Sonos 2.8 adds Deezer Radio to multi-room systems in Europe, updates iPhone controller

After plunking down a grand for Sonos’ impressive two-room bundle, it’s always nice to see a freebie or two arrive via software updates. While not quite as big a release as version 2.7 was for Sonos’ wireless (or wired) multi-room audio system, 2.8 does add free Deezer Radio service to Sonos users in 30 countries across Europe — think Last.fm’s artist smart lists with the ability to skip tracks only better dressed and with a knowledge of geography. Sonos is also updating its free iPhone / iPod touch controller application by extending native language support (Dutch, French, German, Italian, Spanish, and Swedish added to English) and granting access to the sleep timers and wake-to-music alarms you’ve setup using the Sonos software controller running on your desktop. This update brings the features of the iPhone Controller up to par with Sonos’ own dedicated controller and thus makes the €399 price for the CR100 all the more ridiculous.

Fortunately, for a limited time (until May 31st) Sonos is heavily discounting its €399 Sonos Controller as long as you buy it bundled with a ZonePlayer — a box required for adding new speaker zones. The ZP90 and Sonos Controller combo is available for €599 (a savings of €149) while the amplified ZP120 and Controller combo is available for €699 (a savings of €199). The offer seems bent on preventing you from purchasing a relatively fragile but multi-purpose €219 iPod touch with onscreen keyboard to control your whole-house audio instead of Sonos’ rugged and water-resistant CR100 Controller with scroll-wheel QWERTY. Try harder Sonos, even Apple learned to ditch the scroll-wheel. A few more interface shots after the break.

Bell Canada to release the Palm Centro on February 2

Palm Centro may be available in Canada (via Rogers) since last year, but if you’re a customer and a fan of Bell, you can’t buy the smartphone. Well, at least not yet, because the largest CDMA Canadian carrier is getting ready to release the Centro too, on the 2nd of February.

For a limited time (right after the launch), the 3-yr contract price of Palm Centro will be of only $49.95. After that, you’ll have to pay $199.95 to get it – with the same 3-yr contract agreement, of course.

Or, if you don’t need a new contract, you will have to spend no less than $399.95 for having the CDMA Centro in your pocket.

Sure, the Centro is nothing like the new (and unreleased yet) Palm Pre, but it can still be a good deal for those in need of a simple and quite affordable QWERTY smartphone.

CherryPal calls its Bing netbook a nettop, can’t win for losing

We know, these newfangled terms can certainly get confusing, but you’d think a company producing miniature laptops would do a little research before assuming that “nettop” is actually just another word for “netbook.” CherryPal has made it exceptionally easy for us to joke on it by introducing the first nettop we’ve ever seen that actually looks nothing like a diminutive desktop. In fact, the eco-friendly Bing has a fold-up 10.2-inch LCD — you know, exactly like a laptop. Inexplicably launched this weekend at the Sundance Film Festival, the machine includes a 1.6GHz Atom N270 processor, 1GB of DDR2 RAM, a 160GB hard drive, three USB 2.0 ports, an SD / MMC / MS card reader, WiFi, dual speakers, a 1,024 x 600 resolution panel, 0.3 megapixel webcam and a headphone jack to boot. Pricing is expected to hover around $250, but for a limited time, users interested in an actual nettop (imagine that, right?) can snag the Bing along with the C114 PC for a grand total of $399.

Cowon’s S9 Curve gets toyed with on video, UI thoroughly investigated

It’s one thing to have a look at a new user interface in pictures, but watching someone navigate it on video is just so much more meaningful and soul stirring. Cowon’s S9 Curve isn’t due out in South Korea for another five days or so, but it looks like someone with a video camera and a YouTube account completely missed the memo. For a likely limited time, the video just past the break shows off five minutes of admittedly responsive UI interaction, complete with the ability to alter the equalizer preset from the Now Playing screen (what a concept!). Be warned, though — the first album to pop up is Mamma Mia!. Terrifying, we know.

La Fonera 2.0 emerges for developers, encourages USB-related shenanigans

La Fonera fans, it’s finally time to celebrate. Iteration 2.0, which is fittingly dubbed the Liberator, is at long last ready for shipment… to developers, at least. The La Fonera 2.0 box will certainly look familiar to owners of the first, with just 1,000 of these being prepped for consumers in France, Germany and Spain. The intention here is for devs to start toying around and “programming their own applications for other Foneros out there.” More specifically, the creators are hoping that more USB functionality will be worked in so we’ll eventually have Fonera WiFi boxes that play nice with USB hard drives, printers, scanners, webcams and all manners of cooling devices. It’s available now (for a limited time, obviously) for €39.95 ($53) if you’re up to the challenge. Oh, and if you design an application sweet enough for the Fonera 2.0, you’ll be reimbursed the purchase price — not bad, eh?

VUDU price dramatically slashed to $99* for the holidays

We know it’s a touch late to be ordering up a gift for unwrapping on the 25th, but this one just might be worth the IOU you’ll likely be forced to give. VUDU’s movie set-top-box, which typically goes for $299, is now priced at just $99 for a limited time. Of course, VUDU forces you to purchase $50 in movie credits along with it (thus the asterisk being applicable here), but it’s not like you’re just going to buy this and never watch anything, right? There’s also a bundle that includes a Wireless Kit at 50% off (now just $49), making the grand total for a VUDU, $50 in movie credits and a Wireless Kit only $198. Let’s just say now is about the time to buy if you’ve been holding off on a VUDU — we hear those HDX titles are mighty tasty!

[Thanks, Rob]
