SmartFaucet Is Too Smart For A Faucet

Please, don’t stone me for saying this, but at some point I feel like maybe it’s prudent to draw the line when it comes to turning absolutely everything into an internet enabled, be-touchscreen’d gadget. This faucet, for example. The SmartFaucet from iHouse has adjustable flow, an internal heating coil to provide hot water faster, and LEDs that change color based on temperature. That’s all very nice. But it also has a little camera with face recognition software that will automatically adjust the water to the exact temperature and pressure that you like. And, the integrated touchscreen displays weather information, your personal calendar, and you can even somehow use it to check email.

I know it’s cool, but I mean, seriously, email? On a touchscreen on a water faucet? Overkill. What isn’t overkill is iHouse’s cell phone controlled bathtub, which will prepare the perfect bath for you with a single phone call. Brilliant.

All of this stuff is, of course, expensive enough that I can’t tell you how expensive it is.

EcoDrain heat exchanger makes good use of warm waste water

File this one directly in the “why didn’t I think of that?” folder. As the bathroom gets more and more eco-friendly, the EcoDrain is stepping in to take advantage of all the hot water that goes to waste each time you shower. Put simply, this user-installed heat exchanger transfers heat from hot shower waste water to cold incoming water, essentially cutting water heater usage by as much as 40 percent. Of course, we’ve never seen a plumbing job that was anything close to simple, but for savings like this, it may just be worth the trouble.

Temperature-Sensitive Glass Tiles Make For A Psychedelic Shower

temperature-sensitive-glass-tiles

By Luke Anderson

My shower is one of those places in my house that I don’t generally care to upgrade or make look any nicer than it already is. It’s one of those tub/shower plastic insert things that you tend to see a lot of these days. I keep it clean and it looks decent, so why would I bother to spend a lot of money on someplace that I only see for about 15 minutes a day? I’ve honestly not seen anything to change my opinion of the matter, that is until I came across these Temperature-Sensitive Glass Tiles.

These awesome glass tiles will change color depending on their current temperature. You just tell the manufacturer what base temperature you want, and every 6-10 degree increment from there activates a different color phase. There are three phases in all, and once you’ve passed the third, it will return to the original color. I wouldn’t recommend installing these in a house with more than one or two people in it. You can bet that the first person in the shower is going to use up all the hot water just messing with the colors on the tiles. Of course you’ll need to rob a bank first, since a single 4” x 4” tile will run you $33, or around $300 per square foot.

Zodi Camp Shower Gives You 10 Minutes Of Hot Water

zodi-travel-shower

By Luke Anderson

When I go camping, I like to stick to a tent and a sleeping bag, rather than taking a big RV like some people tend to do. I like not being troubled by all of the extras and just enjoying nature. Unfortunately after a few days of enjoying nature, one can get a very unnatural smell. A lot of campgrounds have showering facilities, but if you’re out in the wild, you won’t be as fortunate. If you are still wanting to take a nice hot shower now and then, I suggest investing in one of these Zodi Camp Showers.

The shower holds enough hot water for you to get a good 10-minute shower, which should improve your smell considerably. The water can be adjusted up to 100 degrees and is heated with small propane tanks while the pump is powered by 4 D batteries. That hot shower comes at a hefty price, $90 to be exact.

Student charts electrical usage in real-time, much to Big Brother’s delight

It’s our best guess that University of Florida PhD student Jason Winters woke up at 10:00AM ET this morning and took an approximately 18-minute shower. How did we come to this conclusion? Using an AC clamp attached to an ioBridge, the biomedical engineering scholar measures the main electrical lines entering his house and sends the data to a Google charts widget on his personal blog that reports the kilowatt-hour usage in real time. As a footnote, he presents an example graph of when the hot water is turned on, which then produces close to 4500 watts. That’s just over the amount of power he used this morning for about 1100 seconds. Of course, we can’t say for certain any of these morning events really transpired, but then again, we don’t exactly want to know. Hit up the read links for directions on DIYing this.
