Mobile Connect application for Microsoft Surface

Microsoft has recently unveiled a new application for Microsoft Surface – its multi-touch computing platform currently available only in a commercial and a developer version (priced at $12,500 and $15,000, respectively).

The application is Mobile Connect and it enables you to connect a Windows Mobile handset to a Microsoft Surface unit, in order to interact with data found both on the phone and on the multi-touch platform.

For example, you can easily transfer contacts, ringtones, photos and other types of content.

The application is available at the Surface Community website, but for the moment only Community members can download it.

Anyway, here’s the demo video with the new Microsoft Surface application – I’m sure you’ll find it interesting:

LeapFrog intros “smartphone” for your little one (or you)

LeapFrog’s been very busy of late — they recently added Tag Junior to their line of edutainment products for the wee ones –and now there’s this. The Text and Learn children’s “PDA” hasn’t been officially announced yet, but details are slipping out from the U.K. Toy Fair, so here’s what we know about the must-have device of the year: boasting a full QWERTY keyboard, the Text and Learn has a calendar (for learning dates), phonics functions (for learning… phonics) on the keyboard, and games to teach spelling and basic computer skills, as well. There’s also some “texting” — the child can interact with their onscreen buddy / guide, Scout. The Text and Learn is set to launch in August for about $30. Man — armed with this and our totally sick laptop, we’re going to be the talk of the town.

Asus to make an Eee phone with Android?

The fact that Asus is planning to release at least one Android handset this year is no longer a surprise.

What might be surprising, though, is that the Taiwanese company also wants to come up with a handset under the Eee brand (you know, those small and affordable notebooks).

And to make it all even more interesting, this Eee Phone might be running on – yes – Android.

TechRadar reports that Johnny Shih, Asus’ CEO, talked about the company’s intention to build easy to use pocket-sized devices that:

“play MP3s, offer GPS services, work like a PDA and offer Mobile TV altogether.”

Now, if one of these devices is meant to run on Google’s open source OS and if it’s affordable and good looking, it will almost surely be a success.

Asus has also said it wants to bring Android to its Eee PCs, but I think an Android Eee Phone would be more interesting to see.

We might find out more about all this during CES 2009, so you’d better stick around.

ASUS looking into Android for Eee Phone and Eee PC

There’s not a lot of meat here, but we like where it’s headed: ASUS CEO Johnny Shih talked up the company’s “two-pronged” approach to mobile devices last night, which apparently includes a unit that can be “put in the pocket, play MP3s, offer GPS services, works like a PDA and offers Mobile TV altogether” — with the other prong being the Eee PC, we would guess. When asked about plans to use Android, now that the company is a minted member of the Open Handset Alliance, Shih said that they’re looking into using the OS on the already-hacked Eee PC or the Eee Phone (hopefully both!), and that they’re big iPhone fans — we’ll just let our imaginations run with that one.

[CES 2009] Krown Sign Language Translator

Krown Sign Language Translator (Image property of OhGizmo!)
By Andrew Liszewski

I’m all for gadgets designed to assist those who might be ‘differently abled’ than I am, like this sign language translator from Krown Manufacturing, Inc. It’s basically a touch screen PDA-like device that will translate any word in its 3,500 word vocabulary into sign language, through the use of videos of a guy doing the signing. The vocabulary can be expanded via software updates and the rechargeable battery is good for about 6 hours of use on a single charge. It’s expected to be released in May of this year, and the $199 price tag seems relatively accessible.

However, I have to wonder why the deaf person you’re attempting to speak to in sign language can’t just look over your shoulder while you’re entering the words? Seems to me this device would better find its niche with those attempting to learn sign language.
