Google’s new Gmail mobile web app sports offline message caching, lots of floaty goodness

If you’ve been losing sleep in eager anticipation of the new Gmail for mobile, rest assured that you’ll sleep soundly tonight. With support for both Android phones and iPhone / iPod Touch OS 2.2.1, the gang over at the Google mobile blog are justifiably proud of the new app. Expect nothing less than a more robust cache that utilizes Gears (for Android) and SQLite databases (for iPhones / touches) to allow you to compose messages and access recently read messages without a network connection, an improved look and feel, and the all new “floaty bar” (their name, not ours) that keeps popular menu commands from scrolling off screen, as this bad boy rolls out progressively over the course of the day. Most interestingly, using the new Gmail on your devices doesn’t require any tweaks or installs — it’s utilizing HTML5 (and its offline storage APIs) already present in the browser. Google is just turning on the juice behind the scenes. And for those of you who are resistant to change, fear not — the previous version is still available. Check it out for yourself over at gmail.com, but not before peeping that super-sweet video after the break.

iPhone OS 3.0 beta 2 gets the jailbreak treatment

The jailbreakers have managed to keep their speed record intact. Just one day after Apple releases an update to the iPhone OS 3.0 beta, QuickPwn updates its wares to support the new firmware. According to the related writeup, it should work with all iPhone / iPod touch models. After going through the jailbreaking process, you’ll need to open icy and follow a few more steps to finish the job. As usual, download at your own risk, and for now, crack is for Windows users only.

Update: The Dev Team has chimed in with the usual list of caveats and warnings. If nothing else, you’ve now got tacit verification that this release of QuickPwn isn’t some malicious hack.

Copy and Paste, Others Coming to iPhone 3.0

We can’t say we’re surprised to hear that Kevin Rose, the master of Apple rumors himself, has been flapping his gums about iPhone OS 3.0, due to be unveiled at a press event this Tuesday.

Kevin has chosen to tell a large crowd at SXSW, a very good location to reveal the secrets of 3.0 because of the large congregation of tech geeks (we can say that, since we are tech geeks ourselves) that have flocked to Austin, TX.

So what’s the big secret? He basically confirms all of our hopes and dreams will come true, as copy and paste will finally be a reality on the iPhone. He says the interface is similar to the magnifying glass — use two fingers to select your text and copy away!

That’s not all. Rose also mentioned that these additions will bring the iPhone up to speed with the Palm Pre, though there will be no support for background apps. So what else will there be? We’ve already heard rather good rumors that 3.0 will also have MMS and tethering capabilities.

There’s the news. But let’s hear from you: what else will be added in 3.0? We saw a huge change from OS 1.x to 2.x, so we’re really looking forwarding to seeing another large jump in usability and capability.

Again, file all this in the rumors section until Tuesday. But we cannot WAIT for this to all go down.

Stylish Nokia 5330 XpressMusic slider

Nokia 5330 XpressMusic is another handset launched at Nokia Music event today.

As we told you few hours ago, Nokia 5330 XpressMusic is interesting mostly not for it’s features, but for it’s exterior/design.

Though the feature set is also nothing to sneer about for a handset at this price range.

It has an interesting top sliced design and illumination effects around the keypad to fit your mood and music you are playing.

nokia-5330-1

Nokia 5330 specs include:

  • Quad-band EGSM 850/900/1800/1900, WCDMA 900/1700/2100 connectivity
  • Symbian S40 9.1 OS
  • 2.4” QVGA 16M color display
  • 3.2 megapixel camera LED flash, 15 fps video recording
  • A-GPS
  • microSD memory card slot
  • Dimensions: 101.2 x 48.5 x 14.05 mm
  • Weight: 113 g
  • 1000 mAh battery with up to 7 hrs talk, 398 hrs standby and 24hrs music playback time

Nokia 5330 comes with OVI integration and also the possibility to add icon shortcuts to your favorite social networking services (e.g. Facebook, MySpace, etc;) to the home screen.

The handset is expected to ship in Q3 for a unsubsidized price of EUR 160.

I won’t complain about the camera here. 3.2 megapixels for the device at this price range is quite good. Throw in GPS sensor and pedestrian navigation capabilities, easy access to OVI services, music optimized design, and it looks that Nokia’s got a winner in 5330.

The only thing I feel is missing is high speed HSDPA data connectivity, since the phone only supports WCDMA (up to 384 kbps) downloads.

Here’s a hands-on video of Nokia 5330:

And some official press pics:
