Samsung TicToc Shakeable MP3 Player

By fear Liszewski

It ostensibly wasn’t essential adequacy to attain the composition listing during Samsung’s CES advise conference, but the TicToc was on designate at their booth and is a adroit determining to Apple’s iPod Shuffle. A built-in change device makes change tracks as cushy as quiver the player, and it’s sharp adequacy to drug up a andante lineage if agitated slowly, or a alacritous digit if agitated vigorously, should you so desire.

On digit add there’s a caretaker ameliorate that’s used to noesis the TicToc on and off, but it’s also used, in organization with gravity, to add the volume. Hold the ameliorate with the contestant face downbound and the intensity module decrease, and evilness versa. To be unstoppered the shitting actually seems aforementioned category of a discompose to use, but I’m trusty it module calibre to the player’s direct demographic which is somewhere in the tweens.

According to reps at their booth, the Samsung TicToc module be acquirable after this assemblage in 2 and 4GB capacities activity MP3, WMA, OGG and FLAC evaluate formats with 12 hours of shelling life. I’m feat to adopt it also comes with the syncing lineage represented above, though the expert impressible sleeves used to attain the player’s inform module be oversubscribed separately.

CUBE B52HD PMP handles codecs galore, HD out for silly cheap

It’s not like we’re ever going to bump into this in our local electronics store, but boy is this CUBE B52HD portable media player tempting. The thing has a 5-inch 480 x 272 LCD, all the codecs we could ask for (including fan faves like FLAC, OGG, along with plenty of video options), 1280 x 720 video out, 8GB of built-in storage and an expansion slot of some sort. We’re not sure about input methods, but hopefully the interface involves Brendan Fraser to some extent. The best news? All this can be theoretically yours for a mere 499 yuan, about $73 US.

Philips GoGear Aria, Opus, ViBE and Mix hands-on, launch info

Philips announced its GoGear Aria and Opus players for Europe back in February, but they’ve finally got around to showing off the units Stateside, along with offering prices, a timeframe, and a bit of company. The 2-inch screened Aria lands this month in 8GB and 16GB versions for $80 and $100, respectively; the 2.8-inch QVGA Opus does 8GB at $100, with a 16GB model in the wings; the teensy new ViBE has a 1.5-inch screen and comes in 4GB and 8GB flavors for $50 and $60; and there’s a new little thumb DAP called the Mix, which is short on details. All the DAPs have FM radio and mics, and all but the Mix can do video. They also include trial subscriptions to and support for Rhapsody and Audible, along with a little browser widget to download YouTube videos and load them to the player — a nice touch. Still, the line is pretty lackluster; we played with the players briefly, and while the design is getting better, there’s still a lot of wasted space, mundane controls and ancient-seeming software — we suppose you get what you pay for. We did appreciate Opus’ inclusion of FLAC and OGG support, and its build quality really puts the rest of the line to shame.

Lenovo MRT800 touchscreen PMP unveiled, pities no fool

On the surface, Lenovo’s MRT800 doesn’t seem to have any surprises, but if you look closer… well, it’s more or less the same. The touchscreen PMP’s got a 4.3-inch TFT LCD with 480 x 272 resolution, a microSD expansion slot, FM tuner, and a voice recorder. Codec support includes RMVB, AVI, ASF, MP4, and FLV for video, and MP3, WMA, OGG, APE, FLAC, and WAV for audio. Mum’s the word on pricing, release date, or if anyone else mispronounces its name and gets the urge to watch A-Team reruns.

Samsung YP-CP3 PMP surfaces, looks promising

We can’t say for sure that Samsung’s YP-CP3 is just a P3 with a pinch more “C,” but there are definitely similarities to be seen. At any rate, the CP3 has just surfaced overseas, and reportedly this one comes packing a 3-inch display (400 x 240 resolution), support for a litany of file formats (MP3, WAV, FLAC, OGG and RM), an FM tuner, microSD expansion slot and a joystick control scheme. Sadly, we’ve no pricing or availability details to share, but we get this strange sensation that Yanks might be waiting awhile. Or forever.

Newman ManMan A1 is way too manly for us

Jan 16th 2009 Portable Audio No Comments

Seriously, you just can’t find a PMP that’s any manlier than this. For starters, the phrase “man” is used three times in the product name (Newman ManMan A1), and secondly, it’s fluorescent pink in color. Clearly, Newman is aiming at those with a soft spot in their hearts for the previous generation iPod nano, and the SmartTouch UI even gives users that CoverFlow feel without all the paperwork involved in buying a legitimate device. On the plus side, this thing can handle the more exotic audio formats like OGG and FLAC, and those repulsed by the pink can opt for a blue version when it hits Chinese street vendors later this month.

LG introduces new UP3 DAP for Korea, now with even more 2006 flavor

Jan 16th 2009 Portable Audio No Comments

LG has been hanging onto the UP3 name for some time now, and it looks like it’s also not about to venture to far afield in the design department, with its latest model sticking disappointingly close to its 2006 counterpart. That sameness also extends to the same basic support for MP3, WMA, and OGG formats, though you can now get the player in new, exciting 2GB and 4GB versions, both of which apparently boast an improved battery life of 15 hours. No word on a price or release ’round these parts, as you might have guessed, but those in Korea can apparently look to get their hands on ‘em shortly, if not already.

[CES 2009] Hands-On With The Samsung MBP200 Pico Projector

Jan 8th 2009 Other Stuff No Comments

Samsung MBP200 Pico Projector (Images property OhGizmo!)
By Andrew Liszewski

While it didn’t come up at the press conference earlier in the day, Samsung was showing off their MBP200 Pico Projector/Portable Media Player at a pre-CES event. I have to admit that the whole pocket-sized projector idea has intrigued me, and after playing with the MBP200, I’m definitely sold. Given the extra hardware on board, the MBP200 is considerably thicker than something like the iPod Touch, or pretty much every PMP currently on the market. But being able to project up to a 50-inch video onto a wall, totally makes up for it.

Besides the standard support for media files such as MP3, WMA, OGG, AAC, WAV, DivX, Xvid, WMV9 Simple Profile, MPEG-2, MPEG-4; Audio CODEC: MP3, AAC and WMA, the MBP200 also supports PDFs, PowerPoint presentations, MS Word docs and Excel files, which means you can justify picking one of these up as a tool for the office. And if you don’t want everyone else in the room seeing or hearing your files, the MBP200 also has a 2.2-inch QVGA LCD display and a 3.5mm headphone jack that can be used in lieu of the built-in speaker. As for availability, “sometime later this year” is the best I could coax out of them.
