Nextar’s MA809 PMP is seductively thin, still too pricey

We’ll hand it to Nextar here, the MA809 is sexy enough to roll with the hottest PMPs on the market today, but the pricing strategy needs a serious revision. Said player sports a 2.8-inch display (400 x 240 resolution), an integrated voice recorder, support for MP3 and WMA files, an FM tuner / recorder, built-in speaker and a stopwatch to boot. Furthermore, it includes 2GB, 4GB or 8GB of storage space, while the microSD card slot leaves open the possibility for expansion beyond that. Nextar claims that you’ll get up to eight hours of continuous music play or up to three hours of video viewing with a fully charged Li-ion, but we still don’t see it really breaking through by being hosted up at Sears for $99.99 (2GB), $119.99 (4GB) and $149.99 (8GB). Maybe we just need a little hope, though. The full release is after the break.

Hannuri Biz offers up Nurian TX-3 PMP / e-dictionary combo

Hannuri Biz already delivered that one-two punch with its FX1, but the long awaited successor (TX-3) has finally hit the scene. Launched over in its home nation of South Korea, this PMP / e-dictionary hybrid boasts a 4-inch touchscreen (480 x 272), an SDHC expansion slot, 1,050mAh rechargeable battery, USB connectivity, a voice recorder, e-book reader, support for MP3 and video files, a PDF viewer and an FM tuner to boot. In case that’s not varied enough, there’s also the obligatory dictionary, which includes 14 volumes in 13 different languages. Samsung’s YP-VP1 voice recorder with VoicePix photo tagging

Here’s something we don’t see everyday, a sexy voice recorder with a built-in digital camera. Samsung’s YP-VP1 made its first appearance at CES, apparently, and now sees its official Korean launch. The 2GB / 4GB recorder features a directional mic that records up to 30 hours in 192kbps max quality with support for MP3 / WMA playback (up to 50 hours) tossed in for grins. As to the camera, a VoicePix function allows you to tag a recording with a photo — something that should help with searching for specific items later on.

Samsung YP-Q1 Media Player (Image property of OhGizmo!)

Samsung’s YP-Q1 personal media player comes in 4, 18 or 16GB sizes and boasts such features as a Rhythmizer screensaver that syncs to your music, an audio upscaler that restores higher frequencies lost when your music is converted to MP3 or WMA, playback speed control without pitch shifting and a text to speech converter for listening to text-based files. And I have to say, it’s refreshing to see a company not caught up in the whole “let’s make it as small as we can” mentality.

Samsung’s DVD-H1080 looks like a large pebble, plays DVDs

While Samsung’s design may be changing in the Blu-ray player department, its latest DVD player pays homage to last year’s DVD-F1080. The all new, very pebble-like DVD-H1080 touts the company’s Touch of Color design, weighs just over two pounds and is only marginally bigger than the DVDs it will one day play. As expected, the deck features 1080p upscaling to go along with the USB host function which adds support for DivX, MP3 and JPEG files. There’s nary a word on price, but it should be landing at your favorite (and least favorite, for the record) retailer in the first half of 2009.

Sonoro Eklipse iPod / CD sound system hits the FCC

Sonoro’s Eklipse iPod / CD sound system has been available in Europe for a few months now, but it hasn’t exactly made much of a ripple ’round these parts. That looks like it could well be changing, however, as the device has just recently landed in the hands of the folks at the FCC, who unsurprisingly seem to be particularly interested in the system’s remote control. As for the rest of the system, you can expect to get an always welcome OLED display, along with 7.5W of power output, a headset jack, a standard 3.5mm input to accomodate your non-iPod devices, and support for MP3 and WMA-loaded CDs in addition to plain old audio CDs. Of course, an FCC appearance doesn’t always assure a US release, but if there is one, you can probably expect to pay about the same €499 (or $690) that it currently demands in Europe.
