After the BD-P1600 broke cover, it was just a matter of time until we got an in the wild look at Samsung’s BD-3600 Blu-ray player, seen here hanging out at a Best Buy as some commenters had indicated. That $399 price is enough to pick up the BD-Live storage, 7.1 analog outs and 802.11b/g/n WiFi dongle missing from the BD-P1600, while super slim wall mounting bliss remains the exclusive domain of the BD-P4600. Deciding between this and the DMP-BD80 without some real hands on time may be tough, but at least until Amazon has some HD on top of their VOD, Netflix streaming is probably enough to sway our decision.

We first got a peek at Panasonic’s DMP-BD60, DMP-BD80 and VHS-packing DMP-BD70V at CES, and now they’ve got official pricetags ahead of their April release. Beyond the VIERA Cast support for Amazon VOD, YouTube and other Internet content, this year’s decks also include improvements in power consumption, with the BD60 drawing 16% less juice than last year’s DMP-BD35. The DMP-BD60 can be had for a suggested $299, while the BD80 and BD70V are both priced at $399, depending on whether you prefer VHS or 7.1 analog outputs. Check out the CES 2009 hands on for a better look before these show up at a retailer near you.

We saw the rough’n'ready Archos 10 get reviewed mere days ago, and now the company’s back with the Atom-powered Archos 10s, a new 20mm thin netbook with 3.5G functionality, 1GB memory, Windows XP Home and up to 160GB storage. Additionally, the company has designs on a 17mm-thin, 9-inch tablet based on Intel’s Moorestown MID platform, to see the light of day sometime this year. This guy will include the Intel System Controller Hub chipset, up to 160GB storage, VOD and hi-def video playback, and digital TV reception. The Archos 10s should be available sometime in April, at a price to be announced.

Whoa, vaquero — calm your jets. This is just a projection, which may or may not prove to be indicative of reality. That said, there’s still quite a lot here to discuss, particularly since we’ve been hearing so much hubbub over the supposed explosion of digital distribution. Media Control GfK International has forecast that sales of Blu-ray Discs will increase some 150 percent to $2.9 billion, up from $1.1 billion in 2008. For those keeping count, digital distribution only generated $1.5 billion last year, and that’s including every penny made from VOD and broadband services. In-Stat analyst Michael Paxton was quoted as saying that the “bandwidth required to stream any type of HD video is way beyond what most households have,” and he continued by noting that the “convenience factor is still not there for streaming media.” You owe it to yourself to hit up the read link for the full report before blasting your opinion in comments below, but we suppose we can’t stop you either way.

Throwing some more features towards your local IPTV provider (U-verse this means you), Microsoft’s upgraded the Mediaroom platform with Restart Anytime, Live Anytime and Download Anytime network DVR features, making sure silly things like “when something comes on TV” or “whether or not you remembered to schedule the DVR recording” get in between you and your content. Restart shamelessly copies StartOver, restarting a show at any point in its progress, even if you just turned the box on, while Live lets you scroll backwards through the program guide and pull down previously aired TV from the provider’s VOD server. Finally Download Anytime pulls in shows or movies ahead of time satellite VOD-style so they can be watched later, despite potentially limited bandwidth. Beyond that, various interactive TV apps will be on demo in the booth this week including Visual Voicemail and TopGear.com but really, we’ve seen what we need to see.

Roku owners looking to go discless are one step closer, now that Amazon Video On Demand will be available on the box after a free software update in early 2009. Fulfilling the promise of more “big name” providers to come, flicks like The Dark Knight, Pineapple Express or any of Amazon’s 40,000 other titles can be purchased and played back to the TV for a 24 hour window. The bad news? Max bitrate is an h.264 compressed 1200Kbps. Not bad if SD only is your bag, but we’re even more eagerly awaiting another Amazon VOD HD rumor.
