Today, AT&T announced that AT&T Navigator, its own turn-by-turn GPS navigation service, is available for iPhone 3G and iPhone 3G S users, via Apple’s App Store.

Created for iPhone OS 3.0, the AT&T Navigator app provides “full audible and visual turn-by-turn navigation service” via the carrier’s network.

The Navigator app further provides features like: 3D maps, map updates, ETA updates, real-time traffic alerts, one-touch rerouting, speech recognition, daily gas prices, and more than 10 million business listings.

The AT&T Navigator app is available via iTunes for the price of $9.99 per month. Apart from being compatible with the iPhone, the application can also be used on the iPod touch.

Live traffic services have been available on a variety of different portable navigation devices for a while. Using these services drivers can find where traffic jams are happening and get alternate routes to avoid the jams.

Tele Atlas has announced its new HD Traffic service that uses new methods of gathering real time traffic information for subscribers. Traffic data provided by the service uses information from GPS measurements submitted anonymously from other user’s navigation devices and mobile phones, road sensors, and journalistic data.

All of the traffic information is then combined and offered to the driver on their PND allowing them to be routed around traffic automatically. The way traffic data is collected makes for extremely accurate positioning of traffic jam info. Traffic info provided included road speed, length, and location. The HD Traffic service is available now for Tele Atlas partners.

It’s been a while since we heard anything from Sanyo on the Gorilla tip, but according to the company the venerable PND will see three new models hit the scene on April 24. These bad boys will feature two gyro (velocity) sensors and an acceleration sensor, allowing the device to keep an accurate account of your location — even when GPS reception poor. If that isn’t enough for you, the new Gorillas sport an 8GB SSD (twice that of their predecessors) and an optional rear view camera for your vehicle. Prices have yet to be set in stone, but it’s believed that the NV-SD730DT, featuring a 7-inch LCD display will fetch ¥90,000 ($899), while the NV-SB540DT (5.2-inch display, plus tuner for real-time traffic updates) and NV-SB530DT (the 5.2-inch model, sans tuner) will run for ¥70,000 ($700) and ¥65,000 ($650) respectively. No word yet on a Stateside release.

TomTom decided to bust out a pair of announcements this morning, so we won’t waste any time getting right to the crux of it. That splendiferous GO 740 LIVE, which was introduced at CES this January, is finally shipping in the US of A. If you’ll recall, this is TomTom’s first connected navigation system, which can download real-time traffic information, fuel prices, weather reports, etc. If you’re intrigued, you can snag one now with three months of LIVE Services for $399.95. Moving on, we’ve got four new systems entirely: the ONE 140 / ONE 140s (3.5-inch display; 140S announces spoken street and place names) and the XL 340 / XL 340s (4.3-inch display; 340S includes speech functions). Each of these include the company’s IQ Routes technology and Advanced Lane Guidance, features that were previously reserved for higher-end PNDs; furthermore, the new crew also includes maps of Mexico. Catch ‘em all this month for $179.95, $199.95, $229.95 and $249.95 in order of mention.

In an effort to make sure you’re well aware that the 8100T is the most premium possible, even better than ultra- or mega-premium, Navigon has definitively described the aforesaid navigator as “uber-premium.” So, now that the bar is set at an unbelievably high level, how’s about an outlay of the sure-to-be-phenomenal specs? We’re talking a 4.8-inch display, brushed-metal housing, a 3D view using NASA terrain height data, free real-time traffic updates for life, voice destination entry, Bluetooth handsfree support, text-to-speech and an inbuilt lane assistant. The only question left is simply this: is all of that uber enough to warrant the $599 price tag?
