Slimmer Acer Aspire One pops up in the FCC

We’re not sure what Acer is up to lately, but this is the second slightly-revised Aspire One we’ve seen in the past few days — it looks like that rumored slimmer model with the weird hinge VGA and Ethernet ports is in fact real and headed for our fair shores. No hard specs on this mysterious stranger just yet except for the presence of the 3G SIM slot, but the model number Z68 AO530 strongly suggests that there’s an Atom Z530 lurking in there instead of the usual N270. We’ll let you know if we find out anything else — hit the read link for some more pics and oodles of FCC test data.

Kindle 2 dissected, found to contain space for a SIM card

The Kindle 2’s only been in our hot little hands for a few hours, but the screwdriver-happy scamps at iFixit couldn’t resist — they’ve already ripped theirs into its many component pieces. Interestingly, the teardown revealed an empty space for a SIM card slot, which might indicate Amazon’s got firmer plans for the Kindle’s international debut than they were willing to talk about at the launch. Don’t get too excited for any VAIO P-style SIM-slot hacks, though, since the US edition of the reader only has a CDMA radio for Whispernet in it. Oh well, it’s gotta happen sometime — for now we’re off to find a screen protector, since the teardown also revealed that the E-Ink screen doesn’t have anything over it at all.

Sony’s US VAIO P ripped open in search of SIM slot

So, does the VAIO P have a SIM card slot? That’s the question that the X-ACTO knife wielding crew over at Pocketables sought to answer in their most recent tear down, and the answer is, well… both yes and no (but mainly no). For those unaware, the US version of Sony’s flashiest netbook reserves its WWAN for Verizon Wireless, but many have wondered whether a SIM card slot was conspicuously included. Even after ripping out a plastic blockade, it was found that the so-called SIM slot was actually not made for SIM cards, thus crushing any hopes of retroactively hooking one’s machine up with AT&T / T-Mobile 3G on-the-go. Hit up the read link for some pretty brutal images of the detective work.
