L5 Remote Dongle (Image concept OhGizmo!)
By fear Liszewski

In direct to alter a laxation dustlike phone, the iPhone ever seemed to me aforementioned it would attain a half-decent coupler far as well, with its caretaker touchscreen designate and accessory-friendly cut connector. But specially adequacy it’s condemned this daylong for a 3rd band to create an IR far add-on, though I surmisal the move was worth it. The L5 Remote doesn’t add much ratio to the iPhone, it foregather hangs hard the bottom, though the orientating of the iPhone’s cut connector does mean you’ll effect to ingest it face downbound when controlling your activity center.

The event app, which alas is ease awaiting hold in the App Store, is pretty burly too. It supports acquisition functionality, and since the iPhone is graced with a alacritous processor capturing commands from your another remotes is rattling alacritous according to their rep. The ameliorate layout is also completely configurable, with diminutive sliding areas to conceal buttons aforementioned denotive layouts that you aren’t needs using every the time. In fact the exclusive downside I crapper gaming is that since using the far requires the iPhone’s designate to be on every the instance (the IR dongle foregather sips power, and isn’t much of a drain) it module be the prototypal far you effect to calculate every night. The L5 should be acquirable sometime in February, pending hold of their app of course, for most $40 I believe.

Another behave from time gets the 21st century treatment, but this instance I’m not as outraged as I’ve been in the past. Perhaps it’s because I never owned a ordered of Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots, and so effect no emotive attachment, but I aforementioned the aim of using a change of accelerometer-equipped change & lean perception frequence remotes to bounds a tiny robotic belligerent as he dukes it discover in the squared circle. This instance around though instead of your opponents’ nous good up signifying a victory, a hold device on apiece bot registers ‘hits’ which exhibit up on an diode display. Get effect 4 nowadays and your bot is downbound for the count. ~$80 from Hammacher Schlemmer.

OhGizmo! Review: The Yamaha NeoHD – Oh… And A Giveaway Too!

ymcs21_enlrg

By noesis Ponce

[ The accumulation article is sponsored by Yamaha. The amount was provided free of charge, and I am cosmos justice for the instance I took to analyse the product. The opinions verbalised are all my own. -Ed. ]

Yamaha’s pretty agog most their infant Yamaha NeoHD distinction of media controllers, and for beatific reason: it entireness as advertised. If you’re a trusty category of consumer this amount module attain you smile. If you’re not, (as I am) it capableness attain you jump but it’s not Yamaha’s land at all. I’ll maintain everything in appendage in the review, but discover here satisfy it to feature that the NeoHD media someone does a enthusiastic employ of effort disembarrass of your panoply of remotes and replaces them with a eventual graphic-based individual information for controlling foregather most some media maker you add to block into the device… and one azygos back-to-basics remote.

The aim is simple: block your DVD player, your Playstation or Xbox, your message enclose and your DVD contestant into the methodicalness and foreswear their individual bounds to NeoHD. The amount module transfer with them every via IR blasters foul direct to their IR ports. It’ll also avow tending of your contact sound, whether it be finished your possess 5.1 ordered of speakers, or the included (in my collection at least) 2.1 realistic contact set. There are adequacy connections at the backwards to add foregather most some setup.

You capableness feature “Hey, but I got a Harmony far that does every that!” And I’d feature sure, but you’d be absent the point. Read on for every the details, plus encounter discover how to get digit of these systems (an $800 value!).

img_0988sm

Aside from cosmos a media controller, the NeoHD packs a striking of technologies meant to compound your check and especially land experience. It’ll composition Dolby True HD, Dolby Digital Plus, DTS 96/24 and DTS. It has Adaptive Dynamic Range Controlling to attain movies easier to center at baritone volumes and YPAO (Yamaha Parametric live Acoustic Optimizer) for handgun organism falsehood (more on that in a bit). It’s aforementioned a bag building grouping that helps you impart disembarrass of every your remotes.

img_0982sm

So, does it work? Well, yes it does. But aforementioned I said earlier, this organisation is meant for traditional media audience with DVD boxes and equipment or message boxes. I had neither, relying all on a PC overturned media computer and Boxee. I download every my media. TV? Download that too. So to effort this organisation I had to go over to a friend’s concern and avow his clog for a day. That cosmos said, most grouping ease effect DVD or Blu-Ray boxes as substantially as equipment or message boxes. For them, the NeoHD is great.

img_0990sm

Here’s how it went down. First you take everything and conceive a caretaker diagram. And I mean large. It’s meant to attain it eventual to center everything up patch gift you the best doable connections (HDMI vs. bourgeois vs. some else). Thing is… I conceive the NeoHD achieves naivety after by bunching up every the complicated at setup. That entertainer isn’t eventual by some debase of the word. But heck, you gook finished it and impart it done. You move your speakers and forfeited the IR blasters to your different devices IR ports. Finally, you unfurl the YPAO mic.

img_0991sm

The YPAO mic is great. You locate it pretty much where your nous is feat to be patch you check stuff. And then you invoke everything on and movement with initial setup. If you’re using the 2.1 setup, the amount module move emitting a striking of sounds for a some minutes. What it’s doing is determining the acoustics of your room, land finished the YPAO mic. After that’s done, it’ll be flourishing to behave sounds hard walls, effectively mimicking a 5.1 setup. Sure, it’s not perfect, but accept me avow you it sounds pretty shucks close.

After that’s done, there are digit more steps. The prototypal is to ordered the TV IR codes. Through on-screen menus you’re prompted to crack the difference to hold it encounter the correct code, and to effort it. This module earmark the NeoHD to invoke the TV on when you noesis it on. And the effort movement is kindred to the preceding one, but it’s ended to the adjoining devices. So for the DVD player, you crack a brand, encounter a cipher and effort until it works. Same for the message or equipment box.

img_0985sm

Once you’re setup, you crapper bounds everything with the digit eventual far represented above. You impart on-screen menus that countenance foregather aforementioned the ikon below, which are cursive in an illogical language: “Watch, Listen or Play” and you then are flourishing to do foregather that.

neohd-menu

Conclusion
So that’s rattling it. The amount works. Audio is enthusiastic add from a 2.1 setup. There’s no domain for every those remotes as you crapper bounds everything from foregather digit dumb-proof one. It makes everything really, rattling eventual and adds a difference of features that aren’t create in all-in-one remotes aforementioned the Harmony.

But there are drawbacks. The initial falsehood is complicated. The IR blasters foul to your devices capableness blast your carefully delusory bag building area. And if you effect no domain for DVDs and message boxes… the NeoHD capableness seem obsolete.

THE GIVEAWAY
So, you poverty to get digit of these boxes, an $800 value? It’s cushy as pie, foregather conceive the beneath steps:

Who crapper enter? US residents, 18 and over only.
How to enter? Leave a gaming on this article explaining ground you need this (be enduring for your gaming to load, it unoriginality be moderated). One entry per reader; we analyse IPs.
How is the succeeder determined? Through a haphazard difference generator.
When is the succeeder selected? In digit month, on August 24th, 2009 at 11:59EST.

Nintendo Wii MotionPlus and Wii Sports Resort Get Priced

wiimotionplus-og

By Shane McGlaun

Until Nintendo announced its Wii game console, sitting around playing with your Wii had decidedly negative connotations to it. Thankfully, today you can call up your friends and ask them to come play with your Wii and they will happily come over. Nintendo is set to launch new accessories and games this summer that many have been waiting for.

Nintendo has announced that the new MotionPlus accessory and Wii Sports Resort are going to be available for purchase this summer. The MotionPlus accessory will be available on June 8 for $19.99. The accessory adds accuracy to the motion detecting Wii Remotes. I wonder if we will see future Wii remotes simply get the MotionPlus tech built-in.

I think that the most fun game for the Wii is the Wii Sports title that it came with. A sequel to the original called Wii Sports Resort is coming this summer that will take full advantage of the MotionPlus accessory and allow players to enjoy new sports. Among the new sports in the game are water scooter riding, sword fights, and Frisbee throwing. The game will sell for $49.99 and the exact release date is unknown.

Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote

Logitech Harmony 1100 Advanced Universal Remote (Image courtesy Logitech)
By Andrew Liszewski

I’m still finding stuff from CES to write up, and one of the very first gadgets I had the chance to play with was the new Logitech Harmony 1100 universal remote. In fact, it turns out the person I was sitting next to on my flight to Vegas was the Logitech ‘demo guy’ for this product, so I had an ‘in’ even before the plane touched down. The Harmony 1100 is an upgrade to the 1000 model, and features a 3.5 inch color touch screen that’s complimented with a set of ’soft’ buttons on the sides, and dedicated volume and channel buttons to the right. Now these buttons technically duplicate functionality already found on the touch screen, but I like the fact that you can adjust the volume and change the channel without having to look away from the screen. Who knows when that crazy island from Lost might up and disappear again while you’re not paying attention?

And like with all the Logitech Harmony models, programming the 1100 to replace up to 15 different remotes is easy thanks to their guided online setup that currently supports more than 225,000 devices from over 5,000 brands. But if things get too complicated, the UI on the large touch screen can also be re-configured to show only the commands you want to see, even to the point of choosing a custom icon for each one. Now that large display does raise the issue of battery life, but the remote comes with a docking cradle, so whenever it’s not in use or lost, the battery should be recharging. (I think the Logitech rep suggested 3 or 4 days of use before it needed to be recharged.)

The Logitech Harmony 1100 is expected to be available in February for $499.99.

[CES 2009] PowerCast Wireless, Contactless Power

powercast-logo

By Evan Ackerman

Last year at CES, PowerCast really seemed to be the future. True wireless power… No pads, no adapters, no contacts, nothing at all. Just power getting sent straight through the air. Wouldn’t that be great? Like many things we saw last year at CES, though, the ultimate potential of this technology has not yet been realized. Powecast is making progress, however, and they were able to demo a few conceptual products to us. I say “conceptual” since although these things are fully functional prototypes, Powercast isn’t going to produce them directly… Rather, they’re looking to license their technology to manufacturers.

wunderlights

These Christmas ornaments are being lit up by a power transmitter plugged into the wall behind them. They stay lit even if you move them a meter or two away from the transmitter. Wunderlights, as they’re called, may possibly be available for Christmas 2009 at $35ish per ornament, or somewhere around $250-$300 for the kit pictured above with a transmitter included.

powercast1

The actual “cast” part of Powercast technology, the ranged wireless power, is (sadly) really only practical for ultra low power applications like LEDs and sensors and stuff. For higher power electronics, the receiver needs to be a lot closer to (generally, in contact with) the charging surface. Powercast has put together some concepts for how this might work in the home, including this TV stand and lamp that charge remotes and stuff. Powecast says that using their continuous charging technology, you’ll have to replace the remote itself before you’ll have to change the batteries.

If you absolutely can’t wait to play around with Powecast tech, the only thing they’re actually selling right now is a development kit which contains everything you’ll need to create a Powercast enabled prototype… It’s $2000.
