Vertu, Nokia’s luxury handset subsidiary, doesn’t seem to care about the economic downturn around the world and it keeps on launching uber-expensive mobile phones.

Its latest collection is called Vertu Constellation Pure and it includes handsets in four color versions: Pure White, Pure Black, Pure Silver and Pure Chocolate. Only 2,500 units of each color will be manufactured.

The phones are built from steel, leather and ceramics – actually, the whole keypad and the earpiece is made out of ceramic materials. It’s said that Vertu’s designers spent two years in order to create the perfectly-colored ceramic. 

The handsets’ features were not unveiled, but they’re probably similar to the ones found in the older Vertu Constellation phones, thus including quad-band GSM connectivity, Bluetooth and MMS.

The Constellation Pure collection is not yet featured on Vertu’s official website, but it will probably appear there in the next few days. Until then, you can ask yourself if €6,800 (around $8,560) is a good price for a Vertu Constellation Pure phone – because that’s how much one unit will cost.

The White and Black versions of Vertu Constellation Pure will be on sale starting March 1, while the Silver and Chocolate ones should be available in September.

We’re not too sure what’s up with New England-based institutions and inspiration from the depths, but the two seem to have some kind of intrinsic connection. The latest company to prove such a wacky assertion true is Boston’s own Scallop Imaging, a Tenebraex subsidiary that has developed a “low-cost” security camera that sees 180 degrees of view without fisheye distortion or the lag present in pan-and-tilt alternatives. Additionally, the multi-eyed cam automatically stitches and downsamples images, and can capture a new 7-megapixel still to transmit over Ethernet “every second or two.” It’s small enough to be placed into a light socket-sized hole, and it’s powered by the same Ethernet cable that links it into a building’s surveillance system. Of course, the fun won’t stop there, as the outfit is already looking at automotive applications of the Digital Window, including “distortion-free backup cameras for the rear ends” of vehicles.

As the NFL gobbles up even more market share in the United States, it follows logic to see the next big in-home entertainment push side with it in order to garner attention. With every company and its third subsidiary twice removed trying to shove 3D into the home, we’d say starting with the NFL is a brilliant move. In a closed-to-the-public “proof of concept” demonstration, next week’s matchup between the San Diego Chargers and the Oakland Raiders will air live in 3D to select theaters in Los Angeles, New York and Boston. Third-dimension mainstays 3ality Digital and RealD will play critical roles in the delivery, though it remains unclear what exactly the NFL and 3D backers in general plan to do afterwards. If you’ll recall, this isn’t the first pro sporting event this year that was beamed in 3D to nearby theaters, but we can’t think of anything more appealing than 300-pound gentleman crushing each other just inches from your retinas.
