator on the back. The lithium ion-powered bubble car also sports an OLED-infused exterior for lights and signals that are supposedly useful both to the driver and other nearby motorists, but in actuality we suspect it’d just scare anyone tailing behind. No information on the interior, but we imagine a decked out dashboard and some futuristic chairs. It’s currently being shown off at the Geneva Motor Show; hit up the read link for more pics.

Pistol Instrument Cables Give Your Guitar Street Cred

Pistol Instrument Cable (Images courtesy Core One Creative)
By Andrew Liszewski

Tired of your guitar being laughed at by all the other guitars at rehearsal? Well I guarantee they won’t be laughing once you connect one of these bad-to-the-bone pistol shaped cables. Ok, technically it’s just the jack that’s pistol shaped… Ok, just the jack’s sheathing, but it still shows all those other musicians you’re not taking any crap! The cables feature “99.99% oxygen-free copper conductors and dual-shielded construction with a single end termination for strikingly fuller tone and drastic noise reduction, quality-molded connectors with corrosion-resistant 24K gold-plated tips to preserve signal strength, and flexible symbol-printed jackets” and come in lengths of 12 ft ($24.95) or 20 ft ($27.95) from Core One Creative.

Live Dream Gerbil-Sized Rock Band Stage

By Evan Ackerman

You might think that gerbils have no innate musical talent. You’d be wrong. Maybe. The real problem is just that we don’t give them the opportunity to express themselves with little tiny guitars and keyboards and drum kits. Sega Toys has come through with the Live Dream (”No Music No Live!”) rock band stage, featuring tiny little instruments on a tiny little stage complete with speakers and coordinated lighting effects. The instruments include guitar, bass guitar, keyboard, and drums with the rock set, or sax, bass, piano, and drums with the jazz set. You select what song you want to hear with the remote control, and then decide what instruments you want to play when by placing them on the sensor enabled stage:

Each set comes with a bunch of songs on an SD card (in a proprietary format, of course) including classics such as Eye of the Tiger and Ghostbusters, and more are downloadable over the internet if you just can’t get enough. I honestly have no idea what the appeal of this is or why you would want one (unless you have pet gerbils), especially for the price of $307.
