It seems like a bit of a rip-off — if you want a laptop that won’t shatter when its shiny little form slips out of your fingers as you run to your next meeting/target you have to pay a hefty premium to get something dull and durable. And, if that weren’t bad enough, you then have to live with something big, boxy, and ugly. Panasonic’s Toughbook line defines what many think of as a rugged laptop, but its bulk, heft, and cost give it niche appeal. It’s not the only option out there for a notebook that can take a beating, though, with the semi-rugged Durabook from GammaTech offering a package that’s a little more comfortable to use and, perhaps more importantly, a lot less expensive.

It was mid last year when Microsoft released the first “Power Pack 1″ for Windows Home Server, fixing that ugly data corruption bug and mixing in a few handy enhancements all the while. Since then the company’s been quiet about the OS, but finally will release another update today. No major bug fixes this time, but as expected Power Pack 2 will include enhancements to make remote access easier, enabling sharing directly to Media Center PCs or to Media Center Extenders, and adding support for streaming MP4 content to the Xbox 360 and some other devices. Microsoft also let slip news that Acer’s easyStore WHS tower will be shipping to the US next month, giving Americans with too much content another box with too many LEDs to fit their needs.

Adding even more credibility to the whole “beauty is in the eye of the beholder” mantra is this… masterpiece / abomination. Inspired by the iconic Aliens films, this completely over the top PlayStation 3 case mod is about as ridiculous as it gets. We’re not really told how the modder went about crafting this lovely interpretation, but we are given a few more snapshots to gawk at in the read link — which you won’t visit unless you too are an Aliens freak, but hey, that’s cool.

Right, we know — it’s probably the hideous FCC photograph that’s turning us off on the design, but there’s still something here that just screams 1997. Nitpicking aside, the so-called Bluepeaker is a multifaceted device that provides GPS data to Bluetooth-equipped phones, PDAs and laptops, all while doubling as a BT speaker (audio streaming is obviously supported) or a BT speakerphone (handsfree is a lock). The unit itself can get juice via any powered USB port or AC wall charger, and we’re told it should last for around 200 hours in standby mode. Sadly, the FCC isn’t really much for handing out pricing details, but we’ll be sure to keep an ear to the ground.

Toshiba’s Qosmio X305-Q725, which was unveiled amidst a flurry of other gizmos at CES, boasts the same incredibly controversial motif as the higher-end X305-Q708, but with an MSRP of $2,700 (versus $4,200 on the Q708), it’s at least a wee bit more affordable. The benchmarking crew over at HotHardware decided to put this newer, marginally more affordable iteration to the test in order to see if it still performed under pressure, and by and large, it did. While it couldn’t go toe-to-toe with higher-end desktops, the GeForce 9800M GTX GPU, quad-core processor and SSD helped it to blaze through everyday tasks and hold its own in the gaming arena. Our biggest issue is the omission of a 1,920 x 1,200 display, but we suppose that’s why there’s the more expensive alternative. Apricorn’s DVR Xpanders have never been the prettiest bunch, but we would’ve thought a redesign was in order with the introduction of the 1.5TB model. Sadly, our hopes and dreams of a DVR attachment from the outfit that isn’t completely heinous have been decidedly crushed, as the latest edition is just as unsightly as prior models. Of course, it can hold up to 187.5 hours of HD content or 843 hours of SD material, not to mention its ability to connect via USB 2.0 or eSATA. So yeah, if all that matters to you is functionality (and not missing a single drama while out on that month-long vacation), we’d say the $239 asking price is totally reasonable.
