iPlayer DS/DSi Flash Cart Promises Native Divx, Xvid, QT & MPEG Video Support

iPlayer (Images courtesy iPlayer)
By Andrew Liszewski

Because of its hardware limitations, the Nintendo DS has never really been a great platform for watching videos. But a new flashcart called the iPlayer could change that. Like with all the other flashcarts available for the DS the iPlayer is able to load “homebrew software” though the makers claim it will NOT be able to load backup ROMs.

What it will be able to do though is natively play video files without having to convert them to a DS-friendly format first, thanks to a built-in decoding chip. So you’ll be able to load AVI, RMVB, RM, FLV, ASF, MPG, MOV, WMV, DivX, or XviD video files onto a microSD card and play them natively off your DS. However, the iPlayer only supports videos up to 640×480 in res, and you’ll probably see poorer playback performance with anything larger, though they will work. There doesn’t seem to be any pricing info for the iPlayer just yet, but if it really doesn’t support the loading of backup ROMs I think it’s going to be a tough sell since the DS is first and foremost a gaming platform.

Covert Spy Camcorder Sunglasses

By Andrew Liszewski

It’s nice to see that advances in technology have paved the way for a self-contained pair of video recording sunglasses, but the real thanks has to go to Oakley who’s convinced the world that these chunky designs are fashionable. Still, I don’t think anyone would figure out this particular pair of sunnies is capable of recording 640×480 VGA quality video to its 8GB of internal memory just by looking at them. That memory is also expandable thanks to a microSD card located on one side of the glasses, while recharging is facilitated via a discrete mini USB port. $192 from Geek Stuff 4 U.

T-Mobile Unveils First 3G Sidekick

sidekicklx

By Shane McGlaun

When the Sidekick first launched long ago, I thought it looked really cool and wanted one. Then I found out that the T-Mobile network really sucked outside most large cities and decided to make do with the then cool Motorola Razr. Those of you who can actually access a T-Mobile network may be glad to hear there is a new Sidekick in town.

T-Mobile has unveiled the Sidekick LX calling it the first 3G Sidekick ever. The handset is aimed at the social network crowd and includes a software bundle for Twitter, Facebook, and MySpace. The phone comes in two colors — orchid and carbon. Orchid looks more like maroon to me and the carbon is just a fancy name for plain black.

The handset has integrated GPS with Live Search, a 3.2-megapixel camera with LED flash and video recording capability, Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, and an integrated music player. The camera can record video and upload it to social networking sites via email or file transfer. The swiveling QWERTY keyboard returns from previous models and a 1GB microSD card is included. The 3.2-inch screen has a resolution of 854 x 480. The phone will cost $199.99 when it goes on sale next month.

SanDisk slotRadio player launching to much fanfare on March 31st

Oh, wait — we were just kidding about the whole “to much fanfare” bit. SanDisk’s slotRadio player, which we’re still struggling to understand, is all set to ship on March 31st after debuting alongside a gazillion other gadgets at CES. For those who’ve forced themselves to forget, this microSD music player can handle your own jams on your own microSD card, or alternatively, can accept pre-loaded Billboard hits cards which house over 1,000 songs that are nicely categorized by genre. It’ll be available from SanDisk’s own website on March 31st for $99 (which includes a card with over a thousand songs), and it should be ready to ruin Father’s Day when it slips into Radio Shack locations shortly thereafter.

Brother’s SV-100B Bluetooth “Document Viewer” looks like an e-book reader to us

It’s finally coming true; all those e-ink readers we expected would flood the market after the Kindle’s initial release were apparently just waiting for its successor before jumping into the fray. Joining recent announcements from iriver, Neolux, and Plastic Logic is Brother, with the SV-100B. The company is calling it a “Document Viewer,” featuring a 9.7-inch, 1200 x 825 display — larger and stocking twice the pixels of the Kindle 2. However, it’s not meant to be a Kindle-killer, instead aimed at business users who will pair this over Bluetooth with PCs or mobile devices to keep its microSD card filled with content, content that must be run through a converter app prior to display. No MSRP was announced, but given its focus on the corporate clientele it will surely be priced accordingly when it ships early this June.

Update: Will commented to let us know this will apparently retail for ¥140,000, or just shy of $1,500. So, yeah, not really aiming for the consumer market here.
