Rumor – iTunes Premium Tracks To Go For $1.29 Starting April 7th

itunes-06-2-500x355

By Chris Scott Barr

It’s hard to disagree with anyone that says iTunes forever changed the way we buy music. Their simple $.99 per song pricing made it cheaper than ever to buy just the songs you like. It didn’t matter if the song was brand new or three decades old, $.99 was the price. Unfortunately starting next month that will no longer be the case. If you’re looking for a current chart-topper, expect to pay a premium.

According to sources, Apple has begun telling record labels that on April 7 they will introduce the new $1.29 premium price for popular tracks. This has been discussed off and on for some time, but this is the first we’ve heard of a date for the new pricing.

I won’t pretend to know all of the inner-workings of the record industry, but I’m pretty sure their business model is to bend potential customers over a table and attempt to extract cash rectally. I mean, it’s not like we’re going through a recession or anything. Oh well, looks like we’re just going to have to listen to music the old-fashioned way. Speaking of which, I believe we can look forward to a ruling on the big RIAA vs ThePirateBay case just 10 days after this new pricing scheme goes public.

Boston-Power’s Sonata battery now available for HP laptops

The deal has been done for a while, but today’s the first day that Boston-Power’s much-vaunted Sonata batteries are actually available from HP, where they’re now officially known as the HP Enviro Series batteries. Helping them earn that moniker is a promised “sustainable performance” for a full three years (which HP backs up with a warranty), and a number of other enviro-friendly measures that helped snag the batteries the Nordic Ecolabel certification. Best of all, the batteries are available for no less than 18 different HP laptops right from the get-go and, at $149.99, they don’t demand quite the premium price that you might expect. You can’t yet get them as an option in a new HP laptop, however, but that’s apparently on tap for later this month.

Apricorn rolls out pocketable Aegis Mini 240GB 1.8-inch hard drive

240GB 1.8-inch hard drives have been out and about for a little while now, but they’re still a bit of a rare sight in actual products, which is something the folks at Apricorn look set to rectify with their new Aegis Mini portable hard drive. As you can see above, the whole package isn’t much larger than the hard drive itself and, better still, it’s available in your choice of USB 2.0 or FireWire flavors, which’ll run you the expectedly premium price of $269 and $279, respectively. If that’s a bit more than you need, you can also grab an 80GB or 120GB drive, which also pack the same shock protection and retractable cable as their more capacious counterpart, plus Apricorn’s own Data Protection Suite software.

Netflix considering premium price tiers for additional streaming content?

Look, some people are perfectly content to swap a DVD with Netflix once a millenia and watch Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer in Ladyhawke on their Xbox 360 — other people demand something a bit more “hip” on their Instant Watch queue. Netflix is apparently investigating the possibility of an additional $10 monthly fee to watch HBO shows and movies on the streaming service, or at least has a poll to that effect. For people that keep cable around just for things like HBO and Showtime, it’s an attractive proposition, and perhaps a bit of an inevitability, but at $10 a month we’d expect Netflix to toss in a bit more premium content than just what one channel has to offer. What’s clear is that either way, people are going to find a way to watch this stuff online, and the first provider to figure out the right way to monetize and distribute it wins. This seems like a tentative step in the right direction, if it comes to pass.

White Pentax K2000 now available for pre-order

Pentax’s convention-defying white and black K2000 DSLR may not be for everybody, but those wanting to stand out in a crowd of shutterbugs will no doubt be pleased to learn that the camera (complete with both 18-55mm and 50-200mm lenses) is now available for pre-order direct from Pentax. Best of all, it’s available for the decidedly non-premium price of $679.95, which is actually a bit less than we were expecting when it was first announced. You’ll still have to wait until mid-February for it to actually ship, however, but that should at least give you enough time to get the rest of your gadgets Colorware’d to match. Latest CE Pro Magazine reveals the ZeeVee ZvPro

ZvPro add in CE Pro
Well looky here, the wonders that is print media isn’t useless just yet — thanks to very long lead times and an ambitious postal worker, the latest edition of CE Pro Magazine reveals the evidently soon to be announced ZvPro. The ad doesn’t offer up enough details for us, but it does look like some of our biggest gripes about the original ZeVee Box are addressed. For example, now we have component and Toslink input as well as RS-232 control and an IR port — no indication if that is an input or an output. The rack mountable device is obviously geared towards the prosumer so it isn’t too much of a stretch to assume this little baby will demand a premium price — if we were the betting type, we’d have our money on over $800. But even at that price, we’re sure this box will find at least a few homes as there are plenty of people trying to figure out how to send HD over the existing coax in their home without mounting a STB on the wall below the HDTV.

[Thanks, Utah]

iRex Digital Reader 1000S gets the hands on treatment

iRex’s Digital Reader 1000S didn’t exactly do a whole lot to distinguish itself when it debuted alongside its two other 1000 series counterparts a few months back but, judging from Engadget Chinese’s hands-on of the unit, it seems to at least hold its own against your average e-book reader, even if it may not be able to justify its premium price tag ($749). On the upside the 10.2-inch, 160 dpi display appears to deliver as expected, with it provided a fairly comfortable reading experience, although some small text may have you reaching for the zoom function. Unfortunately, the device as a whole seems to be a tad on the sluggish side, and there is that small matter of the price, which puts the iRex well above the likes of the Kindle and some other upstart e-book readers. Still undecided? Hit up the link below for a closer look.

Parrot intros Philippe Starck-designed Zimku wireless speakers

We’re not sure if he’s been taking notes from fellow countryman Jean-Michel Jarre or not, but it looks like prolific designer Philippe Starck now has a tower-style speaker system to call his own. Considering that Starck has paired up with the wireless-minded folks at Parrot, however, there’s a few more surprises in store with these — namely, built-in WiFi and Bluetooth to accommodate your laptop or cellphone of choice. You will still get an iPod / iPhone dock, of course, along with a remote control (also designed by Starck), and some newfangled NXT technology that apparently “revolutionizes traditional acoustic design.” All that comes at an expectedly premium price, however, with the speakers set to run $1,500 when they’re released sometime in the spring.
