It does indeed effect a touchscreen, but tapping on the concealment is exclusive used for change the colored dot-matrix designate between the current time, date, communication settings or a bespoken communication up to 10 letters or characters in length. Report: Nokia’s Comes With Music not selling very well in the UK

After hearing initial reports that Nokia’s Comes With Music subscription service was doing “okay,” word on the streets is now… even less good. According to estimates released by Music Ally at an Association of Independent Music conference in London, Nokia’s gotten about 23,000 subscribers to the service since it launched last October. That’s not a great number, if it’s anywhere near accurate… though Nokia has “refused to confirm” whether or not it is. Tim Grimsditch, head of Nokia’s product marketing division added that it’s “a very new business model, we’re live in five markets and the numbers only mention one. We’re going to continue to develop the model and fine tune how we market it.” That said, the report can’t be terribly heartening either way you slice it, and is rather reminiscent of N-Gage’s niche market status if you ask us.

T-Mobile UK announces Pay Once for BlackBerry

Remember that T-Mobile BlackBerry event that was scheduled for April 22 in London? Well, it turns out that the event wasn’t related to the launch of a new smartphone, as we initially thought.

Instead, T-Mobile UK and RIM have announced a new way to pay for a BlackBerry device, called Pay Once.

Starting May 1, T-Mo’s customers in the UK will be able to buy a silver BlackBerry Pearl 8110 for £179.99 (€200 or $260), without having to sign a contract agreement.

The price includes, besides the Pearl 8110 smartphone itself, one year of unlimited email and Internet and “pay as you go top-ups for calls, texts and MMS”.

All in all, the Pay Once deal is definitely not a bad one for those who don’t need a more advanced BlackBerry (like the Curve 8900), or for those who are new to RIM’s devices.

BakerTweet, the Arduino-based pastry early warning system

Usually when we cover the baked goods beat ’round here it’s in the form of a gadget-themed confection, so anything that actually empowers our sweet tooth is not only brilliant, it’s dangerous! That’s why we were really excited (and a little scared) to come across BakerTweet, a WiFi-enabled, Arduino-based prototype that one mounts on the wall of their bakery. Items are added or removed via web interface, which you can later select by simply spinning the dial. When the sweets come out of the oven, press the button to Tweet your eager customers and await the stampede. The prototype unit is being used at Albion’s Oven in London, but we’re looking forward to seeing it hit the streets Stateside at some point in the near future (even if our waist isn’t). Nintendo working up “major app strategy” for DSi?

Every major handset has one, so why not the handheld gaming consoles, right? According to a report on Develop, the suits at Nintendo are thinking of making the DSi Shop a bit more than it is right now. Reportedly, bigwigs from the Big N who met up at a company developer conference in London discussed “an exciting and major new app strategy for the DSi,” with one source noting that the firm was keen on having devs “offer all kinds of software once the DSi store fully launches in Europe and America.” It makes sense to have downloadable short-form titles available; after all, the DSi has an inbuilt camera and microphone, making it perfect for downloading “DSi Ware-like” apps. We’ll be keeping a close eye on Iwata’s Game Developers Conference keynote for more insight, but ’til then, we’re filing this one in the “we want to believe” folder.

Umbrella With Hydrochromatic Inks Changes Color When Wet

Color Shifting Umbrellas (Images courtesy Squid London)
By Andrew Liszewski

While I wouldn’t necessarily call it a ’smart’ material, UK-based Squid London has recently sold out of a limited edition collection of umbrellas featuring hydrochromatic inks that turn color when they get wet. Before the rain starts falling, the umbrellas have a rather bland and desaturated color scheme, but as soon as mother nature lets loose, the umbrella appears to come to life which could help cheer you up if the foul weather has put you in a bad mood.

According to Wikipedia, hydrochromatic ink was originally developed by a subsidiary of the Pilot Pen Company in Japan, and is probably most easily recognizable as the ’secret’ behind the Aquadoodle children’s toy.

Philips’ 56-inch Cinema 21:9 HDTV gets showcased on video

Philips’ groundbreaking Cinema 21:9 HDTV looked so curious when it launched a fortnight ago that we actually questioned its authenticity. Clearly, this beauty is for real. Pocket-lint was lucky enough to be on-hand for its unveiling in London, and it hosted up a nice video showing off the 56-inch beast in action. The black bars you’ve grown used to detesting were indeed gone, and while Philips wouldn’t dole out any hard specifications, we are told that it boasts five HDMI sockets, a Spring release date and an estimated £3,000 ($4,276) price tag. Vid’s after the break, per usual.
