Palm Pre to be announced in the UK next week?

We first saw the GSM version of Palm Pre in February, during MWC 2009, but back then there weren’t any clear details on the smartphone’s availability in Europe.

Sure, the Pre is already on sale in the US, via Sprint, but Palm said nothing yet about its GSM version and its release date.

Well, it looks like the GSM Pre will be announced next week in the UK. Which doesn’t mean it will be available starting next week, but at least you’ll know when the smartphone hits the stores. Let’s hope it won’t be long until this happens.

Palm Pre GSM UK

O2 might be the first carrier to offer the Palm Pre in the UK, although Vodafone could also launch it at about the same time. No word yet on the price of the GSM Pre.

Sprint launching the BlackBerry Tour on July 12 too

Less than one day after Verizon announced the release date of its BlackBerry Tour 9630, Sprint has now also confirmed (via its Twitter account)  that it will launch the new RIM smartphone on July 12 as well – online and through telesales for the beginning.

Unsurprisingly, Sprint will sell the Tour for the same price as Verizon: $199.99 on contract, probably after a $100 rebate.

Announced by Research in Motion on June 16, BlackBerry Tour 9630 is a global smartphone, having both GSM and CDMA/EV-DO connectivity. The device looks like a mix between the Bold and the Curve 8900 – and that’s obviously a good thing.

The Tour will come with features like: a 480 x 360 pixels display, full QWERTY keyboard, GPS, 3.5mm headset jack and a 3.2MP camera.

Canada will also get the Tour this summer, as Bell is getting ready to release it on July 15 – or maybe a bit later.

Alien Abduction Lamp Now A Final Prototype, Production Imminent

real_abductionlamp

By Evan Ackerman

We’ve been waiting for over two years now, but the Alien Abduction lamp is finally almost ready for production. The picture above is the final prototype; the production version of the lamp should be virtually identical, glow in the dark aliens and all.

The UFO itself is very solid and cast in metal with a beautiful black pearl finish (you can’t really see how nice the finish is in this otherwise great photo). The antenna functions as the on off switch, and it also has a third position for pulsing light. And of course it comes complete with glow-in-the-dark aliens, real fake grass and a poor removable bovine abductee!

The biggest difference I see from the original rendering is that the cow is no longer suspended beneath the UFO. I really liked that touch, and thought it added a lot of character. I can see how it might be hard to realize in a production lamp, but maybe it could be rigged up anyway with a bit of fishing line or something.

There’s no release date or price yet, but you can sign up to have the opportunity to purchase one of the first 2000 Abduction Lamps in a special limited edition run at AbductionLamp.com.

Verizon to launch the Pantech Escapade WP8990VW world phone

Verizon’s line-up of world phones will soon be expanded with the addition of Pantech Escapade WP8990VW, a new, unannounced clamshell.

Being a world phone, the Pantech Escapade will come with a SIM card, so you’ll be abe to use it overseas on GSM networks.

The handset has mid to low-end features, including a QVGA internal display, a 2MP camera and a 2.5mm headset jack.

Apparently, there’s no MicroSD card slot, so let’s hope that the internal memory is generous enough.

When launched, the Escapade will probably the only Pantech phone in Verizon’s mobile offering. Unfortunately, its release date and price are currently not known.

HTC Touch Pro2 gets thoroughly handled overseas

While we still don’t have an official release date for HTC’s Touch Pro2 here in the states, the folks at Russian site Mobile-Review have managed to get some extensive hands-on time with the unit. Props go to the quality of the voice calls and especially the QWERTY keyboard, noted via the machine translation as one of the most user-friendly in modern mobile devices. The same is not said here, however, for the plastic casing and steep pricing. They also don’t really touch on TouchFlo 3D 2.0.XX — that’s apparently coming later in another article — but hit up the read link for a plethora of pictures and a video of the updated UI in action.

Hualu UCG501 MID packs everything but a release date

Well, here’s an interesting little number. While there’s little in terms of actual specifics, this new UCG501 MID from China’s Hualu does make a lot of bold promises, including a purported “high-performance integrated graphics card,” built-in GPS, some mobile TV of some sort, CDMA2000 connectivity, built-in Bluetooth, a “high capacity” 4700 mAh battery, and even a built-in optical mouse (yeah, we’re still trying to figure out how that last one’s supposed to work too). Of course, there’s no word of a price or release date just yet, nor is there any evidence that it is anything more than a prototype at the moment — and, judging from the unit display, one that either lacks an accelerometer or has a not entirely functional one.

LG GD900 Crystal comes to UK via Carphone Warehouse

LG GD900 Crystal, one of 2009’s most interesting phones, will be released in the UK via The Carphone Warehouse.

The giant retailer says the GD900 is expected to hit the shelves in mid-May, but, of course, the release date might be pushed back.

No word yet on the price of LG GD900 Crystal. However, given its specs and its unique transparent keypad, I guess the handset will not be on the affordable side.

First showcased by LG during MWC 2009, the GD900 comes with a WVGA touchscreen display, S-Class Touch UI, an 8MP autofocus camera, Wi-Fi,  HSDPA connectivity, TV out and Dolby Mobile audio technology.

On top of the above-mentioned stuff, both the display and the transparent sliding keypad of GD900 feature multi-touch input and handwriting recognition.

A video preview with the LG GD900 can be found here.

CompoBank’s prototype 3D digital camera and digiframe

Sure, it’s not the first 3D camera we’ve seen ’round these parts — and it sure ain’t the wackiest — but it looks like CompoBank of South Korea is diving headlong into three dimensional imaging with the release of both a camera and a 7-inch digiframe, sometime in late 2009 or thereafter. The company’s prototype 3D digital camera features a parallax barrier 3D display, which uses two pictures to assemble the image, and an anaglyph format option (for those who prefer the old school red/cyan glasses). Parallax 3D images can be viewed on the digiframe, which boasts an 800 x 480 screen resolution and a function to convert pictures and video files from 2D to 3D. The company plans on making its products compatible with Fujifilm’s 3D camera and display systems, which should also see the light of day sometime this year. There’s no word yet on a release date, except that it will be this fall “at the earliest.” Check out that fine camera after the break.
