Cheap Samsung Smooth U350 available from Verizon

Approved by the FCC back in January, Samsung Smooth U350 is now available for purchase via Verizon Wireless, shortly after the carrier has also launched the Samsung Trance.

With a 2-yr contract agreement, the U350 can be yours for only $29.99. The price goes up to $99.99 with a 1-yr agreement, and to $199.99 if you only want the handset, with no contract.

As Verizon puts it, Samsung Smooth U350 “appeals to tweens, teens and parents alike”. Truth is, the U350 is a basic clamshell that doesn’t have too many advanced features – although it does come with GPS and VZ Navigator.

  • Talk time: up to 300 minutes
  • Standby time: up to 336 hours
  • 3.78 x 1.87 x 0.76 inches
  • 3.35 ounces

All in all, this may not be a bad choice if all you want is a simple and affordable flip phone.

Leaked AT

Need more proof that Apple (and AT&T, by proxy) is taking the Pre kind of seriously? Enter this internal document from the iPhone carrier exposing the Palm phone for what it really is — a second-rate claptrap that is doomed to failure because of its inferior and stupid design. Among the highlights in this no-holds-barred slamfest — similar to this Verizon / G1 hit piece — is the comparison between WiFi (somehow the Pre has “limited WiFi access” because it can’t connect for free in Starbucks), and the nasty burn which points out that the Pre is available “in black only.” Ouch… Palm might want to stock up on aloe vera. In truth, though, the doc does point out some issues with the Pre that are very real, namely its lack of roaming capabilities outside of the US and an SDK which thus far won’t allow for CPU-intensive apps like 3D games. It’s significant that AT&T has deemed the phone worthy enough to address (internally at least), but it’s also significant to see just how far the company seems to be reaching on a handful of these points. Just remember guys — competition is a good thing.

Titan Blast Inflatable Water Rocket

Titan Blast Inflatable Water Rocket (Images courtesy Walmart)
By Andrew Liszewski

Water-pressure powered rockets just don’t have the same ‘oomph’ as their solid-fuel powered Estes counterparts, but the Titan Blast more than makes up for it by being 7 feet tall. Now in order to be light enough to make it off the launch pad the Titan’s body is mostly inflatable, but from a distance your neighbors won’t know the truth. So not only is it safe to operate in your backyard (if it’s big enough) but it’s apparently capable of reaching an altitude of about 100 feet before succumbing to gravity and returning to Earth.

The Titan Blast is available from Walmart for a somewhat pricey, $49.96, so here’s to hoping it doesn’t end up stuck in a tree.

DiamondNite Can Spot A Fake Rock

diamondtest

By Chris Scott Barr

Ladies, have you ever received a piece of jewelery that looked a little too good to be true? Sure, your boyfriend/fiancé/husband means well, but how can you be sure that it’s the real deal? My advice is to just believe he saved up the money for such a wonderful gift. But if you’re dead set on finding out the truth, here’s a little gadget that will help you out.

This little DiamondNite Diamond Moissanite Tester can spot a fake diamond in just 1.5 seconds. Ladies, this will make the perfect conversation at your next big party. Just slip it in your purse, and offer to test your friends’ rings, necklaces and earrings. Just make sure you’re wearing the real stuff, or risk the embarrassment when it gets turned on you. Of course the $200 price means that you’ll really only want to get this if you’re in the business of buying and selling rocks.

Samsung’s HMX-R10 HD camcorder aims for April release

Samsung’s devilishly cute HMX-R10 camcorder stole the hearts of many at CES, but ever since, we’ve been aimlessly wandering about Sammy’s website attempting to locate clues on pricing and availability. Thankfully, it seems some answers are starting to surface, and we’ve only got a month or so before we discover whether these whispers were laced in truth. Reportedly, this pocket-friendly high-def camcorder will be hitting UK streets next month, with early estimates pegging the price at $550. We’re told that Americans may have to wait until sometime this summer before they too can indulge, but at least the Britons will be able to test it out beforehand and give you a little heart-to-heart buying advice.

Core i7-packin’ Clevo D900F gaming laptop hands-off

We’re not sure if Clevo has had to deal with trade show thievery in the past, but its Core i7-equipped D900F was locked down tight at CeBIT. Nevertheless, we stopped by — camera in hand — to have a look, and what we saw was something we’d never, ever want on our laps for more than 120 seconds. We also saw a ridiculously potent LAN party rig, so we suppose there’s some truth to that “eye of the beholder” thing our parents keep mentioning. All the big pics are just below, but you already knew that, didn’t you?

NTT DoCoMo halts BlackBerry Bold sales after reports of overheating

It’s apparently not quite the same fire hazard that the truth in advertising standard-bearer Quickfire is, but NTT DoCoMo doesn’t seem to be taking any chances with its newly-launched BlackBerry Bold, with the Japanese carrier now suspending sales of the smartphone after some reports of it getting a bit too toasty for comfort. Apparently, some 30 users reported that the keyboard “heated up” while the phone was recharging, although it’s not clear if that’s due to the charger or the handset itself. For its part, RIM says that the issue “appears to be specifically limited to the BlackBerry Bold devices sold in Japan,” and that expects to be able to fix the problem and resume sales of the Bold “shortly.” In the meantime, stay frosty, Japan.

Dell’s Mini 10 launching on or around February 27th?

We’d be highly skeptical of this one (in fact, we actually are highly skeptical), but we’ve seen a Dell rep or two speak the truth before. To that end, we figured it prudent to pass along Sir Paul Synnott’s recent chat with an online Dell UK representative. Upon asking for more details on the future release of the Mini 10 netbook — you know, that machine that was unveiled at CES and then promptly forgotten? — he was amazingly hit back with a definitive ship date: February 27th. He was also told that the power adapter would be a “smaller one, as with the Mini 9,” and that pricing was yet to be determined. We know, it reeks of fish, but the date itself doesn’t sound all that outlandish. Guess we’ll just have to wait and see, eh?
