Google Hard at Work on Android 2.1

I personally fuck to gaming a school interact ever a movement or digit free of itself. Google is rumored to be in much a position, currently hard at impact at edition 2.1 of its Android ambulatory OS add though edition 2.0 won’t officially be discover until Friday.

It rattling shouldn’t be a assail to likewise some Android fans, considering the brief readying instance between 1.6 and 2.0. It’s achromic to adopt Google would already be hard at impact effort the incoming acquirable edition primed for developers as presently as possible. This noesis to apace update definitely crapper be a clew of a flourishing ambulatory OS with a alluviation of potential.

Here’s how it was discovered: Android and Me’s webmasters were chase the site’s analytics reports and create that 0.04% of its reciprocation was achievement from Android 2.1, instead of some another OS. It seems aforementioned much an unbelievably eventual approach, still it worked kinda well.

android21

There are no reports of some brand-new features in 2.1 as of yet; every that is famous for trusty is that 2.1 module be a alternative update to ameliorate bugs from 2.0 and module be primed by the add of 2009. Still, that’s a kinda alacritous readying instance for an OS to impart every field bugs immobile that soon.

magicJack working with magicFCC and magicCarriers on magicFemtocell

It’s been revealed that perennial SkyMall and late-night TV favorite magicJack has a bunch of new features in the works for its low-cost, USB-bedongled VoIP service including landline number portability and Linux compatibility, but that’s not the real news — what’s got us all worked up is word that they’re allegedly working on a GSM-based femtocell that’ll hook your cellphone into magicJack’s service when it’s in range. Even better, it all fits into a box “just a little bigger” than the current USB stick, which would make it considerably smaller than any femtocell we’ve seen launched so far. We’re not sure whether these guys have bothered consulting with the FCC or carriers on this, but we’ve got dozens of questions:

Are these guys licensing spectrum from the gub’mint, sublicensing it from carriers, or just going rogue?
Are any carriers in on this, and if so, why?
If carriers aren’t involved, why would they establish roaming deals that would allow carrier-branded phones and SIMs to roam on magicJack’s rogue airwaves?
If they’re not working on roaming deals, the femtocells will need to spoof a carrier ID — never mind the fact that TDMA femtocells are virtually impossible to design and install for technical reasons, which means these would have to be 3G. So magicJack’s going to offer a UMTS femtocell?
Do you get to keep your phone number when you roam on the magicFemtocell, and if so, how?

Helluva mess, isn’t it? We’re sure we’ll eventually be able to find out the answers — and a whole lot more for just one low price — in a few months’ time at 2 in the morning on your local Ion affiliate.

HP’s MediaSmart Server ex487 (1.5TB) and ex485 (750GB) both received copious amounts of praise when launched late last year, but considering just how many issues the original two had (the ex470 and ex475), it wouldn’t take much to best ‘em. Today, HP is issuing its second firmware update of the year for the series, but the first ever for the newest duo — and make no mistake, it’s a big one. The v2.5 update adds in loads of new features, far too many to cover in this space, in fact. If you’re interested in hearing more, follow us past the break for all the details.

Moxi’s spring updates brings PlayOn, DLNA and a little home automation

In Digeo’s latest move into the consumer DVR market it is rolling out first big update since the launch only a few months ago. The list of additions is pretty nice, but our most anticipated feature, the Moxi-mate, is still just “coming soon.” Although all the new features are interesting, the most notable is the DLNA certification which allows your Moxi to play all kinds of media from your PC, including from a PlayOn server. What’s even better is that Digeo is actually throwing in the PlayOn software — famous for its Hulu and Netflix support — for free with the update, which $40 normally. The other new Moxi features users will have access to within the next few days is an expansion of Moxi Net outside its walled garden, as well as a few new home automation tricks that’ll let you take advantage of Z-Wave lights and various IP cameras — also configured via Moxi Net. Believe it or not though, there is actually more, but rather than go on and on covering the Flickr improvements and Rhapsody support, we’ll just provide the entire release after the break.

Netgear rolls out 4-bay ReadyNAS NVX

Netgear doesn’t exactly go all out with the styling or blinkin’ lights on its ReadyNAS devices, but that all-business exterior is no doubt just what some folks are looking for, and it doesn’t look like they’ll be disappointed by the company’s latest ReadyNAS NVX model. According to Netgear, this one offers “double the performance” of previous NV models, which is apparently explained in part by the addition of iSCSI support, along with a number of other new features like an improved ReadyNAS “RAIDiator” operating system (fully compatible with Time Machine) and, of course, a whole range of other on-site and off-site backup measures. That won’t exactly come cheap, however, as the base 2TB model starts at a hefty $1,500, with an extra $5.95 to $19.95 a month required for Netgear’s ReadyNAS Vault backup service.

GrandCentral Becomes Google Voice

By Luke Anderson

I don’t know if any of you got on the GrandCentral bandwagon back when they were still handing out numbers, but it’s one of my favorite Google services (next to my Gmail). Basically I have one number that I give out to everyone, I then have it ring both my house phone and my iPhone when someone calls it. If my cell phone or house number changes, I just log into my GrandCentral account and update it, and no one has to memorize a new number for me. If I want someone to stop calling, I just click a little button and when they call, GrandCentral tells them that my number has been disconnected. Pretty sweet, no? The big downside is that Google hasn’t been sending out any invites, and honestly they haven’t made any real changes to it in a very long time, making people wonder if it might get axed. Finally yesterday they announced Google Voice, which is essentially the new face of GrandCentral.

Google Voice doesn’t appear to just be a makeover for the GrandCentral site, new features are being added as well. One of my favorites is the ability to not only have your voicemails transcribed, but they can be forwarded to you via email or SMS. The transcription process is fully automated, which is really handy since there aren’t a lot of good ways to check my voicemails via the iPhone.  Other cool features include the ability to archive and search SMS text messages you have sent and received, as well as integration of the GOOG-411 service.

My account hasn’t been updated yet, but according to the site it should be in just a few days. For those that didn’t get a GrandCentral number when they were available, Google says that they will be sending out invitations to the new Google Voice service soon. You can sign up for an invitation here.
