While Fisker Automotive isn’t making too much of a stir at the New York Auto Show this week, it is scheming to deliver a vehicle that will purportedly compete with Chevrolet’s Volt and Tesla’s Model S. ‘Course, it should probably look to get its Karma onto US streets before it starts looking too far ahead, but you won’t find us kvetching about the promise of a lower cost plug-in hybrid. Company spokesman Russell Datz insinuated that the outfit was jonesing to release a model that would be priced somewhere below its Karma ($87,900) and above the Volt (around $40,000) and Model S (somewhere in the $50,000s), though it wasn’t close enough to production to hit the show floor of any expos in 2009. Oh, what a tease.

Slowly but surely, Cowon has been issuing firmware updates to make its sleek S9 PMP the music player it ought to be. According to a recent leak of the v2.10 beta, it’s about to become even more formidable a rival. Reportedly, the forthcoming update — which can be downloaded now for those kosher with all things beta — adds in support for widgets, WMV7/8, pitch correction, full screen mode in TV-out and color tags for subtitles. As for improved functionality, we’re heard that the entire navigation process has been smoothed over, particularly in the area of browser scrolling. Check the read link for a download URL as well as the full changelog, and if that lucky individual that won our S9 giveaway doesn’t give this a go and report back, you all have to right to throw stones until he / she does.

With a new and improved Star Trek film just around the corner, we all better brace ourselves for an onslaught of movie merchandise that will probably rival the efforts of the Lucas camp. Like a Star Trek themed version of 20 Questions for example. Besides being shaped like the classic Enterprise, making it completely pocket-unfriendly, this edition of 20 Questions is chock full of trivia from the Star Trek movies, television series and characters. So with just 20 questions you’ll be amazed as the game manages to quess that you still have a creepy obsession with Seven of Nine.

20 Questions Star Trek Edition will be available from Entertainment Earth sometime in March for about $21.

We heard that T-Mobile USA was looking to dabble in the low-end arena with $50 unlimited voice plans, and sure enough, the carrier has gone live with ‘em in the City by the Bay. In a surprise move aimed to rival similar plans from lesser known providers such as Boost Mobile, T-Mob is offering “loyal customers” the option to move to a $50 flat-rate calling plan. In order to get the offer, you must be located in San Francisco (for now, anyway), have been a subscriber in good standing for at least 22 months and want to save a few bucks on your mobile calling. It’s stated that stores in the SF area are actively promoting the new plan, which should be fairly successful given that users won’t have to extend their current contracts in order to switch. Toss in unlimited texting, data and Everlasting Gobstoppers, and we’re sold.

Proving (as usual) that it’s not too big for a little tit-for-tat with its crosstown rival, LG showed its own concept solar phone at MWC this week to match up with Samsung’s Blue Earth. The prototype LG handset doesn’t have a name — takes a whole team of high-priced consultants to christen a product like that, we’d wager — but we do know that the slider can eke 3 minutes’ worth of life out of a 10-minute charge in natural light. The thing looks like it was thrown together in a week, but hey, as long as it works, we know LG can take care of the design side of things by the time production rolls around.

Tesla just dropped word yesterday that a drivable prototype of its Model S sedan would be unveiled on March 26th, but the automaker has now gone one step further and let loose the first official teaser image of what we can only assume is said prototype. In true teaser fashion, there isn’t a whole lot to see, but as AutoblogGreen points out, it is fairly evident that the Model S is at least shorter than the rival Fisker Karma, and it seems to boast a larger passenger compartment to boot. Hit up the link below to check out a higher res shot, and don’t be surprised if Tesla continues to tease this one out right up until that March 26th launch date.

While Telstra’s busy bragging about Android sets from HTC that don’t yet exist, Australian rival Optus is making stuff happen. How? Easy: T-Mobile’s G1 is being repurposed as the HTC Dream down here — one of the phone’s rumored names prior to its original release, you might recall — featuring 2100MHz HSDPA, WiFi, and everything else you’ve come to know and love / hate about the world’s first retail Android device. It’ll launch February 16 on plans starting at $59 Australian (about $38) per month, so it’ll be pretty accessible. Sure, Telstra, you may have some awesome devices in the pipeline, but a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush, if you know what we’re saying.
