After hearing initial reports that Nokia’s Comes With Music subscription service was doing “okay,” word on the streets is now… even less good. According to estimates released by Music Ally at an Association of Independent Music conference in London, Nokia’s gotten about 23,000 subscribers to the service since it launched last October. That’s not a great number, if it’s anywhere near accurate… though Nokia has “refused to confirm” whether or not it is. Tim Grimsditch, head of Nokia’s product marketing division added that it’s “a very new business model, we’re live in five markets and the numbers only mention one. We’re going to continue to develop the model and fine tune how we market it.” That said, the report can’t be terribly heartening either way you slice it, and is rather reminiscent of N-Gage’s niche market status if you ask us.

Remember that T-Mobile BlackBerry event that was scheduled for April 22 in London? Well, it turns out that the event wasn’t related to the launch of a new smartphone, as we initially thought.

Instead, T-Mobile UK and RIM have announced a new way to pay for a BlackBerry device, called Pay Once.

Starting May 1, T-Mo’s customers in the UK will be able to buy a silver BlackBerry Pearl 8110 for £179.99 (€200 or $260), without having to sign a contract agreement.  

The price includes, besides the Pearl 8110 smartphone itself, one year of unlimited email and Internet and “pay as you go top-ups for calls, texts and MMS”.

All in all, the Pay Once deal is definitely not a bad one for those who don’t need a more advanced BlackBerry (like the Curve 8900), or for those who are new to RIM’s devices.

While I wouldn’t necessarily call it a ’smart’ material, UK-based Squid London has recently sold out of a limited edition collection of umbrellas featuring hydrochromatic inks that turn color when they get wet. Before the rain starts falling, the umbrellas have a rather bland and desaturated color scheme, but as soon as mother nature lets loose, the umbrella appears to come to life which could help cheer you up if the foul weather has put you in a bad mood.

According to Wikipedia, hydrochromatic ink was originally developed by a subsidiary of the Pilot Pen Company in Japan, and is probably most easily recognizable as the ’secret’ behind the Aquadoodle children’s toy.

Philips’ groundbreaking Cinema 21:9 HDTV looked so curious when it launched a fortnight ago that we actually questioned its authenticity. Clearly, this beauty is for real. Pocket-lint was lucky enough to be on-hand for its unveiling in London, and it hosted up a nice video showing off the 56-inch beast in action. The black bars you’ve grown used to detesting were indeed gone, and while Philips wouldn’t dole out any hard specifications, we are told that it boasts five HDMI sockets, a Spring release date and an estimated £3,000 ($4,276) price tag.
