Looks like the latest Garmin Oregon nav unit is following in family footsteps by leaking out a little early — listings for an Oregon 500 and Oregon 500t appear in the latest REI catalog. The pair are basically the same as the Oregon 400 / 400t, with the addition of a built-in digital camera that’ll enable you to take instantly-geotagged features. Definitely a neat idea, but convenience won’t come cheap: the 500 lists for $549, and the 500t is $599. No hints at a release date, but we’d guess it’s coming soon.

The little magnetic light looks just like an underwater contact mine, except that it’s far less dangerous unless you stuff it full of high explosives, in which case it will only be moderately less dangerous. It’s a pretty neat idea, though: each one of those twelve “spikes” has a neodymium magnet at the tip, and you can use them to stick the light to any metallic surface and orient it just the way you want it. The wide-angle white LED looks like it provides plenty of illumination, and although it’s hard to tell from this picture, the light is tiny, about the size of a golf ball. It takes three watch batteries, but it doesn’t seem to say how long they power the light for or whether or not they are replaceable. My guess is “a while” and “yes,” but I don’t know for sure.

Here’s the coolest stuff from the Toshiba booth at CES. There’s plenty more cool stuff after the jump, and I’ve saved the best (IMO) for last.

Now this is a pico projector. It’s a prototype (can’t tell if it was functional or not), but Toshiba is shooting for 2010 in this form factor.

Toshiba media server. It’s a prototype and it may not even be functional, but it’s got cool LEDs and it’s a dodecahedron!

Spill resistant sealed keyboard. The demo says 3 minutes, but the rep said that the water had been on for 6 hours. Available now in Toshiba business notebooks.

Water resistant internet viewer. Looks pretty close to waterproof, to me. Great for showing movies to your fish. Prototype.

SCiB external battery pack. We had a look at these back in October; they charge to 90% capacity in 10 minutes and are good for 5,000 cycles. You’ll be able to get adapters to power your laptop from this. Should launch in December of this year along with the SCiB laptop batts.

SD photo album. Kinda a neat idea, and it’s got a nice look, even if the screen is a bit small. Rep said there had been a lot of interest, but there are currently no plans for production.

Leaning LCD TV. You don’t need a stand or a mount, it just leans against the wall. It’s also a pretty nice TV, with a mirrored glass bezel with LEDs underneath and an integrated DVR with a totally unnecessary but awesome 256 gig SSD.

Prototype internet viewer. It’s powered by an integrated methanol fuel cell good for one week of normal use. It comes in 7″ or 4″ and the keyboard is somehow wirelessly connected to the screen, but the screen is also a touchpad so the keyboard is optional based on what you need to do. Note that this thing is completely functional, and the Toshiba rep told me that it’s due out in December 2009. I don’t believe it (it was a PR rep, not an engineer), but that’s what they told me. Fingers crossed.

2:37pm God damn connection. Launching a new slim wall mount, that reduces the TV to wall gap from 2 inches to 0.6 inches.

The LED 8000 delivers 240Hz refresh rate. Chrome accented design.

The PDP 850 plasma TV is only 1 inch thick.

2:29pm Finally talking about new products. I’m getting some connectivity problems. Strategic products:

- LUXIA LED TV line. Redefines energy efficiency, creating a new TV category. Crazy ass contrast ratios, super slim, 40% less power consumption than conventional LCD TVs. Mercury and lead free.
- Samsung LUXIA LED 7000, with Medi@ 2.0 multimedia experience. Internet TV.

2:24pm Talking green. Their LED TVs and washing machines have contributed to Samsung being awarded 1,858 eco-friendly certifications.

2:21pm Talking about Intuitive Emotional UI. Being able to customize your menu screens in various Samsung devices, like cameras, video enabled MP3 players. Like the P3. Demo of the interface does indeed show improvement.

2:18pm Launching Samsung LUXIA LED TV, slim TVs with built in tuners, up to 55 inch. Unsurpassed brightness and clarity. Using the unified UI mentioned earlier, to strengthen the brand.

2:15pmWireless Connectivity Solution. Sharing of media between devices. Wireless full HD content transmission. Mobile WiMax. WiMax?

2:14pmYahoo! launching Widget Engine, a developer platform to allow third parties to develop applications that will work with Samsung products. Widgets for the TV. Neat idea if deployed right.

2:13pm Yahoo! talking now about their vision of TV and Internet integration. Working with Ebay, MySpace, CBS to develop TV widgets for cinematic Internet. Being able to interact with web using only remote control.

2:10pmLaunching Samsung Internet TV, integrated with Samsung products, with collaboration with Yahoo! Good stuff.

2:08pmTalking about unified UI. Good thing they thought about this.

2:05pmSamsung’s approach, they’re calling “Seamless Experience”. Explaining their competitive advantage from other companies doing Seamless Experience.
