Leica special edition white M8 spotted at car show in Tokyo

Some keen-eyed fellows at the Audi Forum Tokyo car show were just hanging out, checking out an R8, when bam! The recently announced special edition white Leica M8 appeared out of thin air, ready to impress. We don’t know what the circumstances were, or how the cam came to be there, but it’s looking really fly, we can tell you that much. There’s still no official word on pricing or availability, but rumor has it that it’s going to appear sometime in May and might cost around €7,000 (about $9,150). One more shot after the break.

The Kisai Denshoku From Tokyo Flash

Kisai Denshoku (Image courtesy DVICE)
By Andrew Liszewski

It’s been a while since we’ve seen anything new from Tokyo Flash, but I guess if any company would have trouble keeping track of the time, it would be them. Like their past efforts, the Kisai Denshoku gets high regards for style and design, but not so much when it comes to usability. The watch’s face is made up of 12 orange acrylic bars that light up like a graphic EQ, but interpreting the time takes a little know-how.

Pressing the button on the side of the watch causes the bars to light up 3 times, first indicating the hours (3 lit bars = 3 o’clock) then groups of ten minutes and finally single minutes. As is usually the case, there’s a bit of counting involved, but if you’re OK with that you can order the Kisai Denshoku in a black or silver finish from Tokyo Flash for $239.

Game Boy iPhone case instantly becomes best of all time

Sadly, there’s a good chance you already own an iPhone 3G case if you’re the proud owner of an iPhone 3G. That said, there’s still nothing stopping you from hopping a flight to Tokyo and replacing your current one with the best case in the history of cases. Sadly, the lad that snapped this shot isn’t sure where exactly this thing is sold, but if you’re savvy on the details, be sure to holler in comments below.

Olympus plans 50 year anniversary party for diminutive Pen camera

Aw, how cute. 50 years ago, Olympus set the 35mm film camera market on its head with the remarkably small “Pen” line. These half-frame cameras were thought to be as portable as ink pens back in the day, thus earning them the name. Production ceased sometime in the 80s (that whole decade is really just a haze), but that’s not stopping the prideful historians at the company from throwing a 50 year anniversary bash over in Tokyo. Starting on April 6th and running through June 30th, the golden gala will feature numerous old Pen models as well as mysterious “prototypes” that we can only hope will hit the market in the near future. So, after you wipe the tears from your eyes, care to tell us if you’re going?

J-ware odor-free underwear could hit Targets, midsections soon

Truthfully, there’s just not enough work being done in the area of advanced underpants, so we’re absolutely elated to hear that textile experts at Japan Women’s University in Tokyo are picking up the slack and moving forward with an amazing development. Koichi Wakata, the first Japanese astronaut to live on the International Space Station, is current testing the “odor-free” clothing, and it’s said that he can rock the same drawls without any pungent smells for a solid week. The garb is designed to “kill bacteria, absorb water, insulate the body and dry quickly,” and as if that wasn’t awesome enough, they’re also flame-resistant and anti-static. The best news? There are already talks of bringing this stuff to the commercial realm. Don’t deny it — you’re already thinking of how stellar it’d be to wash clothes just once per month.

Credit card style Bluetooth device isn’t likely to increase your wealth, coolness

We’ve seen some ultra-thin MP3 players, even ones that were credit-card sized, but this newest one actually maraudes as a credit card, numbers and all! There’s perilously little information available about the device, but we can tell you this: you’ll look and feel awesome sporting it, should you ever be able to get your hands on one; which we doubt. Price and availability are a mystery to us all.

Update: As pointed out by several of our astute commenters, this appears to be a Tokyo Flash concept for a Bluetooth adapter modeled on a previous credit card styled MP3 player.

OE-A shows off nonvolatile RAM, RFID tag formed by printing

While it’s far from being noteworthy to the mainstream public, printable electronics hold a lot of promise. Over at Printable Electronics 2009 in Tokyo, the Organic Electronics Association (OE-A) demonstrated some of the most extreme, useful printings that we’ve seen to date. By utilizing an eclectic array of printing methods, the agency was able to produce nonvolatile RAM with a capacity of 1,024 bits (for use in ID and game cards) along with a printed RFID tag that could be launched today in logistics operations. We doubt very seriously that mere consumers will soon have access to printers of this nature, but if we can now print memory and wireless identification tags, one must wonder: what on Earth is next?

Sony shows off its latest fuel cells and cola-powered batteries

In two days the world’s largest fuel cell exhibition, FC EXPO 2009, kicks off in Tokyo, and Sony will be there showing off the latest revision of its hybrid fuel cell technology. The system contains both a methanol fuel cell and a Li-on battery, enabling it to intelligently switch between power from the battery, fuel, or even both under high-draw circumstances. Sony will have two sizes on display: a portable model (above, with real leatherette lanyard) that could keep you talking on your celly for a week, and a heftier “interior” model that could do the same for a month. The company’s even attached a bottle of methanol to a wireless speaker, resulting in infinite placement possibilities and a groovy light show to boot. If that weren’t enough, the company will be demonstrating an updated, more efficient version of its sugar battery, which can be powered by plain ‘ol Coca-Cola — and you thought that stuff was only good for making your nephews run.

Giant e-paper display spotted, ogled at Taiwanese book show

Now showing at a Taiwanese book expo: two gorgeous e-paper displays, one in black-and-white and one in color. The approximately 24-inch readers were created by Delta Electronics (no relation to the airliner) and are being used by a local newspaper publisher to survey attendees and gauge interest in their future use. Our friends at Engadget Chinese tell us the color one is less contrasty than its monochrome partner, but beyond that, details are scarce and no one at the booth could provide any specs. One thing’s for certain: they’re a helluva lot crisper than those 28-inch e-paper billboards popping up around Tokyo. Hit up the read link for more pics.
