Transparent OLED rearview mirror both dazzles and distracts

Although we’ve been hearing about transparent OLEDs for years now, mum’s been the word on an actual product. So far the focus has been on Germany, but it looks like some interesting things have been going down in Korea as well. Researchers at ETRI (the flexible OLED folks) have apparently applied for 51 patents both nationally and internationally for the tech, including one for a transparent oxide resistor that helps increase the aperture ratio of AMOLEDs. And while all this is going down, NeoView KOLON has unveiled a new prototype rearview mirror that utilizes a transparent OLED display for — well, displaying things. Just be sure to keep your eyes on the road, eh?

Ito Electronics shows off waterproof OLED displays

Details are about as light as can be on this one, but it looks like Japan’s Ito Electronics has developed some sort of special “packaging technology” that can make OLED displays fully waterproof, which could be particularly used for watches, cellphones, or that fish tank home theater you’ve always dreamed of. Of course, there’s no word on any actual products just yet, nor is there any indication of possible transparent waterproof displays — or, at least, none that anyone has seen.

Elan Microelectronics demonstrates its eFinger multitouch tech running on Android

Would you look at this. Those folks at Elan Microelectronics might seem a bit slow on the lawsuit front, but they certainly look to have the tech to back up their claims of Apple multitouch patent infringement. They’re showing off what they call “eFinger Transparent Touchpad” technology, running on top of Android, and it’s looking pretty slick — we could really get used to this sort of smooth interactivity in Android, lawsuit or no. Check out the video after the break.

LG’s GD900 video tour (and shenanigans) at CTIA

We’ve been fairly intrigued about LG’s GD900 since we had a glimpse of it behind glass at Mobile World Congress this year. We were finally treated to a proper tour by LG’s Martin Valdez who not only did a bang up job of demonstrating the set but covered up what may be an early build firmware bug with such aplomb he deserves an award for his performance. Notable here is the clear keypad that acts as input device for typing, text recognition, gestures, and the full-on gorgeous UI. While we wouldn’t expect this to be a monster seller at the carriers, it will get LG some attention. So sit back, relax, and enjoy a few minutes with LG’s transparent beauty and a great showman, Martin Valdez.

Transparent “ViVid Screen” can be affixed to windows, cut into shapes

Screens that can be switched from a transparent to an opaque state aren’t exactly anything new, but LinkEarth Corp looks to be a taking a somewhat novel approach with its new so-called ViVid Screen, which it says is particularly well suited for digital signage. As with similar screens, this one employs some electrodes that become transparent when a current is applied, but it also makes use of a new “sponge-like” polymer acrylic structure that prevents the liquid crystals from leaking out even if the screen is bent or cut. That, the company says, will let folks cut the screens to any shape they like, and affix them directly to windows, letting businesses project an image onto them at night and simply switch ‘em to transparent during the day. At over $1,500 for a 40-inch model, however, the screens aren’t exactly the cheapest option out there, though the company will do custom screens up to 80 inches if you really want to go all out.

Philips’ transparent OLED lighting for post-modern identity masking, toilets

We’re still looking at another 3 to 5 years of development here, but transparent OLED lighting panels are definitely on the way. This 12-centimeter prototype panel developed by Philips Research is transparent until flipping the switch for illumination. Unfortunately, the panels are currently limited in size due to complexities in the manufacturing process that necessitate a clean-room environment. Ultimately though, larger panels will replace “dumb glass” in household windows and stall dividers in trendy Germany toilets. What, haven’t been to Berlin lately?

LG GD900 Features Transparent Keyboard

There isn’t a whole a lot of information available on this bad boy, but the LG GD900 has shown itself at MWC 2009. While we are not able to see many of the advanced features that LG is telling us it will have, we at the very least have seen the outer shell — which is already rather impressive.

This LG slider features the first-ever transparent keyboard, that has a soft glow when opened. Can’t wait to see this one up close!

We also see a forward-facing camera, which suggests video conferencing. The size of the screen itself as well as shortage of physical buttons also hint at touch capabilities, but we aren’t completely sure yet so don’t take our word for it.

The GD900 also will come in a very thin, 13.4″ thick casing, and have 7.2 Mbps HSDPA. What else will this phone have? Not sure, but we may have to wait until the second half ‘09 before we find out.

What do you think? Neat keyboard? What else will this phone need to feature in order to convince you to buy it?

Indestructible Glass Bathtub Is Indestructible

bathtub

By Evan Ackerman

It’s unclear who, exactly, this transparent bathtub is designed for… Someone who desperately needs both bullet-proofing and bomb-proofing in their bathroom, I guess. Maybe it’s that special tingle you get from being both exposed and protected at the same time. You’ll have to call China to get one of these, but at least the price is negotiable.
