iriver P7 unboxing and review

We’ve been getting friendly with iriver’s latest touchscreen masterpiece over the past few days, and have a few impressions to share. In many ways, though, the P7 is exactly what the pictures and spec sheet make it out to be: great design, great specs, few surprises, and little in the way of “interesting” functionality. While the Apples and Microsofts of the world keep on merging the world of PMPs with PDAs with phones, iriver seems content here to build a “mere” media player and leave it at that. Read our full impressions after the break.

RAmos unveils its Skynet-approved Terminator T12 media player

Ah, RAmos — you know what the people want, and you just keep crankin’ ‘em out. A worthy successor to the T10, the T9, and the T8, the Terminator T12 switches things up a bit with a thumb wheel for (hopefully) improved navigation over its touchscreen-centric brethren. And the specs seem more than sufficient, including a Rockchip RK2806 (1024 x 720) chipset, 5-inch (800 x 280) display, Wolfson WM8988 audio, and TV out. Storage and price have yet to be announced, but you’ll know as soon as we do. Since this is a tie-in for the upcoming Terminator movie, we expect to see some suitably gaudy / awesome promo material coming down the pike. You hear that, RAmos?

Western Digital 2TB Caviar Green, 8TB ShareSpace and friends eyes-on

Can’t say we really expected to see anything from Western Digital here at CeBIT, but sure enough, it brought along its 2TB Caviar Green hard drive, WD TV HD media player and the new 8TB ShareSpace NAS. Along with oodles of other external, internal and somewhere-in-between drives, too. We actually kind of spazzed upon seeing two terabytes of empty space within a single internal HDD, but hopefully the blur isn’t too noticeable. Enjoy!

iriver SPINN gets knocked off as… a digital camera

We were pretty impressed by the unique design of the iriver SPINN media player when we got our hands on it last year, but that doesn’t mean it’s a design that’ll instantly improve any device, as fully exemplified by this little wonder now making the rounds in China. Apparently dubbed the SWIVEL-CAM, this one’s a 5-megapixel shooter that packs an 8x digital zoom (and digital zoom only), along with a 3-inch LCD, 16MB of internal memory, an SD card slot for expansion, and video recording in either 4:3 or 16:9 modes, not to mention the usual e-book reader, voice recorder, and “game player.” Intrigued? Then you can get your order in right now for $120.

Philips debuts GoGear Ariaz, Opus PMPs

Philips has been keeping things relatively simple with its GoGear line as of late, but it looks to be getting back to full-on PMPs with its latest pair: the GoGear Ariaz and GoGear Opus. The GoGear Ariaz is the slightly smaller of the two, with it packing a 2-inch display, along with 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB of storage, an FM tuner, a built-in mic for voice recording, and a somewhat unique interface that includes a combination of “touchscreen buttons” and a large rocker key. The Opus, on the other hand, appears to be an updated version of one of Philips’ original GoGear players, and packs a larger 2.8-inch QVGA display, your choice of 8GB, 16GB, or 32GB capacities, built-in Bluetooth, and integrated support for the BBC’s iPlayer. No word on a release ’round here just yet, but both will apparently be available in Europe in April for between €79 and €179, or roughly $100 to $230.

Myka’s BitTorrent-friendly home media player now in production

It’s been just about ten full months since Myka’s BitTorrent box was formally introduced to Earthlings, but it seems like the wheels are finally turning on production way across the way in China. According to a promising update on Myka’s official website, “production is in full swing,” which means that boxes should start arriving to eager consumers in around four to six weeks. For those unaware, this here box pulls down torrents as you sleep and then plays ‘em back nicely on your connected HDTV. Users can also load up additional media on the inbuilt 80GB, 160GB or 500GB hard drive, but first you’ll need to hand over $299, $349 or $459 depending on just how capacious you like your media servers.

[CES 2009] Hands-On With The Samsung YP-Q1 Diamond Media Player – Bigger Than I Thought It Would Be

Samsung YP-Q1 Media Player (Image property of OhGizmo!)
By Andrew Liszewski

Samsung’s YP-Q1 personal media player comes in 4, 18 or 16GB sizes and boasts such features as a Rhythmizer screensaver that syncs to your music, an audio upscaler that restores higher frequencies lost when your music is converted to MP3 or WMA, playback speed control without pitch shifting and a text to speech converter for listening to text-based files. And I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a company not caught up in the whole “let’s make it as small as we can” mentality.

BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 hits India via Airtel

After it was released in the US, Canada and several European markets, RIM’s BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 has now reached India too.

The first ever BlackBerry clamshell smartphone is available across India thanks to Airtel, the country’s largest mobile operator, and it can be bought, from authorized channels, at the retail price of Rs. 21,990 (around $458).

Letting aside its unusual (for a BlackBerry) form factor, the 8220 brings all the features that the previous Pearl models have, and even more.

For example, the new smartphone has two displays: a QVGA internal one, and a 128 x 160 pixels external one. Also, its SureType QWERTY keyboard is significantly larger than the ones packed by the other Pearls, this providing an enhanced texting experience.

Other features include:

  • Wi-Fi
  • HTML browser
  • DataViz document reader
  • BlackBerry Maps
  • Media player
  • Bluetooth 2.0
  • A 2MP camera with flash
  • And a 1GB microSD card

RIM might also release the BlackBerry Storm in India (via Vodafone, of course), but for the moment there’s nothing official about this.
