OhGizmo Review: iGo Netbook Charger

igo1

By Colin Ackerman

We’ve been fans of iGo’s noesis accessories for a while; with a grouping of complementary tips to calculate as some gadgets as you possess (almost) from some maker iGo supports, you effect to dispense around far inferior self-tangling cableage primed every of your clog juiced up and happy. iGo’s smart center is a Netbook Charger, fashioned specifically for, uh, netbooks. It’s foregather aforementioned the noesis brick that came with your netbook, with some key exceptions: it crapper noesis some netbook you effect a counsel for, it includes a emotional USB port, and it’s pretty. Read every most it, after the jump.

igo4

The emotional USB opening is especially handy, since the iGo amount crapper avow the locate of digit (or many) another chargers for devices that are USB compatible. For everything else, you crapper impart an entertainer cable from iGo that plugs into the USB opening and accepts iGo tips for $7. So basically, instead of carrying around chargers for your netbook, phone phone, GPS, digital camera, and weird tubey organism thing, you foregather arrange the Netbook Charger and a striking of iGo tips.

igo2iGo Laptop Charger, iGo Netbook Charger, accepted netbook noesis entertainer (MSI Wind)

I avow my netbook everywhere. Whether I’m motion on business, pleasure, pleasure, or pleasure, my methodicalness comes with me. And so does my phone phone. This amount lets me calculate both of these demise pieces of my chronicle with a extreme of chivvy and cableage, which is quite nice. It’s a diminutive discernment caretaker than the noesis brick that came with my netbook, which is unfortunate, but it’s small than that nonnegative the another chargers that I would ordinarily be carrying around. I also aforementioned the fact that the cloth that plugs into the surround is digit prong instead of three… It capableness not be the caretaker idea, but it trusty is convenient. A motivator is that the cloth is clastic and interchangeable since it features a accepted connection, gift you the choice of feat caretaker baritone profile:

igo3

The iGo Netbook Charger is a no-brainer if you domain a equal (or additional) noesis entertainer for your netbook, if you movement a aggregation with a striking of accessories, or if you commonly movement with binary netbooks… I’m not trusty ground you’d do that, but I’m trusty there are grouping discover there. If you’re bright with your current noesis adapter, though, I’d waffle to propose acquire digit of these only to avow its place. The USB opening is convenient, to be sure, but the iGo Netbook Charger is plausible large than the entertainer that came with your netbook, and at $50 (which includes 2 free iGo entertainer tips), it’s trusty not cheap. But sometimes the john is worth it, especially if you dislike hate HATE cables as much as I do.

If you and your netbook encounter yourselves absent from accepted outlets a lot, iGo also offers a Netbook Anywhere Charger, which includes methodicalness and form adapters for an contestant $20.

PhotoFast Compact Flash Adapters

PhotoFast Compact Flash Adapters (Images courtesy PhotoFast)
By Andrew Liszewski

A lot of high-end DSLRs still use compact flash cards instead of the ever-more-popular SD and its smaller cohorts. (The Nikon D3 comes to mind.) But that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to buy a CF card which are getting harder and harder to find these days. These handy adapters from PhotoFast allow to use standard SD and microSD cards in your camera via a CF type II compliant adapter. And I particularly like the model in the lower right-corner which actually comes with a built-in RAID controller allowing you to use up to 4 microSD cards at the same time, theoretically giving you about 64GB of storage with 4 x 16GB microSDHC cards.

All 3 of these adapters appear to be available from the PhotoFast website and range in price from about $25 for the SD to CF adapter to about $30 for the microSDHC to CF adapter. Though the microSDHC model with the RAID controller won’t be available until mid-July.

New Snow Leopard beta build includes screen recording capabilities, a certain je ne sais quoi

If you’re keeping track of Snow Leopard’s progress, you’ll be pleased to know that a new build (10A335) has been released into the hands of devs (and consequently, the world). Most interestingly, however, is that it seem this new iteration has a handy screen grab feature that hasn’t made an appearance until now — namely, the native ability (under QuickTime) to “record” your on-screen activities. There are other third-party apps that handle this duty, like the classily-named Snapz Pro X, but the inclusion in this latest beta will almost certainly mainstream the function. It should come in handy if you’re constantly trying to tell you parents how to change their network settings, or if you’re thinking about producing your own version of You Suck at Photoshop.

OCZ’s Neutrino netbook reviewed, deemed totally handy and easy to use

OCZ’s Neutrino netbook looks much like any other 10.1-incher, but this DIY affair comes with no OS, hard drive, RAM or multicard reader, leaving the users to decide for themselves how to outift it. The folks over at ExtremeTech are kind of unhappy about that point — they’d like to see it be more customizable than it is for the truly nerdy, but they’re still pretty happy with what OCZ’s got to offer. They did a test run, installing a 60GB SSD, one 2GB SODIMM and WindowsXP onto the machine, all which went off without a hitch. They didn’t try to use the Neutrino for gaming or anything, but it apparently handled everything else quite snappily, and overall, they seem to think that for $269 plus some parts and labor, you can’t really go wrong.

Nokia Easy Meet Offers Mobile Collaboration

It feels as though Nokia Beta Labs likes to come up with a new type of service every day. Perhaps it isn’t that frequently, but we do appreciate Nokia’s willingness to stay innovative and come up with new ideas.

The newest idea from the Beta Lab is Nokia Easy Meet. Easy Meet is geared to be a handy mobile collaboration tool, accessible from both mobile and PC.  In other words, if you are working with a group of people on a project, idea, file, or whatever it may be, you can set up your collaboration effort (or “meeting”) on its own unique URL and tell your group to meet together on that URL.

You can set up meetings on a regular schedule or just do it ad hoc.

As in the screenshot below, it’s easy to sign up for the service, and also easy for anyone with a cell phone or computer to get into that particular URL so you can work together in real time.

easymeet

According to the site, the following features can be supported by Easy Meet:

  • File Sharing, supporting PPT, JPEG and PNG
  • Chat
  • Meeting Minutes
  • Whiteboard
  • Gesturing
  • File Downloads
  • Participant Awareness
  • Remote Content Access (OVI Files).
  • One click to join a conference, including voice conference

Quite a few options that you can use to collaborate with a group of people on. I love the last option there, to be able to voice conference on it. Does this mean you can do a voice conference on any mobile device simply by accessing that meeting’s URL?

There is a video on the website listed below, so if you are curious as to what Easy Meet can really do, check it out right now. Also, go to this site for a link to sign up for the service.

Try it out and let us know what you think!

Gateway P-7808u FX gaming laptop unboxing and hands-on

The nice folks at Gateway were good enough to send over a fresh-out-of-the-oven P-7808u FX, their newest entry into a now-long lineage of gaming laptops. This $1699 machine replaces the similarly-priced P7811FX that we took a look at a few months ago and, like its older brother, packs some serious gaming-for-your-buck. Who are we to keep you from some delicious unboxing and hands-on dirtiness?

The latest FX sits in the same case as the P-7811 FX, including the gaudy black and orange effects that remind us of an 80s Chevy Monte Carlo (look it up, you’ll see what we mean). We’re ready for Gateway to leave this design behind — the FX deserves a new dress, because, really, she has a great personality. Gateway has kept the 5-in-1 multicard reader, HDMI port, triple USB 2.0 plugs, and handy eSATA port while adding a 9-cell battery that provides longer portable gaming time of around four hours. Don’t expect to throw this giant into a backpack any time soon, as the P-7808u FX weighs in at a bag-busting 9 pounds while a 17-inch widescreen monitor sits above a full-size keyboard complete with numpad.
